Introduction

An attempt to collate a bunch of useful tips and explantions that help deal with the massive world of Football Manager.

Development

Arsene Wenger: "Young players need freedom of expression to devlop as creative

players…they should be encouraged to try skills wihout fear of failure."

Players age 24 and older are unlikely to dramatically improve their skills through training or natural growth.

Players naturally develop their mental abilities through the experience of growing up with age.

Goalkeepers typically have their peak between the ages of 31 and 35.

Defenders typically have their peak between 27 and 32.

Midfielders typically have their peak between 27 and 32.

Strikers typically have their peak between 26 and 31.

Physical attributes slowly and sometimes diminish at the end of player's career.

Players with high versatility are less likely to lose new positions learned through retraining when they are not playing in that position. Players with a higher versatility will also perform better in new positions.

During off-season, when you go on vacation or hardly train, your abilities will naturally decrease.

Training is most important before the athlete turns 18. After that, game time is more important. Slightly expanding on training, if you're unsure how to do the schedules, the AI staff don't do a bad job at this part of FM, and you can always do invidual role training for the players to learn the role you use in your tactic(s).

With this said if you choose to loan out players, you need to pick carefully when you loan them out to. Take into account the teams training facilities, the squad overall personality and their coaching staff.

I generally look for either Excellent, Superb or State of the Art Facilities with a highly squad Professional personality.

The personality of the players chosen to welcome the new recruits can also impact their personality.

Head of Youth Development can affect the youth intake player's personalities.

To have the u23s/u18s underneath the Dev Centre, you need to take control of either their individual or general training.

Injuries

Josh Altman: "If I could do it before, I can do it again."

If a player is injured, it's very unlikely that offers will come in for them until they have recovered.

Hamstring, knee ligament, and achilles tendon injuries can impede a player's ability and mobility, either short-term or permanently.

Injuries affecting the spine or shoulder can hamper an athlete's agility in the short term or permanently.

Severe or career-threatening injuries can hinder a player's bravery, but may come back later with time.

You can also use the Injury Rehab focus that can help a players lost attributes due to injury recover. This will also revert once the player is back from their injury.

The average team will suffer between 50 and 70 first-team injuries per season. This means that on average 25 players will suffer an average of 2.5 injuries per player.

Man Management

Arsene Wenger: If you put the wrong petrol in the car it's not going to go very far. For a human being it's exactly the same, you have to prepare the right way.

If you tell a player in advance that you are resting him for a match, you can avoid concerning the player if he doesn't make the first 11/bench.

With unhappy players, asking a team leader to speak to them often has a high chance of success to remove their concern. The longer they've been at the club and the team leader's age, the higher the chance of success.

(Right click team leader > Speak About > Team-mate Happiness > Concern > Player)

Furthermore if you're team is struggling for form, you can attempt to do a team meeting to raise morale.

(Dynamics > Team Meeting)

You will need to be mindful of the option you choose as it will depend on how your team is performing and what is expected of the club. For example if you've been doing well most of the season but hit a bad patch of form, the option "don't let your heads drop I know you have the ability" often raises morale.

The safer approach is also to look for other ways to praise invidual players, such as those that have been doing well in training and getting a rating of 8 or more.

Transfers

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: "Zlatan doesn't do auditions."

If you have a player that keeps refusing transfers from other clubs. Make sure you have put him on the transfer list, surplus to requirements and move him to the u23s/u18s. This will reduce the chances of them rejecting the transfer.

Using installments to get players is very worthwhile as you can usually get at least double the amount of value out of that particular transfer window. Just be weary to not overdo and ruin your finances for the future.

If your manager/club has a high reputation, constantly showing interest in a player can make them disgruntled and want to leave. This can often lead to them being added to the transfer list for a cheaper price.

Stopping the board from selling your player(s):

If a bid has already been accepted for a player that you want to keep, offer them out for nothing. Hopefully a higher prestige club will come in and the player would rather go to them. You will then be able to cancel the transfer. This only works if the player chose a different club than to which the board accepted the offer from.

If no bid has been placed yet, offer the player out for nothing but then set the director to reject all offers. Both of these methods will more than likely concern the player in question.

December 30th you can start offering players a contract for your club if their's expires for a different club that season. Some exceptions being if you are in the English Premier League, you won't be able to offer a player's whose also in the English Premier League a contract. Also worth nothing their wage demands can differ largely from December 30th/31st to Jan 1st.

Yeap you read that right. If you start with Borussia Dortmund you can negotiate the existing affiliation and state it would be useful to use them to help recruit foreign youngsters. This will get you first dibs on Real Madrid's players!

Below is a list of clubs that have achieved glory in the past that are in Europe's top 5 nations - Spain, England, Italy, Germany, and France. I've not included top league teams (examples AC and Inter Milan) as they have very good squads. I've initially only done three for each nation.
