Using RealTimeTrains

RTT Basics

RTT is a reasonably simple thing to use, once you get your head around what everything means.

1: Stations

Here[www.realtimetrains.co.uk] is a timetable for Gatwick Airport on 05/12/18 at around 8am.

Plan Arr - This means what time the train should arrive. Pass means the train is not scheduled to stop.

Act Arr - This means what time the train actually arrived on that day.

Origin - This means where the train came from. BE CAREFUL! Certain trains divide and attach. Therefore when the train only shows one origin, it may be that the train has come from 2/3 and attached. Only one will be shown. See the frequently quiered trains section to find out which trains are most likely to be from 2 or more origins. 'Starts here' in this section means the train starts from the place.

Pl - The platform the train will arrive on/pass through. Anything which is blank or has some letters means that the train is passing through tracks which do not have a platform. This does not apply to stations such as Waterloo East and New Cross, where platforms are allocated A-D rather than 1-4.

ID - The unique 4 character reporting number. FRGT is always a freight/light engine movement.

TOC - The Train Operating Company. Codes for these can be found in the TOC Codes section.

Destination - Where the train is going. BE CAREFUL! Certain trains divide and attach. Therefore when the train only shows one destination, it may be that the train is going to 2/3 and will divide. Only one will be shown. See the frequently quiered trains section to find out which trains are most likely to be going to 2 or more destinations. 'Terminates here' in this section means the final stop on the train is the place you are at.

Plan Dep - When the train is planned to depart. If a train displays a pass in the Plan Arr section, the time shown is when the train passes through.

Act Dep - When the train actually left on that day.

Other:

Trains highlighted in blue means an empty stock/freight/light engine movement.

Trains in italics indicate trains which are not scheduled to stop at the place.

2: Trains

Here[www.realtimetrains.co.uk] is the schedule for the 2C42 1529 Leeds to York on the 22nd of August 2018.

Schedule Information: This stuff is not needed.

Operational Information: 'Timed for' usually means the top speed of the train that will operate it.

'Pathed as' means what train is scheduled to run. This is usually accurate but can sometimes not be. For more detailed stuff on the operational info, visit the 'How Each Class is Displayed' section of this guide.

Passenger Information: This is purely the seating arrangements for the journey.

Location: This is where the train is scheduled to pass/stop. Bold, blue locations indicate a stopping point while italic, grey locations indicate a loaction the train is schedules to pass. Blue locations that are not bold indicate a non-passenger stop.

Pl: The platform the train is scheduled to pass/stop. Where no platform is shown, it means you will have to excersie route knowledge and common sense.

WTT: The Working Timetable. This is when the train is scheduled to arrive (arr), depart (dep) or pass (a pass in the arr column and a time in the dep column).

GBTT: The Great Britain Timetable. This is the time the train is displayed to the public. Therefore only stations where it stops at are in theis column. The same arr and dep rules apply.

How Each Class Is Displayed - Locos

NOTE THAT THIS SECTION DOES NOT INCLUDE FREIGHT RUNNING. This is because exact information on what freight train is hauled by what loco and has what wagons is not available from RTT.

Class 37:

Northern Rail: This is pathed as a diesel locomotive, trailing load 140 tonnes. It may also be a class 68. Northern only operate 1 37 set and 1 68 set in total. Please see this page[www.railforums.co.uk] for exact diagrams.

Greater Anglia: This is pathed as a diesel locomotive, trailing load 105 tonnes.

Class 43:

Cross Country: This is pathed as a HST timed for 125mph max.

East Midland Trains: This is pathed as a HST timed for 110mph max. RTT does not differentiate between the normal and short (Ex-Grand Central) HST sets. See this page[frequently-requested-diagrams.wikia.com] for specific diagrams.

First Great Western: This is pathed as a HST timed for 125mph max. Note that class 800s and 802s (IETs) are not yet given different allocations, so one has to take the following information into accounts: London to Cardiff, Bristol, Weston-super-Mare, Taunton via Bristol, Exeter via Bristol and Swansea services are almost certainly going to be IETs. London to Cheltenham Spa, Gloucester, Worcester, Hereford, Great Malvern, Moreton-in-Marsh and Oxford services could be either a HST or an IET. London to Pembroke Dock, Paignton, Plymouth, Newquay, Penzance, Frome, Exeter via Berks & Hants Line and Bristol via Berks & Hants are almost certainly HST operated. Of course, there are anomalies: Some Swansea services are HST operated just as a couple of Plymouth services are operated by IETs.

The HST Short Set currently works these services[frequently-requested-diagrams.wikia.com] . These are pathed as a class 150 would be, so please see that section.

London NorthEastern Railway: This is pathed as a HST timed for 125mph max.

