Expedition Guide

Expedition Guide

Opening Comments

While playing this game, I realized I really, really wanted maps for the various expedition sites, so I wouldn't have to spend so much game time hopping about the maps, trying to find things.

But, having looked around, I couldn't find any such maps out there. As you can see, however, I wanted the maps enough to make them myself. Also, since I wanted these maps enough to make them myself, I thought there would be at least a few other people who would want to use them, too. Thus, this attempt to make a guide for it.

So, on to the

Disclaimers:First of all, I'm not a member of the dev team, I don't have access to game assets, and I don't own any part of this beyond all the time wast.. spent taking the necessary screenshots, splicing them together, and making this guide.

Second, while the screenshots were taken in 1920x1080, the result is ...not pretty. The lighting is constantly changing, the colors can change in some expeditions based on the season/month, and then there's the sandstorms and other weather effects. Thus, the splice lines can be painfully obvious.

Third, these maps were all made in version 1.2.4. There's been any number of hotfixes in that time, but the version number shown as the game loads didn't change. According to the interactive map, there were at least 5 more expedition sites in the game in the past, but have been replaced with just a treasure on the world map now. Some future version may well do the same to the remaining expedition sites with only one discovery... For example, we can only hope it eventually happens to Northeastern Baltic Sea.

Fourth, I tried to be fairly detailed, so there are most likely spoilers mixed in. If you are the sort of person bothered by this... well, I won't ask why you're even looking at a guide.

Expedition Help

Using this GuideFirst, the expectation is that the user will be able to see the maps, clicking on them to enlarge, and maybe zooming in and scrolling about to see in detail as needed.

Due to the zoom in need, the maps where I thought details would be difficult to see/find w/out zooming and scrolling, have been given frames that talk about "Community Artwork...", while the maps where I thought simply enlarging them was enough have no frames.

With this expectation, no guidance is given for locations of Resources, or Treasures, as there is only one of each on any map. If there is only a single Discovery or Event, the singleton will not be given guidance either.

The tool, Jacob's Cane, was used liberally to make as many purple exclamation marks appear as possible. I say "as possible", as Northeastern Baltic Sea, and Galapagos Islands never show purple exclamation marks anywhere, even if the Cane is used near an active hex.

I am using the word "purple" for purple exclamation marks, "white" for white exclamation marks, and (JC) to indicate locations where Jacob's Cane was used to make the event location become visible.

I kept track of which Port's shops sold which clues for Treasures... But, it turns out that even if you don't have the Treasure clue, as long as you stand in the correct hex, and Dig while carrying a Pickaxe in your Pack, you will successfully dig up the map's Treasure. So, I will not bother mentioning where those clues could be bought, as the maps all include indicators for the correct hex.

Characters with Expedition Related SpecialitiesEsmerelda - Caravan

"Increases Expedition Load" (by 60kg)

Invaluable - 60kg is like a free pack animal, but you also get her skills and stats.

Lu Liyuan - Mountain Traveler

"Reduces consumption when on Hills or Swamp terrain during Land Expeditions"

Very Useful - Every map has Hills and/or Swamps, often a lot of hills,

Andreas Heinrich - March

"Reduces consumption during Land Expeditions"

Very Useful - good on all terrain, makes your Provisions last longer.

Hiyar O'Worley - Desert Traveler

"Reduces consumption when on Gobi terrain during Land Expeditions"

Very Useful - Any map with visible sandstorms is one you should bring him on. Desert maps also have a few random events where having him allows auto-success.

Marma Cora - Wild Instincts

"Increases Field of View during Land Expeditions"

Useful - Makes it easier to find your way, and there are a few random events where having her allows auto-success with better rewards

Shen Shi - Scout

"Reduces Stamina loss during Land Expeditions"

Middling - Although a few events cause Stamina loss, most often it's caused by running out of Provisions... Not only is Andreas, therefore, a better choice as he makes your Provisions go farther, even if your team runs out of Stamina, it only costs whatever XP would have been gained from that expedition.

Kornelly - Wilderness Resident

"Reduces consumption when on Forest terrain during Land Expeditions"

Questionable - there's just not that much forest terrain, so I rarely brought him.

though there may be events with special rewards/benefits if you have him.

Generic Expedition AdviceBringing a full set of tools, Lantern, Grappling Hook, Fishing Hook, Pickaxe, Logging Axe, on every expedition is a good idea, given the range of random events. Although tools wear out with use and break, bringing more than one of any given tool on an expedition is probably not needed.

Some maps have little to no water or rivers, so Fishing Hooks aren't needed there. Jacob's Canes should be not needed since you should be able to use the maps included in this guide for everything a Jacob's Cane would help you with.

Whether you succeed or fail, Lucky Coins are single-use.

Camping Tools are only used for setting up in Camping Sites (look like a stone archway). Once set up, that Camping Site will never need a new Tool, and can be used as a new exit from the map.

Expedition team member stamina is equal to their HP, so for sailors with low Body, and thus low HP, you can give them armor or other equip with HP bonuses, if you're concerned about their low stamina.

Once you get them, the generic expedition team from a port's Post will typically be:

A pack animal, Andreas, Esmerelda, and your preference of Lu Liyuan, Marma, or Hiyar.

If at a landing site, the rentable pack animal is not available, so it would probably be replaced by Lu Liyuan.

Obviously, these generic teams get mixed up a bit, depending on what sort of discovery/event checks you expect to face on that expedition.

