How to Edit the Text in NieR Replicant ver. 1.22... + a Text Restoration Mod + Extracting Files for General Modding!

What You Will Need

Copy of the game from Steam

msvc redist 2019 x64[aka.ms]

The Replicant Unpacker[github.com] . Specifically:

The emil.exe build[github.com]

https://github.com/yretenai/kaine/releases/download/0.0.2-hotfix1/emil.exeThe latest version of Notepad++[notepad-plus-plus.org]

Patience

80 Gigabytes of free space on the disk where Nier Replicant 1.22 is installed.

Extraction Directions

Click on and install "VC_redist.x64.exe"

Extract the contents of "msvc-amd64-bin.zip" to a folder of your choice

Copy and paste the hotfix "emil.exe" into the folder from the last step. Select that you want to replace the old version.

Go the the folder where you extracted "msvc-amd54-bin.zip" and hold shift + right click on empty space in the window. Select "Open Powershell window here"

Type ./emil.exe --install "the location of your Nier 1.22... folder" (be sure to include the quotation marks!

Here's an example:You can easily copy the file location by opening "Nier Replicant ver.1.22..." and right clicking the folder in the address bar and selecting "Copy address as text"Hit "Enter" (on your keyboard!)

Now we wait for the game files to be extracted! It will take a while. Because we did it this way, the game files are being extracted to the folder where they need to be extracted (in the steam library where Nier Replicant 1.22 is downloaded), which is:\steamapps\common\build_assets\rom\pcWhat happens here is that when you start the game and it can't access the original steam folder (we'll get to that) it instead defaults to the "build_assets" folder, and the game runs using the extracted files. These extracted files and this location are used for modding the game (including the papa Nier text mod and my text edits!). I did not cover this due to brevity and simplicity, but you can control the output of the extracted files using emil.exe with --output "location" after ./emil.exe --install "the location of your Nier 1.22... folder"But you don't need to do this here!

Once the extraction has finished. Go to your original "NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139" folder. and go to the "data" folder within it. Copy these two folders: "sound" and "movie". then paste them into \steamapps\common\build_assets\rom\pcGo back to your original "NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139" folder and rename "data" to "data backup" or whatever, so the game loads the "dev files" of "\build_assets\rom\pc" instead of the files from "data".

My Restoration Text And How And What To Edit!

(and to an extent, Papa Nier, RepliCAN, and YOUR own text edits!)

Just a disclaimer: I don't know 日本語 too good. My restoration is based on two different translations I found online of the censored text. I created new text that I felt matches the tone of the rest of the official localization, but still includes the offending content. It's not perfect for sure, and I implore you to create your own!

So, all the text in the game is stored in

"\steamapps\common\build_assets\rom\pc\snow\text"

Install Notepad++

In the "\build_assets\rom\pc\snow\text" folder, we are going to edit the "text_all" file.

Copy the "text_all" file and paste it to make a backup.

Open the original "text_all" file using Notepad++

In the Menu bar. Go to >encoding. Then >UTF-8. (This will make Japanese and alternative text (like the "é" in Kainé) be properly visible.)

This file controls this scene that I restored. The other files control other aspects of the text that I feel is self explanatory. (But I may explain what each one does if asked.)Now you can edit whatever text you want, in whatever language you want since all the languages are stored together for this remake.

For the Papa Nier mod, you just replace the files themselves. I didn't want to do that with this mod, but once again, I might upload one if asked. Instead, I'm going to ask you to replace the text yourself! I guess spoilers! Whoops! Maybe this is a flawed guide!

Then select everything from line 16661 to line 16652, then paste the replacement text. You shouldn't have new lines added to the file. Make sure you copy all the spaces that I have here.

What you highlight in the file should look like this!And it should become this! Save it (ctrl+s)Now you should have restored this section of the game! There may be other parts of the game that could be considered "sanitized" or "censored" or "poorly localized". But all that's outside the scope of this project, and that stuff wasn't keeping me from playing the game. Hopefully this will help more people play the game, or at least encourage people to mod the game, maybe restore it in their own language. Maybe the RepliCAN mod is something worth editing in? It's formatted the same way...

I hope this guide will be helpful. Once again, I feel my text edits are imperfect, but it's enough for me, and I hope it'll encourage people to start modding this game more.

I may upload my own file that you can just replace, That'd help with avoiding spoilers lol. But I have some concerns about doing that. Plus I want people to get in there and learn how to change text however they see fit!

I also expect you will have to go through the extraction process again if the game gets updated and you want the update... but at least you should be able to backup your edited files! Especially if you extract to a different location.

Sorry if this guide seems like I'm insulting your intelligence with how obvious some steps are. I just want it to be as clear cut as possible for everyone.

Also, play the game in Japanese, you dub-loving nerd!
