GOAD!! GOAD I SAY!!! WHERE'S MY GOAD! -enter party wipe here- - If you have been a Rog/Nin for longer than lvl 18 you have heard this a lot. There are a few reasons why we don't use it.

It gets called out by MRD/WAR's when surrounded by less than 4 mobs in a low level DF. Ninja is the newest addition to FFXIV:ARR (if you dont count 1.0 pug dual wield combined with Gladiator weapons and Thaumaturge spells). Most Ninja's were something else unless they JUST got the game during the update. We know that yelling for Goad is a cop out for the fact that the tank is biting off more than he/she can chew and using it would just be a waste. If you spammed Overpower until you ran out of TP and your not in a 50+ instance/raid OS moment go back to tanking school. Our ability to give you TP will not help you. It will be gone again in less than 3 minutes which is the Cooldown rate for it. Yelling it at every pull is impossible to deliver.

We didnt see the callout for it in the message box. DPS in general rarely look at that in a fight that would require us to use it. Too busy trying to kill the overabundance of mobs that were pulled and rescuing the healer.

-Solution as of 12/18/2014 with no TP Gauge Tanks, if you would please set a macro like this:

/p <se.#> <tp> enter clever Goad request here. that would make a HUGE difference.

Rog/Nin Goad macro should be this:

/micon Goad

/macroerror off

/ac "Goad" <mo>

/ac "Goad" <t>

this will allow you to hover your mouse over the tanks name in the party hud or on the tank him/herself and use it without having to switch targets unless you absolutely needed to phsyically target the tank for it. Allowing you to keep the pressure on the enemy target without losing dps.

DPS NEEDS POLISHING

YOU ONLY NEED TO REFRESH MUTILATESHADOWFANG

Another reason the party may have a dislike for their fellow Rog/Nin is dps. We have 2 DoT effects Mutilate and Shadowfang. We also have Dancing Edge to increase slashing damage on the enemy target and reduce target HP recovery, and Trick Attack (see Ninjutsu section on how to apply in combat) which increases the vulnerability of the enemey target. We hit really hard really fast. Sadly as a fellow Rog/Nin i rarely see others using the full capabilities of the class. Instead i see the spamming of our basic combo with a lightning bolt or fire aoe thrown in and an OCCASIONAL Mutilate. When Rog/Nin has had some time to adjust to the common knowledge of the game people will notice that the Pug/Monk is in fact dpsing circles around many of us because of it.

SolutionKeep in mind that Mutilate only needs to be refreshed every 30 seconds unless target is below 25% hp. If the target is that low, dont waste time applying DoTs or debuffs. it will be dead in the next few seconds anyway. burn it with basic combo/ninjutsu/assassinate

A good rotation for 50 NIN when fighting an enemy with a large HP poolMutilate =>Spinning Edge => Shadowfang =>Spinning Edge => Gust Slash => Dancing Edge => Spinning Edge => Gust Slash =>Aeolian Edge. Rinse and repeat. You may skip Dancing Edge and go straight to Aeolian if another NIN is using it. Dancing Edge debuff does not stack.

Rotation for taking out common enemy (trash mobs)Mutilate =>Spinning Edge => Shadowfang =>Spinning Edge =>Gust Slash=> Aeolian Edge (unless fighting vampiric enemies like bats then refer to Large HP Pool Rotation)

and every TWO rotations or until they expire. DO NOT REFRESH DoTs on LOW HP TARGETS

For Rog/Nin still leveling. DoTs are important at the start of a fight. Do what u can and remember your cooldowns. It makes a difference end game. And at any level if you find yourself running from bad ground juju do a few knife throws or a lightning bolt. Being away from the target is no excuse to not dps. Knife throw crits arent bad.

Ninjutsu (why Is That Rabbit A BLM?)

Ninjutsu is more than just fire, lightning, and some cute ground DoT AoE.Jin => Chi => Ten is your best friend. Huton's ability increases skill speed and maximizes dps. it also lasts 70 seconds. Ninjutsu recast is 20 seconds. You can recast the buff every 3 ninjutsu casts without losing the benefit.

When you reach lvl 54 and do the continuing NIN quests it will unlock Armor Crush.

Armor Crush when used in place of Aeolian Edge extends the duration of Huton by 30 seconds to a maximum of 70 seconds. This ability allows us to continually refresh our attack speed buff without having to recast the Ninjutsu which leaves Ninjutsu casting open for business more frequently. The downside is that Armor Crush has such a weak striking ability that it is no replacement for Aeolian Edge

After casting Huton i like to open up with Ten => Chi =>Jin. This will cast Suiton allowing for the use of Trick Attack which does very high damage and gives the target a vulnerability debuff when you hit them from behind. Trick Attack has a 60 second cooldown (10 seconds less that the Huton's effects) allowing for continuous use at each recast of Huton.

With some experimentation with the GCD of matras i found that in 0.5 seconds it can be casted one after the other. For example

/micon Huton

/ac "Jin"

/wait .5

/ac "Chi"

/wait .5

/ac "Ten"

/wait .5

/ac "Ninjutsu"

This macro will effectively cast Huton so long as you dont hit any skills when it is being cast. Personally i like to manually put in my matras instead of relying on a macro but for people who are having a hard time with it then this macro formula setup will prove very effective just the same with all ninjutsu.

