Valkyrie
This guide describes each Black Desert Online valkyrie move. It begins to discuss the best uses and intentions for each move. A few of the pivotal short combos are mentioned.

Pre Awakening
Your main weapon is your longsword, and you need to spend time practising with it to unlock your awakening weapon. Awakening gives huge potential damage and useful new abilities that complete the move set. You can use either weapon and switch at any time but to be most effective you need to use both as they carry a similar but distinctively different tool set.
There is no best gear, find your favourite stats and gear. As soon as possible smash black stones into green grade gear.

An alternative control scheme is to use F to Jump and Space Bar for Special Action 3.
Some of the important character stats and how to up them:

Elion’s Blessing
Is one of your ultimate abilities, activated by putting it on the hotbar and pressing the hotkey, it will grant you many debuff resistances, making you almost unstoppable, similar to all around guard - attacks that might interrupt you with some kind of stun will basically never work. It’s good for tense boss moments and of course, avoiding being trapped in a rain of attacks from a ranger to your side.
Potions
Replenish your HP or SP very quickly for a silver cost. Also costs inventory space and weight usage. SP can instead be recharged over time using kicks, basic attacks, breath of elion or vow of trust. HP is dependent on breath of elion’s cooldown so if your level and evasion are low you’ll need potions.
Righteous Charge
Your sword charge. Costs no SP, only stamina which you have when not sprinting. You can drop the last hit of sword of judgement immediately after. Has the best skill add-ons of them all. +10% casting speed for you, -10% attack speed for the target. This is your initiation move before a blitz of attacks, and with a fast cooldown you’ll need to use it again soon to keep up the flurry of attacks. Can be used quickly with the lancia equipped by doing a reverse death line chase, which is guarded, or sideways shield chase, which is unguarded. If the hits of righteous charge miss and you begin to tumble, either hold down guard, or do a flying kick to make a quick knockback attempt and allow you to drop the last hit of sword of judgement.
Hastiludium
Your lancia charge. Costs no SP, only stamina which you have when not sprinting. Inflicts knockback and many strong attacks, but leaves you in a vulnerable position without a plan. And the plan is, usually, to dash out and leave the dangerous area very soon after. This move is useful for its movement and knockback.
Sharp Light
Your sword air attack, also a throw. Your valkyrie pierces through the air with her sword in an attempt to throw the enemy. You can drop the last hit of sword of judgement immediately after your throw. In the form of a ranged attack it gives you many possibilities for positioning before you use it and is very effective on a line of enemies in front of you. If your level and accuracy are enough to land the hit, and your ignore resistance high enough to beat the enemies’ resistances, they’ll be thrown backward through the air. It is also a great move to put the attack against monsters skill add-on on, you can use sharp light on cooldown to very quickly refresh the buff. The move also has a small pull grouping effect, the smallest of the 3 pull moves. The others being wave of light and glaring slash. The grouping is useful in combo chains and gives a reason to wait for the cooldown before using the move.
Purifiacatone
Your lancia air attack, also a stun. The idea is it uses the shield to push a scary wall of air that will stun targets it hits, like a punishing wind you feel for standing near an unfriendly valkyrie. Skill add-ons are available to make it drain HP and MP/WP/SP over time. You should cancel immediately into guard or another move after using. Has forward guard. The stun doesn’t work when the move is on cooldown.
Sacrum Ferit
Your counter move. 3 hits that let you use your big shield and lancia to quickly react to a dangerous threat while you have them equipped. Holding right click around and through a group of enemies is often a quick and very easy kill, but once the cooldown is active the damage will be much lower. The 3 hits start with a shield counter and then holding right click will do the two lancia attacks, the last of which will reduce the enemy’s evasion, giving you and others a higher chance of landing hits afterwards. Getting to the last hit is slow and will let fast enemies escape. There’s a flow ability which adds another hit to the end every ~20 seconds, which is great for finishing enemies, applying extra damage and landing the evasion debuff but it is very much unguarded and if you hold right click for too long through sanctum ferit the jump can be a weak point in your combo.
Verdict
Your big damage area clear with the lancia. Has a skill add on that gives 10% chance, for each of the ~12 hits, to air smash the enemy and send them flying through the air. Comes at the cost of your guard and it plants you still while you cast it, but it grants super armour, so if your armour would have held up reasonably well against the enemy then it will while casting this attack. The damage is huge, the knockback effect will stagger enemies it hits and if this move is not on cooldown, you can be sure your valkyrie is dreaming up a way to plunge the lancia into a group of enemies lying on the ground. It’s considered a very risky move use, and the biggest risk is that the enemies will escape and be out of range while you’re casting it, giving them time to position around and plan an attack. It’s not an initiation move. Combos well with elion’s blessing but the cooldown and SP cost is too large to exclusively use verdict this way.
