Become A Effective Fulcrum Pilot | MiG-29 Guide [ENGLISH]

Introduction

Flying the MiG-29 can be a difficult process, requiring you to rely heavily on your RWR, Situational Awareness, and BRAA calls. After your time, you're at a severe disadvantage in comparison to other jets. Assuming you have already learned the basics of the plane.

This guide is here and will assist you in becoming a threat on the field.

Features

As a small and mini version of the Su-27, you are very maneuverable, and you have a good thrust-to-weight ratio, meaning if you are likely to merge with an enemy jet, you can be somewhat of a threat.

Instruments

You are equipped with an infrared Thermal camera on the very front of the MiG that is very useful when you want to fly stealth like, meaning you can lock on a jet via infrared and they will not get any warnings that there being locked or targeted.

Turn On: [Default: O]

Controls:

[Target Designator Up] ;

[Target Designator Down] .

[Target Designator Left] .

[Target Designator Right] /

When you are in EO mode, you cannot tell friend from foe you will have too turn on your radar.

Radar On: [Default: I]

Bottom left of your hud, The letter A will be shown if that changes to something else, that is friendly; if it stays or continues the same, that is hostile.

It's been said multiple times that the MiG-29 Radar is very weak and not strong, but it is very useful for pinpointing where your target is. Flying in EO Mode is a good strategy, but it's really risky.

The S variant of the MiG-29 is equipped with an ECM (electronic countermeasure) built-in system used for tricking and jamming radars and useful for SAM avoidance. Can hold the R-77 and other advanced weapons.

The A variant of the MiG-29 is not equipped with an ECM (electronic countermeasure) system. Does not hold R-77 and other advanced missles.

Trim

As a Soviet Cold War-era jet, you have not researched an auto-trim instrument to control your plane for you, so you will have to manually trim your jet: right, left, up, and down. It's very important you manage your trim; failing to do so can cause you to lose control too easily. or having to hold your trim with your stick or with whatever you're flying when you most need it.

Fuel Management

MiG-29 does not have a lot of fuel to burn off; you must conserve 80–70 percent of your fuel. Even when going on long missions, it is very important to not use a lot of fuel because you may be in a situation where you need to evade, intercept, or run.

Always take a fuel tank with you on whatever load-out you have or plan on taking.

Loadout

This guide is based on CAP and air-to-air engagements. The perfect loadout for the MiG-29S is all radar guided. This is my personal loadout; obviously, you can choose your own. I have more success with all radar guided.

Payload 1 - R-77

Payload 2 - R-77

Payload 3 - R-27ER

Middle Load - Fuel Tank

Payload 4 - R-27ER

Payload 5 - R-77

Payload 6 - R-77

R-77 - has its own radar and will need guidance for a couple seconds its like a Fox 1 to Fox 3 but can be considered to be a Fox 3.

Wait till you no longer see the propulsion from the missile, then pull away.I assume that's when it's gone pitbull, and I believe it's very accurate for a pit-bull timer.

R-27ER - Is a full on Fox 1 you will need to guide the missile all the way to impact

Engagement

According to the Air Goons Wiki, it has information on the ranges of, I believe, every missile in DCS.[www.airgoons.com]

R-77: Range 54nm

R-27ER: Range 35nm

The great thing about using radar missiles is that they can be used to scare people. Your 27ER can be used as bait to scare your target if they are burning hot on you. Your R-77 missiles are the main threat and are effective if used correctly.

Lofting your missles is not recommended; always lead, then fire.

Countermeasure

Your best friend is and will be the mountains and hills, and anything you can hide behind terrain masking is the best tactic when flying the MiG, as you are at a disadvantage. Coverage can help with your disadvantage.

Fly low, but not to the point where the bottom of your plane is skimming trees and the ground.

Use your AWACS or GCI to get constant BRAA calls and Bullseye.

Author Notes & Conclusion

Alright lads, you have reached the end of this guide. The battle field awaits you. Take your knowledge and be the best Fulcrum Pilot you can be. Practice and Test.
