Have you ever wanted to try multiplayer only to find an empty lobby? Worry no more! By joining the group, you know who is online and want to play, and you will never play alone again! We are an open steam group who invites all civvers. We have games daily, usually at afternoons or evenings in Eastern Time. Join the group and come to Group Chat to see who's there and introduce yourself!

Here is a quick list of stuff you need to know before you play your first game.

The league has its origins in the civplayers website. This website has been taken down, but we are still active!

Finding Players: Group Chat

It's not enough to just join the group! Join group chat if you want to play.

You can either choose to private message a player to challenge them or ask for games in chat

Add people you want to play with on your friends list so you can play often and join their game and invite easily. Feel free to add "Suede", or "Natmeris", and to pm them to ask for games.

Hosting Games And Inviting Players

The invite system works like any other steam game. If a player on your Friends List they can "Invite to Game", even if they are not the host. So message players in a game and ask them to invite you. And finally, even if the host has launched the room into Multiplayer Setup (seen as locked from lobby), you can still invite. You don't need to be invited using this method (lobby join works fine), it's just a matter of convenience, and keep in mind that most players don't leave their room open hoping people would join, nor do players stay in the lobby waiting for a game. No, we are all in the group chat and that is where most of the waiting is done.

The Lobby is not much use because the chat doesn't work and you don't know who is online. When there IS, a game open, it is either a non-league game, meaning a regular anc start game that few people have time or patience to finish, OR it's a league game.

Sometimes newcomers see a league game and join, hoping to play, but first you must join our group so that we know you are committed to playing multiplayer games (IE not quitting), and we'll have leave you out until then. Sorry! (But you're welcome to return once you read the rules!)

To avoid this some of our league hosts put password lock on the room, and this is another reason you should visit the group chat, because all you need to do is ask!

The best way to start playing is by joining the group, reading the guides, and asking if you can play and for some people to help you learn. But none of the guides are strictly necessary as long as you understand the rules.

Download Scenarios, Grid, And Other Stuff

You can play fine without doing anything extra, but if you want to civ like a pro in multiplayer, than you might be interested in getting the following for the full experience. Feel free to skip this part and come back to it later if you want to get right into the action.

Grid: Divides your minimap into a grid with ABCDE on the left and 1-9 on the top. In team games, you will be tellling each other your locations from star (i.e. a3, bc6, e78). Follow the instructions on the link, but note that the filepath has changed. On steam, it's something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\Art\interface

Scenarios: The most popular scenarios are Quick Civ, Future, UU, and MPT. You do not need the scenarios to play in a game, just to host one.

Quick Civ is anc start, fast production. The League usually plays QC 1.5:

Check out this beginner guide to QC for some info: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=793439351

Also, check out Nathiri's QC guide for more on QC gameplay!

UU allows anyone to have access to all UU's.

Future is my personal favorite, and it starts with all techs researched, and other adjustments. I like it because it often lasts only an hour of adrelinine packed action. Definitely check this out, another great guide from Suede

A dropbox with these two scenarios can be found here:

MPT is a 4v4 ancient game played on a tiny map with almost no water.

Here are the download links.

Paste in the scenario file in this folder to be able to use it in game. (Only the host needs to have the file)

Autosave: A key part of becoming good and a great asset to your team is learning. You should set your Max autosaves to something higher than the default, so that you can check saves after game and see what the opponent did each turn of the game so that you can model their builds and strategies. (More on this later). You can increase the autosave capacity by going to Conquests.ini file (called configuration settings in description) in the location provided by screenshot, and adding the line "Max Autosaves=100" at the end. (If it already has "Max Autosaves=" line, then just change the number at the end)

After you have done that, you can launch a multiplayer game with just yourself in it, load the game, set game mode to hotseat, and see what other players have at a certain turn.

Final Advice

I know, we've all been there. Civ3 on multiplayer? It sounds intimidating at first, because we are used to week long games that we finish at our own pace. But fear not, Civ3 on multiplayer is surprisingly well executed. Simultaneous moves and fast combat make the game flow much faster and intuitively, and games only last from 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on scenario or progression. (This is also why I love Future, since you get right into the action instead of worrying about starting from stone age!).

Many players are good, really good. But don't let that put you off. There are players of all skill levels and in teamers, we balance out the teams effectively, in which the top 2 players work out an agreement by having 1 player divide the room into 2 sides (minus the top 2), and the other player chooses their set of allies. There will be lots to learn at first, but you will pick things up as you play with us more often, and as a tight knit community, we are, in general, very understanding of newcomers and are interested in helping them grow. (We could always use more players in the multiplayer arena!)

Stay Civilized!
