Migrating M&B Mod Files from Steam Workshop

Migrating M&B Mod Files from Steam Workshop

Introduction

Why should you care? Well, in most cases there's no reason to mess with your workshop mods. However, if you intend to poke around in the mod files and make little tweaks (such as adding custom battle scenes, custom music, custom banners etc.), it behooves you to divorce the mod files from the Workshop feature so that they don't automatically update and wipe out your changes.

This guide assumes you've subscribed to the mod(s) in question and have allowed it/them to download and update prior to following the steps in this guide. If for whatever reason, you ruin your mod installation during this process, don't worry; Your save files are completely separate from the mod files and deleting and re-installing the mod should fix any problems you may have caused without any loss of progress - assuming of course your save files are from the most up-to-date version of the mod itself.

Start by locating the mod files in your Workshop directory. On a Windows operating system, that is going to look something like this:

C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\48700

Each of the folders in the above screenshot represents a game you have installed at some point that supports Steam Workshop. Yes, the folder that contains your Mount & Blade: Warband mods is literally named <some arbitrary number>. The reason I indicate a blank, is that I've been led to believe this number may be different for each user. In any case, poke around the various folders in here until you've confirmed the one you're looking is for Mount & Blade: Warband. You'll know you've found it when you've gone into one of the folders inside that folder and found something that looks like this:

If you happen to have subscribed to a plethora of mods and you're not sure which one is the mod you're looking for, you can always try asking the mod author what the ID is for their mod on Workshop in the mod's comment section.

The next step is very simple. Copy and paste the mod's folder into this directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MountBlade Warband\Modules

Now I recommend renaming the mod's folder to indicate the mod that you downloaded - as opposed the arbitrary numerical ID. At any rate, unless you intend to unsubscribe from the Workshop version, you're probably going to want to name it differently than the actual Workshop version or you're going to pick the wrong one to play when you launch Mount & Blade.

As the final step, don't forget to also copy any saved games from the workshop version's folder. You'll find that in a directory that looks like this:

C:\Users\<User Name>\Documents\Mount&Blade Warband Savegames\<Workshop Mod Name>

Do note that you won't have anywhere to move your saved games to until you launch Mount & Blade again - being sure to select the newly migrated mod and not the workshop version in the launcher's drop-down menu. Start a new game and make a new save. Now you should have a save games folder for the newly migrated mod. Go ahead and Ctrl-C the save games from the old version's folder and plop them down in the newly-minted save games folder. The next time you launch using the migrated mod, you should see all of your old saves and be able to load up and continue the fight!

Conclusion

Now you are free to tweak the mod's files to your heart's content. Keep an eye out for more guides by ZombieMoses and when we see each other on the field of battle, I hope fervently it is side-by-side that we storm the walls of Ichamur.
