How to game the system by limiting resident NPCs

Visitor Center

Several NPCs have specific triggers to add them to the visitor’s site rotation list. The more NPCs in rotation, the less likely any specific one will show up, including NPCs you are focused on moving in.

Rayne is triggered by acquiring the farming license.

Irwin is triggered by acquiring the animal handling license.

Melvin is triggered by upgrading your tent to a house.

Sally and Sheila are triggered once you have five NPC residents living permanently on your island. By not triggering these requirements, you can explicitly exclude those NPCs from the visitor site, thus limiting the visitors to John, Theo, Franklyn, Clover, as well as Max and Julia on their respective contest days if the museum is built.

It’s advised to move John in as soon as possible as you need him for access to basic tools. Theo has no specific trigger but will become available for moving in once you talk to him on his first visit, thus removing him from rotation once the museum is built. Thus, only Clover and Franklyn should be in regular rotation if you have avoided upgrading your tent to a house or purchased either the farming or animal handling licensees.

Most people focus on getting Franklyn to move in quickly and gaining reliable nearly daily access to him and his equipment. However, if you’re a fashionista, focusing on Clover to get her to move in gives you nearly daily access to new clothes, shoes, hats, and glasses. After moving either in, you can focus on another specific NPC by only triggering their requirements, such as getting their license, but not upgrading the tent or getting other triggering licenses. The fifth NPC move in then triggers Sally and Sheila, neither of which are particularly useful in early to mid-game, so make your fourth and fifth choices well.

Milburn, the banker doesn’t visit and will only move in after you have spent a certain number of dinks.

The current game code has been confirmed as of March 2024 by a Discord Mod that works with the developer that both Sheila and Sally should only start appearing once you have five total NPCs as residents. However, some players have reported getting them earlier which may be a bug.

Fish And Bug Contest

You can also game the system in other ways through this tactic.

The bug and fish contest have three awards apiece and the game only has certain NPCs participating and some NPCs like Fletch never compete. By limiting how many NPCs are on your island, you can limit the total number of competitors and thus ensure you can easily get each of the awards without too much trouble.

Bronze and Silver tend to be harder to win as you can’t just go all out to get a huge score. Golds are easy to get, just catch everything you can from 9 am to 4 pm. For bronze and silver, you’ll need to place in between NPC scores which only come in on certain log in times when you log your points and at the end. And the differences between second and third can be extremely tight, for example:

This can get difficult when 4-6 NPCs are all vying for a place on the stands. By having only a few NPCs on your island on a competition day, you can ensure a silver or a bronze. If only you only have John on the island, one point guarantees you a silver award. If only John and Franklyn are on the island, one point guarantees the bronze.

Bulletin Board & Hearts

Limiting NPCs can also game the bulletin board system.

Bulletin board tasks appear to be randomly assigned by NPCs, so having just a few residents ensures that those tasks and more importantly the hearts that come with those completed tasks will accumulate on a few NPCs, helping you get to 5 hearts faster on a limited number on NPCs. This then lets you focus later in the game on the newer NPCs on boosting their heart relationship levels.
