How to make your train go FASTER!!!

How to make your train go FASTER!!!

A Little Disclaimer

The speeds that I measured are just rough estimates. The train on which I demonstrate what you're about to learn ran on a level track with little curves and without any cargo (excluding the tender). The speeds may vary, depending on what engine you're using, how many cars are you pulling and what type of cargo you're delivering.

With that out of the way, let's speed your trains up!

Our Engine

Demonstrating the speed-up will be Stampede Canyon Railroad's number 3, Ilias. This engine is a Glenbrook (or Baldwin 8-20 D for y'all hardcore railfans out there) Mogul, so it's not the fastest engine in the game. That title currently goes to D&RGW Class 47, a ten-wheeler. Since Glenbrook is used a lot though, mainly in the early game, I figured this will be the best demostrator.

The Thing

Crucial to our speed improvement is the reverser. You know, the lever thingy that makes your train go forwards or backwards. If you can't find your reverser when playing in the first person, entering the engine driving mode and seeing what lever moved when you move the reverser.Anyways, when starting, start as normal: reverser at 100%, throttle at 100% as well, brake at 0%.Glenbrook's maximum speed like this is about 18 mph (about 29 kmph). But here's the thing - you pull the reverser closer to 0.

Pull it slowly, start at about 50%

You'll soon see that the speed has in fact increased - now, Ilias is moving at around 20 mph (around 32 kmph). That's definitely some improvement!

Around 10% is the maximum effectivity. Single digits aren't that much of an improvement. You can now see that we're now gallopping at a whopping speed of around 24 mph! (around 38 kmph) This is definitely an improvement over the 18mph at the beginning!
