Introduction - What Is Burn?

By Limbus Company's definition, Burn simply damages the opponent by the potency of the burn on turn end, as well as reducing the count of Burn by 1. Simple, right?

This is the simplest way to describe burn in limbus, but of course since this game is made by Project Moon burn has many other variables that need to be explained first. Unlike other games where burn is determined by a counter or a flat number, burn in limbus has two factors you need to control, the potency and the count. Potency is simply how much damage burn deals on turn end, keep in mind that this damage is true damage, which means it will ignore any damage modifiers or protection the enemy may have, which can be useful for damaging enemies with high defense levels, protection stacks, or a damage resistance that disadvantages you.

Count is also pretty standard, as it shows how many potential times burn damage can activate until the count reaches zero, resetting any stack of burn potency to zero as well. Luckily unless versing against a large group of enemies you shouldn't need to worry about burn count, as count is piss easy to stack since you only loose 1 burn count at turn end, while all the other main debuffs (Sinking, Rupture, Bleed & Tremor) loose count much quicker; making stacking high amounts of potency tough.

While burn's low-demand count does make it easy to use, it also makes burn's potential damage much lower than other statuses, since for example a 22 potency bleed stack with 7 count count potentially proc 5 times dealing 110 damage in 1 turn, while a 22 potency burn stack with 7 count would only deal 22 damage on turn end max. Aside from cases where there are multiple enemies or abnormality body parts you can stack count on (and even then this is icky since only some ID's apply count on their S2s only, although this is still way better than other statuses) burn ends up dealing a lot less damage than other damages, and this problem is further exasperated by the fact that status effects can only stack up to 99 on potency and count meaning burn can only deal 99 damage max on one target while other statuses can deal thousands under proper circumstances (I see you sinking deluge).

While these problems may paint burn in an unfortunate light, there is a saving grace in the form of a unique burn status effect, that practically solves any problems burn previously had...
