If the hive is brown it will contain buzz wax.
How To Know If The Hives Contents Will Be Wild Honey
If a hive looks black and yellow it will contain wild honey.
Where Can You Find Them?
You can only find and hives and therefore wild honey/buzz wax on the Starlight Strand island. Buzz wax can be found pretty much anywhere on the island while wild honey can only be found roughly in the middle of the map (as far as I know) in an an area only reachable with a jetback.(shown in picture below)
