Wartales swordsman build (incl. Gameplay) The Deadly Duellist

Purpose

Purpose of the build is to thin the enemy lines, consistently killing one or two enemies every single round (sometimes three or even four in the late game), while staying strong to survive encounters and participate in future rounds.

Convenience

Build is relatively easy to pull off. It doesn’t require legendary gear or any specific equipment that is hard to attain. The only caveat is that we need to unlock the Duelist specialization, which can be done early or a bit late in the game, depending on the mode you play: adaptive or region locked.

Core Idea

Core idea behind the build is to leverage swordsman skills that focus on attacks of opportunity to deliver multiple devastating blows every single round. We’ll be using engage/disengage tactic to push the build to its limits. Then disappear behind the frontline to wait for the next round, while our tanks soak up the damage.

Skills & Profession

Profession

We should go for blacksmith; not only is it the essential profession to gear up our party, but it also provides the maximum strength bonus out of all professions. Therefore, it is the right pick here.

Equipment

Armor and helmet

Any medium armor should do. Most of the time, I use crafted gear, which is surprisingly good in this game. This build is no exception; you can even grab whatever loot you get from killing enemies. Just make sure to keep the armor and helmet appropriate for your character’s level.

Helmet stamp

Many good options are out there, but I prefer “Stimulating Coating” for this build. Ideally, this character shouldn’t have any debuffs, so we get a flat out 20% damage increase.

Armor layers

I wanted to maximize the strength for this build, so I’m using “Hessura Brooch” three times. It will increase the strength at the cost of armor, but for this specific build and the way it plays out, we don’t really need much armor. Just enough to survive if something goes wrong.

Weapon

I prefer to have a two-handed sword as it increases strength really well, and it’s something we should aim for. No specific requirements there, I use a crafted two-handed sword, but anything you come across should be fine, just make sure they’re appropriate for your level.

Weapon oils

Alertness oil – It will increase damage from attacks of opportunity by 15%, which is very nice, and it’s something this build will be doing a lot.

Perforating oil – it will ignore 50% of guard, which is very very good, when going against targets with high armor and guard.

Belt accessory

We’ll be using Tin Lucky Charm, which reduces damage from attacks of opportunity by 50%. I was confused about it for some time because technically this, combined with the “Master Opportunist” skill, should give you zero damage when disengaging. But I was still getting some, probably it’s the way they calculate the damage behind the scenes. However, after taking “Bulwark” at level 12, which grants 70% damage reduction every time we engage. This makes this build overpowered; essentially, we get free attacks of opportunity without any consequences.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this is one of my favorite builds. It’s very reliable, easy to pull off, and very consistent in terms of results. Most importantly, it’s a ton of fun to play with.

If you'd like to get even more details about the skills and various aspects of the build, I've written an extensive post about it on my blog. Feel free to check that as well.
