How to fix "Mod Mismatch" error

What Does The Error Even Mean?

We've all been there. In update 1.9 for the game, ivy introduced some new optimizations which do make the game crash less, but also seem to both cause more lag and also cause this error to appear when challenging people for some reason. This can happen even if you share the same mods as your opponent.

The intended reason the error appears is if both players don't have the same serverside mods. If you're playing in public lobbies, you shouldn't have any serverside mods. You may have subscribed to a serverside mod by mistake, so I'll list a few so you can make sure you don't have them:

But I Don't Have Any Serverside Mods!

Yeah, this is where the update broke the system. For some reason, having ANY mod can randomly cause this error to happen, and there really isn't any pattern to what mods cause it. The solution, however, is quite simple (usually):

From the title screen, open singleplayer. Let the modded character select load in. Then just click quit and go back to the title screen. Now, if you go into multiplayer, you shouldn't get the issue. Why does this work? No idea.

If the issue persists, make sure your opponent is also doing this. I really haven't found any rhyme or reason as to what specifically causes the issue, but this has fixed it for me (at least up until recently, which tells me another popular mod causing the issue is running rampant in public lobbies).

While I'm Here,

A similar issue exists that is the cause of replays crashing when you click on one. The solution I've found is to just idle on the title screen for ~10 seconds until you get a little lag spike. This indicates that all of your mods have loaded. At this same time, the Character Codex menu (mod by Trimay) will populate with all of the modded characters you have installed, which can be a similar indicator.

After removing these mods, also do a reinstall to make sure any remaining data for them is purged.