ScotRail: This is pathed as a Disesl Locomotive trailing load 324 tonnes timed for 100mph max. Currently, they operate a very limited number of passenger services between Edinburgh and Aberdeen (with some extensions to Dyce & Inverurie). Other test runs are between Glasgow Queen Street, Haymarket, Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth and Inverness. Do not confuse it with the class 68, which only run certain Fife Circle Line services.

Class 57:

First Great Western: This is pathed as a diesel locomotive, trailing load 350 tonnes.

Class 67:

Arriva Trains Wales: This train is pathed as a diesel locomotive, trailing load 140 tonnes, timed for 100mph max.

Caledonian Sleeper: This train is pathed as a diesel locomotive, trailing load 210 tonnes, timed for 90mph max from Fort William (services to Fort William may be pathed differently but will have this train), a diesel locomotive, trailing load 385 tonnes timed for 125mph max (services to Inverness may be pathed differently but will have this train) and a diesel locomotive, trailing load 350 tonnes timed for 125mph max from Aberdeen (services to Aberdeen may be pathed differently but will have this train). All services could be operated by a class 73 (mainly the Fort William and Aberdeen portions).

Class 68:

Chiltern Railways: This train is not distinguished from the class 168/172 on the CH fleet. Therefore, these[www.railforums.co.uk] trains will be the ones operated by 68's.

Northern: See class 37.

ScotRail: This is pathed as a diesel locomotive, trailing load 245 tonnes, timed for 100mph max. These are the services that are operated by a class 68.[frequently-requested-diagrams.wikia.com] Do not confuse this with their HSTs, which operate long-distance services between Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth and Inverness.

Class 73:

See Class 67 (Caledonian Sleeper section).

Class 86/87:

Caledonian Sleeper: Used on all ECS moves in and out of Euston. They may be used on class 92 services when a class 92 fails.

Class 90:

Abellio Greater Anglia: This train is pathed as an electric locomotive, trailing load 350 tonnes, timed for 100mph max.

Caledonian Sleeper: They may be used on class 92 services.

Class 91:

Virgin Trains East Coast: This is pathed as an electric locomotive, trailing load 410 tonnes, timed for 125mph max.

Class 92:

Caledonian Sleeper: This train is timed as an electric locomotive, trailing load 595 tonnes, timed for 100mph but ONLY FROM EUSTON. Therefore all Caledonian sleeper trains that run on electrified track can be taken to have a class 92 as the loco. Class 86s and 90s may be used when a class 92 fails.

How Each Class Is Displayed - D(E)MUs

Class 139: This will show up as a 150/153/155/156 Sprinter. Any service between Stourbridge Town and Stourbridge Junction will be operated by a class 139. Any other service will not be.

Class 142: This will show up as a 14x Pacer. You will need to check to see what pacers the relevent TOC runs. If it is more than 1 then a bit of imagination will have to be use here!

Class 143: As class 142.

Class 144: As class 142.

Class 150: This will show up as a 150/153/155/156 Sprinter.

Abellio ScotRail: Only 156s. However, the service could also be a 158 or 170.

Arriva Trains Wales: 150s and 153s. There isn't much difference in routes that they operate. Cardiff Bay services are always 153 operated. The 153 appears on no other Valley Line services except the City Line (Coryton to Radyr). The service could also be operated by a 142 or 143.

East Midlands Trains: 153s and 156s. Again, there isn't much difference in routes that they operate. Greater Anglia: 153s and 156s. Again, there isn't much difference in routes that they operate. The service could also be a class 170. 153s do not operate services from Norwich to Cambridge.

Great Western Railway: 150s and 153s. GWR have very few 153s left. They tend to work services around Exeter. The service could also be a 158 or even the HST Short Set. The HST Short Set currently works these services[frequently-requested-diagrams.wikia.com] .

Northern: 150s, 153s, 155s and 156s: Northern is very complicated. The "Northern Random Unit Generator" can throw any unit up on any service. There are a few rules that should be observed: 155s only operate on services around Leeds. Only 156s (along with 142s) operate around Newcastle, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Whitby, Saltburn, Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness. 153s can also operate on the Settle-Carlisle Line, but it is mainly a 158 route. 142s and 153s also operate infrequently on the Cumbrian Coast Line. Former TransPennine services from Barrow and Windermere to Oxenholme, Lancaster, Preston and Manchester are only 153 and 156 operated.

West Midland Trains: 150s and 153s. Only the Snow Hill Lines, Birmingham-Hereford, Worcester and Rugeley TV and Bedford to Bletchley are operated by Sprinters. Also see the 172 entry.

Class 153: As class 150.

Class 155: As class 150.

Class 156: As class 150.

Class 158: This will show up as a 158 Express Sprinter timed for 90 mph max. If it is not 90mph, then it is another class.