Sword Of Judgement
Your sword attack. Two swipes that deal x2 hits each and then the last big hit. With the ultimate you can hold for a few more risky hits. There are many ways to use move cancelling to activate the last swing of sword of judgement. If your attacks aren’t working, check you have your weapons equipped.
Heaven’s Echo
Your PvE taunt and friendly buff, now granting you a big accuracy buff along with friendly players very near you, and gives you some DP. This DP no longer stacks with the DP gained from activating guard stance. Now that the casting valkyries are granted a huge accuracy buff it is essential they do it constantly - start watching for the 1 minute cooldown on your buff bar and practice quickly buffing before and after a group fight. You can use heaven’s echo to activate promptness. This move will taunt the attacks of all hostile non-player enemies, including bosses. Heaven’s echo can be safely activated during the boss’s invincibility frames.
Breath Of Elion
Heals you, heals nearby allies’ HP, replenishes your SP and offers you a chance to activate promptness.
Guard
Press and/or hold the guard button to put up your guard in front of you. You will now block a huge amount of incoming damage, from the front. You are immune to all status debuffs from the front except for grapple - which you can also do yourself, dropping your guard. Other sword attacks will also need you to drop your guard, except for just counter. You can move around slowly while in guard and spin it around by looking in a direction and tapping backwards. You are granted a small DP buff with a cooldown when you finish the animation of activating guard. Guard stance will prevent you from interacting with the game in many ways and will change your evasive moves like quick evasion to shield chase. When you drop guard your character will play the spinning sword animation, and you can almost immediately release and hold the guard button to instantly reactivate your guard. When in lancia guard stance you have many options for attacking while maintaining your forward guard, but they won’t take you very far and will then be on cooldown, so if the enemy are at range it’s exactly what they’ll be expecting and they will make sure to avoid the worst of it.
Shield Push
Attempt knockback, exposing the enemies to further attacks. No cooldown. Usable quickly after a shield evasion.
Kicks
The kicks, flying kick in particular, serve 3 brilliant functions. You don’t really need them for the start of the game. One function is to replenish your SP, and it works when you are on 0 SP or don’t quite have enough for the attack you want to use. Another function, probably the most useful earlier on, is to quickly drop the last hit of sword of judgement. Very good if the hits of righteous charge miss and you begin to tumble. The last function that must be remembered is to zone off grapplers and other dangerous targets that are getting too close for comfort. When the berserker runs up to you, you kick them in the face. You can’t kick with your lancia out.
Glaring Slash
A grouping, mid-combo move for the sword. Not an opening or finishing move but it pulls the enemies in and if you hold for the 2nd or 3rd hit you can immediately drop the last hit of sword of judgement. Works very well after a successful divine power. You are very vulnerable while casting glaring slash so you need to use it on helpless enemies to better position both of you, or to attempt to pull in a group of bound targets.
Divine Power
The best way to describe divine power is that your valkyrie has so much unspent divine power and really needs to do something with it so ♥♥♥♥ it we’ll just slam it into the ground. It has a high SP cost and it’s very close range, in PvE it is best used after Severing Light to turn the enemies around, but either way if you land the hits you will quite briefly bound the enemy, maybe giving you time for a full glaring slash and sword of judgement combo. If you use enough skill points on this move to get the ultimate you can hold right click for even more attacks while your fist is on the ground. When fully levelled the damage is big and makes a satisfying answer to bosses doing an angry slam at you.
Severing Light
Severing Light can be used to quickly burst out a small amount of damage in a wide area in front of you while still in sword, and in PvE has a sort of cut effect, turning the enemy which reduces their evasion and allows back attacks. This often makes a good opportunity to use divine power, then the glaring slash into sword of judgement combo or a promptness lancia transition. Seems a weak PvP attack but there is a place for this move in combos and it’s very fast. There is an ultimate skill which gives an alternative or extra end to the move.
Sideways Cut
A fast, risky evasive move that slightly recharges SP on hits and gives you a chance to activate promptness to transition to lancia. Also it is a quick way to transition out of lancia when you are not in guard stance by pressing your lancia transition button while holding a sideways movement key.
Shield Chase
When in sword guard stance you can hold a directional key and press shift to do a short teleport in that direction. The forward teleport will take you face first into the enemy, and the backward and sideways shield chase will teleport you through enemies and some objects. After a shield chase you can hold down right click and the backwards key to attempt a quick shield strike and drop the last hit of sword of judgement. To make the following attacks much safer you should instead hold right click, sideways direction and shift to do a quick shield dodge, then release the sideways direction key to do a shield push. To use this you need to lure the enemy into your guard then teleport around them unpredictably. You may also want to try disabling just counter by clicking the lock icon.
