Intro To This Guide

<that's Oryx the mad god, read this guide to learn how you can get better at fighting him and his minions<

Well then, enough with silly pictures.

I've written a RotMG guide before, it kinda sucked. I didn't put much work into it.

Sooo....

I decided to make another, better one. I'm putting more time into it. Images and jokes :)

So yeah. This'll be a better guide. I can't garuntee it'll make you pro, but it's a jumpstarter for research, some ideas, and some random help that'll improve your gameplay. If it doesn't, go into the comments and flame me.

Keep reading to start your adventure.

Intro To RotMG

Well then, here's section two for all you fun people who kept on reading.

Realm of the mad god is a really interesting game. It combines arcade style gameplay, where you blast along a pixelated character; MMO RPG, with dungeons, leveling, and trading; and a touch of it's own, with just mindless blasting through enemies, no story other than following your quest markers.

The first step to getting pro in this awesome world is:

Leveling

A comprehensive guide to almost everything RotMG image 15
A comprehensive guide to almost everything RotMG image 16

Leveling is the beggining of becoming better at realm. Higher levels deal more damage, move faster, and can sustain more damage before death. One of the best goals for a new player is to reach the max level: 20.

Remember, if you're a high level, it doesn't mean you're invincible. Just because you have good stats doesn't mean you should forget to dodge or go into a new area you don't know how to handle.

To start leveling, simply log in, (run the tutorial if you haven't already), and head out onto the beach with your level 1 wizard. A small image of a scorpion should pop up on the edge of your screen, with an arrow pointing towards a direction. This is your quest marker; the easiest way to level up. Follow the arrow until it leads you to your first quest boss:

THE SCORPON QUEEN.

This enemy has low HP and low attack. The minions die in one hit and it should be fairly easy to beat. Try to dodge the attacks, as getting into the habit of avoiding projectiles will help you when you're fighting stronger enemies in the forest.

NOTE: I'm only doing the special guide for individual enemies for important enemies because I really don't want to write out a ton of stuff.

After fighting several scorpion queens, you should level up and get a new quest. Depending on where you are, you could be asked to fight a bandit leader, sandsman king or hobbit mage. try to figure out what the different patterns for their attacks are and how to avoid them.

After grinding the lowlands (where these easy creatures lurk) to level 6-7, you'll be directed inland, away from the safe confines of the beach, to the midlands. Here stronger enemies lurk, and you'll need to learn how to dodge and avoid swarms of minions or perish under their heavy attack power. The enemies here give a lot more XP for the kills you get than you would from the lowlands, and the loot is better.

After grinding there a while (level 15-17) you'll be directed to the highlands: a dangerous place for inexperienced players. Very slowly work your way up to that area, as the enemies can quickly kill even a level 20. Here, you'll want to avoid the quest bosses as they are often nearby powerful gods (some of the highest level enemies found in the realm). Work yourself up to level 20. Congratulations: You are now the highest level possible.

Next step:

Loot

A comprehensive guide to almost everything RotMG image 28

As you level your wizard, you'll be sure to have noticed brown bags such as the one shown in the image to the side. Walking over to them, they contain items that can be equipped to your character. Here are some tips for loot:

A red background for an item means your class can't equip it, a grey background means you can

Mousing over an item gives you it's description and stats, if the letters are green it means the stats are better, if red, they're worse.

There are 12 tiers of weapons and 13 tiers of armor.

Harder enemies drop better gear. Moving inland will get you better gear.

If the items are in a purple, cyan or white bag, it means their soulbound. No one else can see what's inside them or take items from them.

You have to do a certain amount of damage to an enemy to get souldbound bags dropping from it. The damage you have to do is called souldbound damage, or SB

The best loot in the game comes from dungeon bosses, not quest monsters (most of the time). Head into dungeons for more consistent good drops.

If I've missed anything on loot, drop me a comment.