Abellio ScotRail: All Far North and Kyle Line services. Other services may be a 156 or a 170.

Arriva Trains Wales: All Cambrian Coast Line services, and most services to/from Birmingham. Other services may be a 150, 153 or 175 unit.

East Midlands Trains: Most Norwich to Liverpool Lime Street services, although they can appear on most rural EMT services (so not those to/from London).

Great Western Railway: Most Portsmouth to Cardiff services, although they also appear on services to/from Brighton and other rural GWR services.

Northern: See class 150. 158s appear on various services such as services around Barrow-in-Furness the Calder Valley Line, Preston to Leeds, York to Hull, Scarborough/Bridlington to Hull and Sheffield, Leeds to Lincoln/Nottingham.

South Western Railway: Any 159 route as well as Salisbury to Romsey and the Lymington Pier Branch (weekdays only).

Class 159: This will show up as a 159 Express Sprinter.

Class 165: Chiltern Railways: Pathed as a Diesel Multiple Unit and pathed for 75mph max.

Great Western Railway: Could be either a 165, 166 or 387. It is pathed as a 165/1 or 166 (Turbo) DMU. Services from Paddington to Maidenhead, Reading or Didcot Parkway will most likely be a class 387. Other services will be a class 165 or 166.

Class 166: See class 165.

Class' 168, 170, and 171: This will show up as a Class 158 Express Sprinter timed for 100mph. Chiltern Railway services will be operated by class 168's or class 172's. You will need to refer the the routes that each class operates on in order to find what class it is. If it is more than 1, a bit of imagination will have to be excersied! Abellio Greater Anglia, Cross Country, First TransPennine Express, London Midland and ScotRail trains will be operated by a class 170. Southern servies will be operated by a class 171.

Class 172: Chiltern Railways: This will show up as a Class 158 Express Sprinter timed for 100mph. Services will be operated by class 168's or class 172's. You will need to refer the the routes that each class operates on in order to find what class it is. If it is more than 1, a bit of imagination will have to be excersied!

West Midlands Trains: This will show up as a Diesel Multiple Unit timed for 100mph max. This is the same for a class 170, so you will need to check what class runs on what routes, or use some imagination. Some services may also be a Sprinter, so see the class 150 section.

London Overground: This will show up as a Class 150/153/155/156 Sprinter timed for 75mph max.

Class 175: This will show up as a Class 158 Express Sprinter timed for 100mph. If it is timed for 90mph, it is a class 158. If it is timed for 100mph, then it is a class 175.

Class 180: This will be pathed as a Diesel Multiple Unit timed for 125mph. To avoid confusion with the class 221 (operated by VT) class 222, and class 180, only EMT operate 222s while GW, GC and HT operated 180s.

Class 185:

TransPennine & Northern: This will be pathed as a Diesel Multiple Unit timed for 100mph.

Class 220: Cross Country: This will be pathed as a Class 220/221 Voyager. There is no distinction between the 2 so a bit of imagination will have to be used.

Class 221: This will be pathed as a Class 220/221 Voyager. There is no distinction between the 2 so a bit of imagination will have to be used with XC.

Virgin Trains: This will be pathed as a Diesel Multiple Unit timed for 125mph. To avoid confusion with the class 221 operated by VT, class 222, only EM operate 222's while GC, HT and GW operate 180's.

Class 222: This will be pathed as a Diesel Multiple Unit timed for 125mph. To avoid confusion with the class 221 operated by VT, class 222, only EM operate 222's while GC, HT and GW operate 180's.

How Each Class Is Displayed - EMUs

Class 313: Southern: This train is never pathed, always trains are as class 377's. Therefore, all 377s on Coastway routes with standard only seating should be taken as 313s, while first and standard denotes 377s.

Great Northern: This service is pathed as a class 313 EMU timed for 75mph max.

Class 314: This train is pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit, timed for 75mph max. To avoid confusion with the class 318, 320 and 334, the 314 operated on the following lines: Cathcart Circle Lines, Inverclyde Line, and Paisley Canal Line. The 318's and 320's operate the Iverclyde Line, North Clyde Line (but not beyond Airdrie), Argyle Line and Whifflet Line. The 334 operates on the North Clyde Line.

Class 315: This train is pathed as a Class 315 EMU, timed for 75mph max.

Class 317: This train is pathed as a Class 317 EMU, timed for 100pmh max.

Class 318: See class 314.

Class 319:

London Midland: Patched as a Class 321 EMU timed for 100mph or EMU timed for 100mph.

Northern: Any Liverpool to Wigan/Preston/Manchester via St Helens/Warrington service. Most likely timed as a Pacer or Sprinter.

Thameslink: The train no longer runs on Thameslink.