Shield Throw
An extremely risky move that offers the high reward of stun and if you spend skill points on the flow move, the chance to hold the backwards and guard keys to spin your shield for more damage. You are totally unguarded while throwing your shield, throwing your shield is not recommended.
Noble Spirit
Press your special attack button (E by default) to gain a resistance and casting speed buff, and allow you to sprint unguarded with the lancia equipped until the effect wears off. While sprinting you can rapidly press your left click attack or cast moves extremely quickly when in combination with +10% casting speed from Righteous Charge.
Sanctitas
Accidentally hit the special attack key while in lancia and you will jump into the air, disappear briefly from the game world and reappear falling and attacking above the target you selected with left click. If your black spirit energy has been filled you will cast the full lightning ultimate which is very effective on an unsuspecting enemy while you are mid combo. Not a great opening or finishing move, better fit in the middle of a combo to reposition while dealing damage. You can cast sanctitas after using the sword move celestial spear.
Castagiato
Wide splash attack with lancia that you can spin around while casting. Unguarded, so great for clearing up groups or splashing in damage when guarded moves will be needed off cooldown.
Wave Of Light
Your best grouping ability with a ~25 second cooldown. Target an enemy, or a spot on the ground if no enemies are in view, then hold backwards and the special attack key to cast the ability, then always always immediately cancel the unguarded cast into your guard stance. You can death line chase forward to immediately do a guarded movement into the group of enemies.
Terra Sancta
Using the same input as sword of judgement this gives you a quick burst of damage at long range with a debuff attempt. This move is very slow and predictable, leaving you in an obvious position after casting. It is given to you later as more of a convenience gift. If your level and accuracy allow you to land the hits, the damage will be strong.
Blitz Stab
An unguarded extra damage option with lancia, black spirit ultimate adds damage that can be very quickly unloaded.
Judgement Of Light
A sword ultimate that burns your SP to unleash an awesome laser beam light show, in a longer cast and full circle around you if your black spirit energy is full. Once you have your lancia it’s probably not worth taking unless you really want to spend skill points on area damage attacks. Once the skill points are spent to fully level this attack it is very strong.
Shining Dash
A sword ultimate that gives you another charge, this time guarded but does not give you a last hit sword of judgement drop and leaves you vulnerable if you don’t get the kill or have a plan to escape.
Celestial Spear
A ranged sword attack that is very helpful when you have only one charge attack, but with awakening this attack is less helpful as you are able to alternate your charges and air attacks. Celestial spear has a chance of trapping with status abnormalities for a long time and gives an opportunity to switch to lancia by jumping on the target but this is risky unless other damage or stuns have been dealt to the area, or will be by teammates. You can quickly use celestial spear in some situations with the lancia such as after a forward death line chase.
Left Clicks
Aren’t great, but they deal damage and recharge your SP. There are great moments to use them and the sideways left clicks give you movement options. Rarely better than backwards death line chase or backwards shield chase and repositioning then reengaging with casted attacks. Skill points recommended elsewhere. Counter and sideways cut are the best left click attacks.
Just Counter
A sword move you can use to poke enemies while in guard stance. Easy to override input for a different move with this one. Enables a long knockback attack if the hits land, and has low risk from the front but being in sword the attack does not allow quick escape from enemies to the side or other guarded attacks to follow easily. Very much optional since lancia provides so many guarded attacks and you have to be in an undesirable position to use just counter, hence why it is a counter move. Recommended to disable for practice.
Skyward Strike
In a similar way to the sanctum ferit flow jump, this sword jump punch gives a risky chance of an air smash that also deals decent damage when skill points are spent on it. Can be used from guard stance or will often include itself in a combo involving righteous charge. Similar to the sanctum ferit flow I have this move disabled for practice.
Jump Slash
With sword equipped, press the jump key to 'lift' your character, let go and quickly hold LMB to 'push' your character to the ground faster than a natural fall. If you can't see the difference try when over maximum weight limit it's slightly more obvious, and the mini map shows the speed up effect better. Offers promptness activation.
Promptness
Is how you should equip your lancia. Promptness is a quick lancia 'step' that can be activated after most sword and lancia skills. Promptness could probably have its own guide this length but here I will mention that in my controls I use Space Bar for Special Attack 3 and official mouse software to allow me to press a button on the side of my mouse to press Jump.
Notes
Counter, Punishment and Celestial Spear are difficult situational moves. All information in this guide was my opinion at time of writing however the game changes frequently. My current control changes are Special Action 3 on Space Bar, Jump on J (with J on a side mouse button), F1 to F3 for navigation and mount controls and F9 to F12 for UI Hotkeys.