Dungeons

Dungeons are some of the most interesting and difficult parts of realm. Fighting through rooms flooded with enemies to a boss challenge many times more difficult than your average quest boss holds a charm like no other. In addition, these also drop powerful UT equipment and high tier loot.

This will probably be the longest section yet; so bear with me.

I'll start with the lowlands dungeons:

THE NOBLE PIRATE CAVE

"Omg pirate rum drop." -Zap brannigon, co-author and guildie.

Pirate caves are the easiest dungeon in game. The pirates shoot low damge shots and have low health, although some of them do shoot cannon balls which are best to avoie as too many of them can kill you. The layout is really simple; some walls, a little water (which will slow you down), a few dead ends, and lastly a big round boss room. The boss, Dreadstrump the Pirate King, is easy to beat, he shoots cannon balls like some of the other pirates, but other then that there's nothing to him, just shoot and don't get hit.

• There is a rare chance you will get Pirate Rum to drop, but other then that there's nothing all that intresting that drops.

• Dreadstump is teh easiest boss in-game

THE TROLLISH FOREST MAZE

"Get outta there you noob"-Rookmage to a confused DrVoldi.

This dungeon is confusing and painstaking, the loots bad, and you don't get much xp.

In other words, it's a waste of time. The only thing worth anything is the speed sprouts, which drop intermittendly throughout the dungeon, and apply speedy to you for 5 seconds.

THE CHALLENGING SPIDER DEN

"Ok, rush,"-Last words of kittiness the wizard, killed by way too many spiders.

This dungeon is the most difficult of the low-landish dungeons. It features firepower enough to kill a level 20, and an absurd number of enemies. The den's layout is straightfoward-no dead ends or forks in the path. Eggs lay all over the floors, hatching if you get too close or shoot them. You might want to avoid hatching as many eggs as possible, if you do so, the time you save is noticable. The boss shoots out several turrets that form a web of slowing projectiles, and runs away from players while shooting at them. The best strategy for getting hits in is to chase arachna into a corner, and while she runs back, do some damage. She'll drop your first UT's: The poison fang dagger, and the spider eye ring. Drops of note include ichors, which heal 50 more HP then HP pots, making them good if you want to go to a high damage area.

THE MYSTERIOUS FORBIDDEN JUNGLE"And then, they got angry, and all of a sudden I was gandalf and there where pretty colors everywhere."-DrVoldi, hallucinating.

The forbidden jungle is a difficult dungeon to figure out. It has the most complex fire patterns of all the lowlands dungeons. With dancing tribesmen that will apply various status effects to you and high hitting enemies, you've entered your first mid-game dungeon. The boss is difficult and the enemies confusing. The most confusing of the enemies is the fire with the dancing enemies. Work on destroying the fire and breaking the healing circle of the tribesmen. Once you're done, you should be able to defeath the enemies without any help. During the second phase of the boss battle, the totems in the four corners of the room will shoot a ton of shots. Sit in the center or middle sides to avoid them, though this does make dodging hard.

THE DARK AND SCARY SNAKE PIT

"I'll buy that speed po-adsonasobasd" ROOKMAGE was killed at level 20 by greater pit viper.

The snake pit is definitly in the realm of mid-game dungeons. Breakable walls lead to clumped enemies in passages and though the shots don't do a huge amount of damage, they can kill you if there are enough enemies. Sword and archer characters are possibly the best classes for this, because of the high defense of sword characters and the piercing shots of archers. Circle the snakes to avoid all their shots and kill them. The boss has multiple phases she cycles through: first shooting 8 ~100 damage shots towards the corners of the room, then spawning multiple small enemies (back out unless you are archer, hard to hit her during this phase and a good time to regen), then spraying the area with blinding shots and 100 damage grenades. possibly the best strategy for newcomers to the snake pit is to duck in and out of the boss room.

That's it for the beggining-midgame dungeons!