Helpful Macros And Tips

If you made it to 60 as a NIN you may have noticed the large amount of skills at your disposal and no room to put them in. Macros will really help you out here even if you are keen on memorizing your Matras to clear up space on your hotbars. There are a couple of ways you can macro your skills to that you dont have to leave anything out.

Replacing Hotbar Skills Trick

I do this when I play Black mage and switch between Fire and Ice spells. I set it up so that when I hit Transpose it replaces my Fire Spells with my Ices Spells and vice versa. This can work in your favor as a NIN if you are accustom to your Matras being macroed.

STEP 1: Select an unshared hotbar (or make one in the character options menu by unchecking the share button in the hotbar menu) For the purposes of this explanation we are going to use Hotbar 5 and make it visible.

Step 2: With Hotbar 1 being your primary default hotbar add the following macro for easy access to hotbar 5. Give it whatever name and icon you want.

/hotbar 1 5

This macro tells your default hotbar to load all the abilities you threw into hotbar 5.

Step 3: Throw all your macroed Ninjutsu and skills with an addition macro in hotbar 5.

/hotbar 5 1

This switches your default hotbar skills back to their original position. You may do this with any hotbar of course and the effects will be the same. It replaces skills in the exact order you placed them in the additional hotbar. This is sort of how the cross hotbar works for gaming controllers on consoles except you do not have to cycle through several hotbars to get to your skills.

With everything set up you may hide hotbar 5 if you wish and it will not remove what you put into it. At the press of a button this trick allows you to switch between the 2 hotbars seemlessly and gives full access to additional skills you may have decided to live without because there was no room before.

Helpful Macros And Tips (continued..)

Something I do personally is avoid macroing Matras altogether. I put Ten, Chi, Jin on keys 1,2,3 and i remember them sort of like Hakuden spells in Bleach. Spell number 132 is Dotan, Spell number 321 is Huton, and so on..

I have also taken up the following macros to prevent losing any skills.

Combo starter macro:

/micon "Spinning Edge"

/macroerror off

/ac "Spinning Edge"

/ac "Internal Release"

Special Attack (turning Dream Within a Dream into a 6 hit attack)

/micon "Dream Within a Dream"

/macroerror off

/ac "Duality"

/ac "Dream Within a Dream"

Defense Buff

/micon "Featherfoot"

/macroerror off

/ac "Keen Flurry"

/ac "Featherfoot"

Restoring Macro

/micon "Second Wind"

/macroerror off

/ac "Second Wind"

/ac "Invigorate"

Killing Macro(because one of these is bound to be ready when a targets hp is low)

/micon "Assassinate"

/macroerror off

/ac "Assassinate"

/ac "Mug"

With the new additions to NIN skills there are some new responsibilites to the class as well. Such as aggro manipulation. It can be a pain in the ninja butt to target party members in the process of your rotation. There is a macro solution to this that will make your ninja life easier. If you got a healer class this macro trick works for healing spells as well. The neat thing about this trick is that you can hover your mouse over the party member without officially selecting the person. You can also hover the mouse over their name in the Party Hud AND in the chatbox. So when someone yells for GOAD DAMMIT! you can just hover your mouse over their name in the chatbox or in the party menu and hit the requested skill.

Goad

/micon "Goad"

/macroerror off

/ac "Goad" <mo>

/ac "Goad" <t>

For keeping the aggro off the healer in an OS situation or to troll the tank if he is being a ♥♥♥♥..

Smoke Screen

/micon "Smoke Screen"

/macroerror off

/ac "Smoke Screen" <mo>

/ac "Smoke Screen" <t>

Shadewalker

/micon "Shadewalker"

/macroerror off

/ac "Shadewalker" <mo>

/ac "Shadewalker" <t>

Closing Statement

Shukuchi DotonItem Level For Ninjas

A few things i would like to add to this guide as a closing statement as of 12/18/2014.

needs to be fixed. Using it to escape an AoE has a disappointing effect as the game will still read that you have not moved until you have successfully teleported to the destination... and you die.

A CHANGE WAS MADE TO SHUKUCHI added 2/1/2016 to guide

now places you in the area clicked on prior to animation completion.

needs to be beefed up a little if people continue to use it in pve. As it stands the damage is about equal to a WHM auto attack. Its hilariously underpowered and should only be used in pvp. Seriously it damages with a potency of 30 to everything in the circle and expires in 18 seconds. Fan of Knives does more damage than the entire length of that circle. The additional effect of is Slowing Down Your Enemies which im sure the group is thanking you for while the tank is up and the mobs aren't moving.

2/11/2016 added to guideUPDATE TO DOTON damage of this ability is now based on skill speed.

... not that big of a deal. Same could be said for most classes. a high iLVL does not make up for bad rotation. An ilvl 80 Nin can out dps a ilvl 100 Nin through proper rotation. Unless of course that 100 Nin knows what he/she is doing.

It would be really nice if Nin can cast matras in between skills. it would save the 1.5 -3 seconds wasted on casting ninjutsu handsigns by weaving them into rotations.

I hope this guide helps those dedicated to being great ninjas. I would be pleased to hear about anything i missed.
