Modding of Warband #2 - Troops

Hello and welcome!

This is the second part of my modding guide for Mount & Blade: Warband. It is now a long time ago I released the first part, and I've just been really lazy the last couple of months - so I haven't bothered making a new one before now. I thought it was time to release the second part, so I'll do that now.

In this part I will teach you how to change troop trees - also known as upgrade paths. For those of you who don't quite get what that is; troop trees and upgrade paths are the levelling system of your troops. When you have a Recruit, and he's ready to level up, you can upgrade him to another troop. That's the troop system. Here I will teach you how to decide, yourself, what your troops will upgrade to.

Apart from that I will also teach you how to change your troops' inventories. Now you get to decide what items your troops will run around with. Choose what armor they will wear, choose what weapons they will wear, give them a horse! You can make an unstoppable army just by giving them the best items in the game, using this method!

Another thing I will teach you is editing the troops' skills. Just like you can choose your skills when you level up your own character in-game, you can do this with the troops in the game! Make your archers the best archers in the game by setting their Horse Archery skill and Power Draw skill to a high value!

The last thing I will teach you will be editing the dialogues of the game! Make it all western by changing it to a western accent, or make it even more medieval!

Please do notice that not all of these things are not possible without the modding tool, and some is not possible with the modding tool. You will have to use them both here.

This is what you can expect of the guide! Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll start the guide!

Upgrade Paths (Troop Trees)

Let's start out with the upgrade paths (troop trees). We will be doing this one with the modding tools, as I have not bothered figuring out how to do it manually, using the text files...

Start up your Morgh's Mount and Blade Editor, and open the Troop Editor. Now find a faction you want to edit. Let's do what we did last guide - choose the Swadians (Lollipop Land, as we called them).

Let's start out with the swadian_recruit. Click on the swadian_recruit and have a look at the Upgrade Path. The Upgrade Path is located on the right side of where you can change the name of your troop.

At default it will be set to upgrade to the trp_swadian_militia. This means that when the troop levels up, you get the option to change it to the Swadian Militia. As you might have noticed, there are two boxes. The one below says '0. no upgrade'. It is set to no upgrade because Taleworlds wanted the troop to only be able to upgrade to the Swadian Militia.

Click on arrow pointing down on the right side of the '36. trp_swadian_militia' and find the Swadian troops. Now you can choose which troop you want the Swadian Recruit to be able to level up to when he can level up. You can also add an extra one by changing the '0 no upgrade' to a troop you want it to be able to level it up to.

Have some time to mess around with this, and make the troop tree you want. When you're done make sure you save it, and then hop into the game, recruit some recruits and level them up! Now they're using the new troop tree you gave them.

Troop Inventories

Now let's get to the troop inventories. Here I will teach you how to choose which items you want your troops to have.

Open up the Swadian Recruit again, and go to far right menu (the one right next to the Upgrade Path we used earlier). This is the Items menu. In this menu you can see what items the troop currently has. Now look at the menu right below. This menu says 'Available Items'. These are all the other items which the troop can use, but currently doesn't use.

Now find an item you want the Swadian Recruit to have. Let's take the Morningstar. Find the item with the ID itm_morningstar. The number ID is 379. When you have found it, click on it and then press the 'Add selected item to inventory' button below. Now the inventory of your Swadian Recruit has 15 items. In the Items menu above, you can see that the Morningstar has been added. Since there's more than one weapon in the Items menu, not all the Swadian Recruits will use the exact same weapons. Now some of them will run around with Hatchets, some with Pickaxes, some with Clubs, some with Scythes and so on. Since we added the Morningstar, some of them will run around with a Morningstar now.

Let's remove all the other weapons from the Swadian Recruits, so that they will all run around with a Morningstar. Select the Scythe item in the Items menu and click the 'Delete Item from inventory' button below. The Scythe should now be removed from the Items menu. Do that wih the Hatchet, Pickaxe, Club and Stones as well. The Swadian Recruits will now run around with Morningstars and a Shield.

Now you can mess around with this, and give the Swadian Recruits all the best items in the game. When you're done make sure to save it.

Troop Skills

Let's hop on over to the third part of this guide. Let's have a look at the troop skills.

Let's continue making the Swadian Recruit the most powerful unit in the game. Choose the Swadian Recruit and have a look at the Skills menu. It is located in the middle, below the Proficiencies and above the Flags. The Swadian Recruit currently has 1 in Riding, 2 in Inventory Management, 1 in Prisoner Management, 1 in Leadership and 2 in Trade.

Let's give the Swadian Recruit a powerful hit with his Morningstar by giving adding 10 points to Ironflesh. Click on the '0' in the Ironflesh skill and change it to 10. Now the Swadian Recruit has a very powerful hit.

Now let's add 10 to the Power Strike below to make it even more powerful. And while we're at it, let's add 10 to Weapon as well. Bah, let's have some more fun and add 10 to Shield, and another 10 to Athletics. Heck, why not another 10 to Riding, too.

Now the Swadian Recruit is preeeeeettty powerful. His Shield has some good defense, his strikes with the Morningstar are pretty powerful, he runs fast with the 10 in Athletics, and he can use whatever horse in the game with his 10 Riding. The 10 in Riding might seem like a waste now, as the troop doesn't have a horse, but just hop back to the Troop Inventories add a Horse to the troop's inventory.

Remember to save, once again!

Dialogues

Now for the fourth and last part of this guide. The dialogues. We can't do this with the modding tool, so we'll have to do it without it. Open up your Warband Module folder and find the menus.txt file. Open up the text file and have a look at the third line of text. Now we're back to this old stuff with weird lines of numbers and letters we don't need. So messy, right?

Spot the "Welcome, adventurer, to Mount and Blade: Warband." sentence in the third line of text. You can change this to whatever you'd like. I have done this in my mods. I have changed the 'Mount and Blade: Warband' to the name of my mod. To do this, simply highlight the 'Mount_and_Blade:_Warband.' and change it to the name of your mod. Remember to use the underscores between the words, as spaces don't work in this.

Now you can go through this whole text file and change the text to what you want to change it to. But remember! Do not edit or delete the randomly-placed numbers and letters! Those are the ID's, they're useful. Therefor we won't change them.

This text file is the first text in the game. When you start a new save and you get the welcome text and get to choose what profession your father was and all those things - you will see what you changed it to in this file.

Remember to save the file!

You can also open up the conversation.txt file and do the same thing as we did here. This file won't change the first text in the game - instead it will change all the other text in the game. Everything the NPCs in the game says, is located in this text file. Here you can change everything the NPCs says in the game.

Now you can mess around with the conversations and dialogues of the game. But remember to save them both before closing them down!
