Important Things to Consider When Making Your First Deck

Important Things to Consider When Making Your First Deck

Overview Of The Guide.

One of the things that I hear people say a lot when it comes to Master Duel is to play what you like, and I do agree with this mindset, however Master Duel doesn't allow for the desired freedom when it comes to Deck building.

The reason why I wanted to make this guide is to help new players decided on their first few decks to make mainly to help them farm gems and not suffer through burnout. The thing is that if you want to play whatever you want from the get go, then you might find it harder to salvage whatever gems and craft points you already spent on the game because you get 10 UR Craft points from each dismantled card, and if you build your first Deck by spending 300 UR Craft Points then Dismantling them will net back 100 Craft Points which is a waste, so It's best to make that situation not happen at all.

Now, if You are already there, then it's fine. There is always room to recover.

Your First Deck

The Main Purpose of your First Deck is to climb the Ranked Ladder

When it's time to make your first deck, the key component is that it needs to be good enough to go through Ranked.

The reason why is that it's your main way of earning gems, and as much as it pains me to say so, going with any deck won't take you so far.

Examples of Decks to Avoid as your First Deck

Sky Striker

Labrynth

Vanquish Soul

If you just read the examples you might be confused on why, so Allow me to show you an example with Sky Striker.

This is a random deck that someone uses for Sky Striker, take note of two Key Things here.

There is a lot of UR Cards.

The Extra Deck has only two generic cards.

Sky Striker is a big trap to fall into mainly with how restrictive the Archetype is. One thing that you will find is that you can't run Sky Striker cards into other decks, and that Sky Striker decks are mainly and heavily composed of Sky Striker cards. Which means that the Craft Point and Gem investments are really not giving much returns. Like this example Uses 8 UR cards in the Extra deck that aren't flexible to be ran into other decks.

The Reason why this is important is If you have a card like "Super Starslayer TY-PHON - Sky Crisis". They will fit into many decks, thus, reducing the total needed UR Craft Points by 30 for Future Decks.

What decks should you build then?

Examples of Decks to Build as your First Deck

Horus

Bystial

Snake-Eye

Strength Aside, These Decks are mainly made of cards that are highly flexible, and can be ran into many other decks since they have powerful cards that will open up other decks.

This isn't telling you to build these decks in particular, but if you are undecided, then build a deck that can be ran into other decks to minimize spending UR Craft Points on cards for your next deck until you can slowly build it in it's entirely while still keeping it playable as you build it.

The Best Ways To Find Cards For Your First Deck

The Best way without a doubt is the Selection Packs

This is the most recent Selection Pack as of Making this guide.

The Reasons why you would want to prioritize the Selection Packs.

They include the most recent and powerful Cards.

They have limited spread of Cards to make the decision to dismantle much easier.

They sometimes lead to the Secret Packs of desired Decks.

They are typically released alongside appropriate events to make participation easier (i.e water cards alongside water event)

They typically have the cards that are most compatible with other Decks.

The Selection Packs often contain the Core Cards for many decks, though when opting for them make sure to Dismantle any cards from other decks to quickly build up the deck you want to use.

The Second Best way is to go for a Structure Deck.

You Want to either build of the Structure Deck you get from being a New Player or Getting One that has Cards the can be used for other decks such as:

Vortex of Magic (Has "Magicians' Souls" which goes into many Decks)

Burning Spirit (Has Salamangreat Links which pair up well with FIRE Decks)

Cybernetic Succesor (Great Starter that has "Fusion Deployment")

KEY NOTE ABOUT STRUCTURE DECKS!

The Third Way which, while good, requires the most gem investment is getting the Secret Packs.

The Secret Packs are best if you have a good amount of gems to spend, but I don't mainly recommend them since since they only have 4 out of 8 cards to be of a certain group of cards. This does mean that you might get generic cards like "Called By the Grave", however, I'd rather advise you don't focus on them because it's better to get the core of the Deck that allows you to win then get the counter cards to fortify your deck.

I know this sounds like the opposite of what I am saying, but you might get cards that you wouldn't run as much as you like with cards like "Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill". and sometimes you'd want an extra copy of a core card as opposed to a counter card that you wouldn't be able to play most of the time.

Key notes about Secret Packs:

You get a Free Pull whenever a new secret pack gets released/updated, and a second one if you craft a UR/SR cards that is available in a pack.

Make sure to craft the cards you need that reveal multiple packs as opposed to one.

Always prioritize crafting the card you need the most copies of as opposed to single copy cards.

Your Second Deck & Beyond.

Now, that you have made your First Deck, The Second Deck that you need to make has to be drastically different from the first one.

What this means is that if your first Deck was ,for example, a "Yubel" Deck.

Take note of everything that "Yubel" decks fufill.

They can Link Summon frequently.

They Contain Fiend-Type monsters.

They Contain Mostly DARK monsters.

With this in mind, Making a "Labrynth" Deck as your Second Deck isn't the best idea because:

They can Link Summon frequently.

They Contain Fiend-Type monsters.

They Contain Mostly DARK monsters.

and the reason is that it wouldn't help you in completing mission nor give more options to enter Festivals.

Example of a mission that requires certain summoning methods.

Events that yield hefty amounts of Gems that would be difficult to climb through without a proper deck.

If I were to recommend you a few second decks then they would be:

Centur-Ion (Synchro Focused)

Voiceless Voice (Ritual Focused)

Generaider (Xyz Focused)

Branded (Fusion Focused)

This would all depend on the event in reality, so it's best to save resources until the next event shows up, then it would be the best time to decide for your Second Deck.

"What if I want to create a Paleozoic Deck or an Exodia Deck?"

Go for it, the purpose here is to help you consider somethings that might go over your head when wanting to make a deck, A deck like Paleozoic is flexible to an extent and is most importantly cheap, however the problem here becomes a matter of resilience. Remember that you can make a cheap and powerful deck, but it might not help you get the rewards quickly if you go through certain events, and I don't imagine everyone has the time or luck needed to depend on a deck like Exodia for example.

"What if the Deck I built got banned?"

Decks "Barely" die when they get effected by the ban list, Like Tearlaments is still competitve even after being hit by the Banlist, and other decks might become stronger in the future when support comes out for it, like Fire-Kings for Snake eyes, or Yubel for Unchained Souls. It might be best to stay on certain cards and not dismantle the rest of the deck in case that happens.

Also, that's why I recommend buying from the Selection Packs since they came out with Banlist updates.

Ultimately you should ponder about these questions before making a deck

How is it different from my current decks?

Do I already have a sizeable amount of the needed cards?

How much cards does it have that can be used in different decks?

How easily attainable is the Deck?

Will it help in overcoming "X" event quickly?

I Hope This Guide Proves Useful To You, and I Do Wish You The Best Of Luck