Classes

A comprehensive guide to almost everything RotMG image 65

After you've learned how to do some dungeons and level up a character, then died, you'll want to try out a new class. The beggining strip of classes you don't need to be level 20 to unlock are:

Wizard: The wizard is an easy to kill, high damage class that can unleash massive destruction on your enemy with a powerful explosive spell. His lack of healing ability and the fact that you probably don't have a pet, combined with his low, robe class defense probably means you'll die faster with him than any other begginer class.

Priest: A good begginers class once you learn how to properly use the ability. This class has low damage and a healing ability that allows him to survive after taking much damage. Work on looking at your HP and MP bars very often to make sure you can heal and know when to do it.

Archer: The archer an interesting class for new players. The ability seems useless in the lowlands, and indeed it is. It helps a lot in dungeons, but not a ton anywhere else. The piercing shots of the archer, however, help in clearing large swarms of enemies.

Rouge: The rouge might be the favorite class of new realm players. With low damage and medium range, coupled with the ability to go invisible, makes the rouge ideal for quickly getting out of trouble and learning how to do new areas with minimum risk.

Warrior: One of the highest damage classes in the game, the warrior's ability gives him extra speed and more damage when used. Use this to quickly kill bosses and rush through crowds of enemies. The only drawback for the warrior is his small range, which makes getting near bosses slightly dangerous. Luckily, the heavy armor he uses compensates by providing more defense so you take less damage.

UT's

A comprehensive guide to almost everything RotMG image 73

Moar whitebags <3

UT's are beyond the linear tier system: they each have special advantages and drawbacks. Take the UT set from the forbidden jungle: The robe provides no defense so you can easily be killed, however, it provides massive MP and Wisdom bonuses so that you can use your special more often. The staff does a medium amount of damage but also gives extra range, making the class more safe to play.

UT items cannout be traded, meaning that if you want them, you have to go and grind the dungeons yourself! Most UT's will drop in a cyan bag, however, some drop in purple bags, and the most powerful drop in a white bag.

Pets

A comprehensive guide to almost everything RotMG image 78

Pets are a very important part to improving yourself as a player. Work on making friends with high level players who will commonly get pet eggs and can give them to you.

STEP ONE: Hatching. Hatch an egg in your pet yard, located in the nexus. Look at your new pet! Check out it's abilities! Does it have heal? if so, great! If not, you might want to try to get a new pet. A healing pet will allow you to survive much longer, and turn easy to kill classes like wizard into long living machines of destruction.

STEP TWO: Feed your pet items to make it better! UT items are the best, and if you don't want to use them and can't trade them, they make great pet food.

STEP THREE: Have two pets of the same family maxed? Great, fuse them! The pet will have a new ability and a higher level cap, allowing for more healing, attacking and distracting!

Death

A comprehensive guide to almost everything RotMG image 84

Death is a part of the game: instead of being angry about it, learn how to avoid it by utilizing past experiences.Die? think about how and why it happened. Don't let it happen again.

Mad at the game? take a break. Work on something else in game. Try some new content, or help some friends.

You'll also get fame from death: use this to enter the arena, feed pets or found a guild where you can easily play with friends.

Have fun :)

Outro

Make sure you play realm the way you want to play it.

Like friends? play with friends!

Don't? Go to an empty server and ignore everyone.

Getting bored? Play a new class or find some new dungeon to try out.

Too excited? Well good.

Update: 8/11/2021

Well, it's been 8 years since I published this guide, and it's still going strong. Realm of the Mad God is still my most-ever played game, with steam logging me in at over 800 hours! In the meantime, I've actually started developing my own game, which takes a lot of inspiration from Terraria (my second most-played!) and Realm of the Mad God's bullet-hell combat. I don't play realm much anymore, but I will always hold it dear to my heart as one of the first games that really got me interested in game development itself. If you're interested, check out Minicology and give it a wishlist! Thanks y'all for all the guide comments, ratings, and favorites. Means a lot to me.
