Introduction
Sonic Origins is a new way to experience 4 of Sonic's original adventures on the Sega Genesis and Sega CD. While Anniversary Mode has made some big changes to make the playing experience better overall (such as widescreen), some people don't like how there isn't a way to select the levels you want to play.
But what if I told you, this is actually possible?
In this guide, I'll show you how to level select in each Sonic title from the collection
Sonic 1
Sonic 1: the game that started it all. If you press a button at the title screen, you'll only be greeted with the character selection.
What you may not know is that from this screen, there's a button combo you can use to find the level selection. Just use this:
Up - Down - Left - Right
You'll hear a ring collection sound. Now, press A (on gamepad) or an equivalent. You'll now be greeted with this screen:
This method works in all three modes of the game: Anniversary, Classic, and Mirror.
Now level select away!
This is useful if you want to get the Air Bubble achievement without having to play the rest of the game.
Sonic CD
Sonic CD is one of the easiest games from Sonic Origins to select a level in. No special input combinations are needed.
At the title screen, you'll see "GAME START". Press the right button once. Now it should say "TIME ATTACK".
This is where you'll want to go. Now you can play any level of the game you want!
Unfortunately, if you're looking to finish the entire game starting from a particular level, this method does not accomplish that. Upon completion of a Time Attack level, you return to the Time Attack screen.
Just as with Sonic 1, this method works in all 3 modes of the game: Anniversary, "Classic", and Mirror.
Sonic 2
Just like with Sonic 1, the level selection in Sonic 2 requires an input from the title screen.
From here, you'll want to use this button combo:
Up - Up - Up - Down - Down - Down - Left - Right - Left - Right
You'll hear a ring sound. Now press A (on gamepad) or an equivalent. You should now see this screen:
Enjoy playing any level from Sonic 2!
This method is useful if you want to get the Casino Night Zone jackpot achievement without having to play the previous levels.
As always, this should work in all 3 versions of the game: Anniversary, Classic, and Mirror.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Method 1)
Believe it or not, there are actually 2 different ways to level select in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. This first one is the normal method of level selection.
When you press the "1 PLAYER" option, you'll see this Data Select screen.
You can choose any level from here.
Keep in mind that you need to beat the game to have complete freedom with this method. It's also restricted to that one save file you beat the game on. Not to mention, you need to unlock The Doomsday Zone if you want that to show up as an option using this method.
Choosing a zone this way will take you to the first act. The second method lets you start from the second act in a zone if you'd like.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Method 2)
Now, here's a spicier way to level level in S3&K. Instead of going to the Data Select screen, press this button combination:
Up - Up - Down - Down - Up - Up - Up - Up
You'll hear a ring collection sound. Now, there's a new option called "SOUND TEST" underneath "COMPETITION". You have to scroll down to see it.
Now go here. You'll see this screen:
Unlike the previous level selection method for S3&K, this lets you choose which Act you want to play. Level select away!
Closing Remarks
You should now be able to level select to your heart's content!
