7 Days 2 Die gameplay mechanics

Heat

In 7 Days to Die, loud noises and lights attract zombies. This manifests in two ways:

1. Existing nearby zombies can "hear" you and come to punch you (The stealth system)

2. The game can spawn a horde or a screamer (who spawns a horde)

Heat is generated a variety of player actions and also by stationary tools, such as the campfire. The augur and chainsaw in particular generate a tremendous amount of heat, such that it is highly likely that any augur-based mining expedition will trigger retaliation.

Heat will always cause zombies to spawn if it reaches a certain threshhold, and has a chance to spawn while below that level. Spawns consume heat. Heat is also automatically removed after a certain duration (depending on the action but typically 5 ingame hours.)

Note that if a screamer spawns a horde, and you use guns to fight that horde, you can easily generate enough heat to spawn an additional screamer- Even if you don't hit the automatic spawn threshhold, it's possible for the percent-chance-over-time spawn to manifest from the heat.

The wiki page has exact tables for this.

Gamestage And Lootstage

Gamestage is a hidden variable the game uses when deciding how many and what kind of zombies to spawn. It is approximately equal to your level, plus the current day (with a difficulty multiplier.)

Lootstage is similar, but not affected by total days passed: it's just your character level, plus any perks and items that say they impact loot quality. (So a level 20 character with Lucky Looter 1, which grants a 5% bonus, will find loot as though they were actually level 21)

Thus, a level 50 character might walk into a house and be attacked by a dozen radiation zombies, and then open a gun chest to find an auto shotgun with 150 shells, while a level 1 character would have encountered a single normal zombie and looted a pipe shotgun with four shells.

Note that gamestage and lootstage are only part of the equation for determining zombie and loot spawns. Biome, container type, and POI type are all factored in as well. (The best loot is in places like a gun safe in a vast and dangerous complex in the wasteland)

Points Of Interest (POI)

The world of 7D2D is made of randomly generated terrain sprinkled with Points of Interest. Basically every building is a Point of Interest, except in the rare case of several buildings being grouped together into one big POI. POI's may by re-used throughout a world; don't be surprised if you see the exact same gas station more than once, with the same loot crate in the same rooftop hiding place.

Every POI has a tier, which impacts the zombies and loot which spawn. Some POIs will only spawn in certain biomes; some are marked as city or wilderness and will only spawn near/far from other POIs.

Traders And Quests

Traders have items to trade, as well as offering quests. There are five different traders, each of whom specializes in a different type of good, increasing the probability that they'll have that stuff for sale.

Note that every town and city will spawn a trader somewhere (except for the old west shantytown) on the outskirts, so there may be much more than 5. Your map may not generate all 5 types.

Quests offer a reward of cash, XP, and your choice of quest reward from a small random pool. In addition, once you've done enough quests, (Seven quests of your current highest level) you'll gain a special dialogue option called "Opening New Trade Routes" that directs you to find a new trader. This unlocks the next "Tier" of quests.

Quest Tier is tied to POI tier; higher level quests point towards larger, more dangerous areas, but also offer better rewards. It is generally a good idea to do quests more or less constantly: You want to explore and loot new POIs anyway, so you might as well get paid on top of that.

That's Everything That Springs To Mind!

I'll add more stuff later maybe. I hope you live a hundred years and never sprain your ankle.