Each Expedition has a "Danger Level" of ★ to ★★★. There's no particular danger to expeditions, rather it is an indicator of map size: a ★ map is quite tiny, while the ★★★ map is huge.

Each Expedition has a "Completion Rate", but 50% comes from revealing map tiles, with the remaining 50% divided up between the number of Objectives. So, on a map with 2 Discoveries and a Treasure, digging up the treasure would be worth 16.67% completion rate. There doesn't seem to be any benefit to reaching 100% completion rate.

As 2 of the 4 MCs begin in East Asia, I'll also start my ordering from there.

Sakai ★★Discoveries:3★ The Phoenix Hall of Byodoin - Read "Tsurumonogatari" in Edo

The forum thread I found mentioning this event said the Ninja's Prosthesis had to be equipped to someone on the exploration team, but I found and collected the event without that.

The level and amount of in-game info on this makes this practically an easter egg.

there are multiple hexes that can give the discovery, depending on the month. None will ever show a purple, even if Jacob's Cane is used.

the check is for Biology 5

in November, SE from entrance, in the mountains, there is a hex with a couple of tents and some trees. This hex and the hex adjacent to the SE work.

in December, the hex 2 NW of the Treasure works.

the flavor text when getting the clue mentions it being a migratory bird, and the flavor text after the discovery mentions a half buried corpse.

there are 5 more hexes on the map with tents on them, those hexes may work in other months.

considering what a PitA it is to reveal/explore this map, plus this location and Riga being effective hole-in-the-walls, to the extent that after doing the map for this guide, and getting the entry for the Info Bank, I've never gone back.. NW corner of map - Body 32 or Technique 284★ Lake Guatavita - Read "Outrageous Waste" in Lisbon

SW from entrance - Negotiation 7

from there, South and a little East, easternmost water hex of lake - no check

Resource:Gold Mine [Gold] - Biology 5, Treasure 5

Events:Recruiting Beluget - after event while sailing where you see the sketch

technically optional... but the recruitment fails if you don't do this event.

purple in SW corner of map - "Enter"

white adjacent to South - "Walk in"

at least one, if not both event steps require Beluget to be present to proceed.

South America

Lima ★★★Discoveries:3★ Nazca Lines - Read "A Walk on the White Line" in Havana

South and somewhat East of entrance - Technique 383★ Silver Mountain of Potosi - Read "Cover Letter of the Mine Disaster Report" in Lisbon

SE corner of map - Negotiation 6

for whatever reason, the Info Bank lists this under Western North America, not South America

Resource:Rhodochrosite Mine [Rhodochrosite] - Treasure 7

Galapagos Islands ★★★https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2986953048

Discoveries:2★ Flamingo - clue in Tumbes [Contrib 300]

similar to Northeastern Baltic Sea, there are many potential working hexes, and even if you use Jacob's Cane, a purple will never show.

much better than Baltic Sea, all of those hexes work all the time. check is, of course, the same for every working hex.

although I didn't record all the spots, while revealing the map to take screenshots, I found almost every pond and lake had at least 1 working hex.

for example, from the entrance, 2 hexes North, and 2 hexes NW - Medical 5

Treasure:Isolated Island Treasure - Golden Face Pendant x1, 120k

Main Character Exclusives:Yun Mu - "Name is Corn" Quest

Negotiation 6, Biology 4 - How to Grow Corn x1

Western North America

Western North America ★★★Discoveries:3★ The Grand Canyon - No Clue Needed

purple in center of map - no check

there IS a clue for this: read "The Channel Light" in Havana... but it turns out you don't need it.

by chance, on my most recent game, I came by here to collect the treasure, without going by the Caribbean, let alone Havana, first, and found the purple sitting in plain view, so I collected it.

Treasure:Jones Expedition Treasure - Cat Head Relief Ring x1, 200k

Main Character Exclusives:Yun Mu - "People of Freedom" Quest, "Gold Mine in North America" clue

completing these events is how Yun Mu MC recruits Jaca

1st visit

white East of entrance, past two rivers - no check

white almost directly north of there, plus 1 hex East - Grappling Hook2nd visit, after meeting Jaca in Caribbean

white 2 hexes SE of previous location - Yun Mu, "Ignite"

Ending Comments

While I've toyed with the idea of trying to list all the random expedition events I've experienced, and what the choices' results are... Please don't expect too much. I probably won't ever get around to doing that, even if I think it would be fitting to put it in this guide.

v.1.0 of this guide:

* Currently the maps don't work. *Sigh* Probably because I set them all as Private until I got around to doing this guide. Hopefully this gets fixed shortly.

v.1.01:

* Figured out an issue, so at least the maps work now. The result is not quite what I was hoping for... but this is the first time I've ever attempted to do a steam guide. Of course it won't go as I had in mind.

v.1.02:

* Realized how to make the maps be frameless images like I had intended... but, it turns out, in that form, you can't zoom all the way in if need be. So, for the maps where I thought it would be difficult to see all the necessary details without zooming in, I've left them with the frames, and changed the others to the frameless version.

v.1.03:

* Added the Western Japan event which upgrades the Ninja's Prosthesis into having a usable ability, since I recently saw a forum thread explaining how.

v1.04:

* Noticed and fixed a typo in Northeastern Baltic Sea. The directions for November mistakenly said SW, when it should have been SE.

* Took the opportunity to add Map "Difficulty" (size) stars, and Discovery Rarity stars.

v1.05:

* I got the Edge of the World DLC, but am only about half-way through Fiona's quest, so adding the DLC discoveries is still very much a work-in-progress.