Class 320: See class 314.

Class 321: Great Northern and Abellio Greater Anglia: This train is pathed as a Class 321 timed for 100mph max.

Northern Rail: This train is pathed as a class 333 timed for 100mph max. There is no way to tell this from the class 322 and 333.

Southern: This is a miss-pathed dual voltage 377.

Class 322: This train is pathed as a class 333 timed for 100mph max. There is no way to tell this from the class 321 and 333.

Class 323: This is pathed as a Class 323 EMU timed for 90 mph max.

Class 325: This is pathed as an Electric Loco timed for 100mph max.

Class 332: This is pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 100mph max. Any HX services will be a 332 except the Heathrow shuttle, which is a 360. Any non-HX service will not be.

Class 333: See class 322.

Class 334: See class 314.

Class 350: This train is pathed as a Class 350 EMU timed for either 100 or 110 mph.

Class 357: This train is pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 75mph (even though the train can go at 100mph). This service operates all services on c2c except for these services[www.railforums.co.uk] which are operated by 12 car class 387s.

Class 360: This train is pathed as a Class 360 EMU timed for 100mph.

Class 365: ScotRail: Edinburgh to Glasgow diagrams are complicated and vary from day to day. It could be timed as a 380 or a 385, or even a class 170.

Great Northern: Only these services[www.railforums.co.uk] are operated by 365s. However, other services from Kings Cross to Cambridge, Peterborough and Kings Lynn may be operated as a 365 (although they are usually operated by a 387).

Class 373 and 374: This train is pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 186mph.

Class 375: This is pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 100mph. To distinguish between the 375, 377, 379 and 387, 375's are operated by SE, 377's by SE and SN, 379's are run by LE and 387s by GX and GN. SE 375s and 377s are indistinguishable, but 377s only tend to run on Victoria to Ashford International & Maidstone East services and any SE services to/from Blackfriars. GN services could be a 387 or a 365. Please see the 365 section.

Class 376: This is pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 90mph. Operated only be SE, there is no way to tell the 465, 466 and 376 apart. All 376 trains operate on routes where a 465/466 combo can operate. 466's don't tend to work without 465's except on services from Sheerness to Sittingbourne/Gillingham and Strood to Tonbridge services. 376's do not operate out of Victoria or on London to Gillingham/Ashford/Gravesend/Sevenoaks/Tunbridge Wells services. Only 465/9's (sometimes with a 466 as well) operate London to Tunbridge Wells/Ashford International/Maidstone services.

Class 377: See class 313, 321, 375, 442 and 455.

Class 378: This is pathed as a Class 375 timed for 75 mph.

Class 379: See class 375.

Class 387:

c2c: See Class 357.

Gatwick Express: All services operated by Gatwick Express are now 387s.

Great Northern: Could either be pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 100mph or a class 365 EMU timed for 100mph. Please see either the 365 or 375 sections.

Great Western Railway: See class 165. It could also be pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 90mph.

Class 380: This train is pathed as a Class 0 or 380 EMU timed for 100mph. Some services on the Lanark Branch and Inverclyde Line are timed as an EMU timed for 75mph. Please see the class 314 section. Edinburgh to Glasgow services could be timed as a 365, 380, 385 or 170, so imagination will have to be used for this route.

Class 385: This train is pathed as a class 385 EMU timed for 100mph. However, very few 385s are currently in service, meaning that it could also be a 170, 365 or 380 that operates the service.

Class 390: This is pathed as a Class 390 EMU timed for 125 mph max.

Class 395: This is pathed as a Class 395 EMU timed for 140mph max.

Class 444: This is pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 100mph. In order to distinguish the 444, 450 and 458 from each other (the 442's and 377's don't operate on the same lines), all services on the Weymouth line are 444's, those on the Lymington Branch, the Basingstoke/Alton to London stopping services, Hownslow Loop and Southampton to Portsmouth services are 450's and all Reading to London services are 458's. However, all Portsmouth Direct Line services could be either the 444 or the 450 and London to Windsor services could be either the 450 or 458 so some imagination will have to be used with these 2 routes!

Class 450: See class 444.

Class 455: This is pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 75mph. With SW, some services may have a 456 as well. With SN, some may be 377's. Sometimes, SN services pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 75mph that are not Driver Operated Only will be 377's but this is not the only case where they could be 377's instead of 455's. Again some imagination will have to be used.

Class 456: See 455.

Class 458: See 444.

Class 465: See 376.

Class 466: See 376.

Class 483: This is pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 45mph.

Class 507: This is pathed as an Electric Multiple Unit timed for 75mph. The 507 and 508 are the only 2 class' operated by ME and are not operated by any other TOC.

Class 508: See 507.

Class 700: All Thameslink services are now class 700s.
