How to start BLM

So you wanted to be a BLM but after 2 hours at that meeting you walked out of all you could perceptually understand was people wanting equal rights and protesting. You went back to the Guild to yell at the staff, (and their staves). You set the record straight and it's a Mage you wanted to become.

Everyone has told you BLM is complicated and slow compared to other Magic roles like SMN. While SMN is more fast paced I personally found myself liking BLM more. Unlike SMN, Black Mage is a 'turret' role which essentially means that you don't move, (or at least try not to move). This is reinforced with actions that increase spell speed over time but for the sake of brevity I only want to disclose ARR BLM for those just getting started. I find it overly pretentious to describe BLM in detail when you should discover your own method through trial and error at a striking dummy.

BLM may feel unappealing at first but post ARR it gets movement based despite what you'll get used to in ARR. Leylines and the ability to quickly prance to a party member's side etc. Proper utilization of these actions makes BLM very fun.

BLM is a recycling job. You'll be recycling your MP - completely draining it (or almost) only to bring it back up within seconds of depleting it all. Ice is replenishment, fire is usage. When you run out of MP simply switch to an Ice Spell that grants Ice and nods away Fire[post 35]. As said in retrospect: it's a slow job at first - you're a turret. This means the only moving you'll want to be doing is avoiding AOE. There is a way to avoid AOE while also casting to provide the maximum amount of dps so that when you move to avoid AOE you are inflicting dps on the target. I call it cast-sliding but it has another official name but I've since forgotten.

I, II, III, And More.

We'll go up to III.

One simply means a normal cast and two is an AOE attack which grants three. This is also true for the DOT, thunder.

Fire Starter, (a passive perk) will proc allowing you to cast Fire III without the use of MP after casting Fire II. Get used to using Fire to drain and Ice spells to regain MP over and over again. Don't get distracted by the MP bar, just focus on how many Fires you can cast before a full drain, (usually 6).

Manafont is an action that restores 3000 MP and should be used on every rotation when possible.

Dont disregard Addle: that 10% damage reduction is great for your Healer during boss party attacks.

You're Not Going To Like It At First

It gets better, stick with it!
