Quality Levels
In Russian Fishing 4 different quality levels are available. This quality level designation is provided with a "star rating". The star rating is the indicator of the quality of the components that are built into the reel or on the rod.
A 4 - 5 star reel has significantly better components than a 1 - 2 star reel. This rating has a strong influence on wear. A good quality rod will wear out more slowly and offer better lifting capacities and rings.
The same applies to the reels. Higher quality models are less affected by lines, have a more powerful mechanism and offer better oil, which means fewer repairs need to be done over time.
The Rod
The Blank
The rod blank is a component that cannot be repaired.
What causes wear?
The force exerted on the blank produces wear over time.
If the terminal tackle test of the rod is exceeded, the wear increases. Exceeding the test weight too much can lead to extreme blank wear, up to and including a break of the rod.
When fighting large, strong fish there will automatically be more wear.
Ratio of line / reel and load capacity of the rod : The closer your setup is to the max capacity of the rod, the more wear on the blank will be produced.
Locking the brake : Locking the brake can lead to a break of the rod if it is incorrectly assembled / used. If the line is under the load capacity of the rod, a break can be avoided.
Please note that mono and flouro lines have some 'stretch' in them. If they are close to the capacity of the rod, it is possible for them to 'stretch' long enough before breaking to pass that force to the rod or reel and cause a break.
Minimizing wear:
A balanced setup ensures a significantly longer gear life.
Never choose a line that is higher than the load-bearing capacity of the rod in order to avoid a break.
Correct usage of the gear in the fight also ensures a longer lifespan for the rod
The right area of application: Use the correct rods / setups for the species you are targeting. This will minimize wear and optimize efficiency.
The Rod Rings
The rings interact with the line. There are different versions of the quality levels. A high-quality rod such as the Legacy TI has titanium rings built into it. Titanium rings will hardly have any effect on the line even with a high level of wear of 40 - 60%. Cheap rod models can produce increased wear and tear on lines as early as 20%.
Braided lines have the greatest wear on rod rings, regardless of quality.
Spinning Reels And Baitcasters
Spinning Reels:
Mechanism:
The gear strength is weaker in relation to the "Classic Baitcaster".
The star rating is an indicator of a strong mechanism that withstands wear better..
The spool size controls the power of the gearbox:
There is no minimum casting weight, but smaller stationary reels continue to cast bait in their segment.
1000, 2000 reels are intended for ultra-light and light fishing with spinning and picker rods.
3000 - 4000 reel sizes for ML angling in spin fishing and for medium feeders.
6000 reels are intended for medium - heavy spin fishing and heavy feeders.
8000 - 10000 + reels are designed for very heavy fishing and carp angling.
Interactions in the gearbox:
The mechanism is the heart of the reel and in the spinning version is more in connection with the ball bearings and the lubrication. The less lubrication, the more it affects the gearbox and the ball bearing.
If the brake is used at maximum pressure during active drill, the mechanism is automatically more loaded. For example, if you use less braking power on a setting of 15/30, you reduce mechanism wear, but increase wear on the brake.
The Grease:
The lubrication does not wear out when casting. Every turn of the crank consumes oil. The retrieve itself influences the oil wear only indirectly through the rotations performed.
Baitcasters:
Mechanism:
The mechanism is more robust than the spinning version.
The type of reel influences the area of application and the specific features:
Low profile reels in our game are designed for ultra-light to ML fishing. If you exceed the cast weight of the reels too much, the ball bearings are heavily loaded and can be damaged.
The baitcasting reels have a wider range of uses, from ML to very heavy fishing. Reels like the ZM-4 and Steelness are designed for long casts, other models like the Centauri for very heavy fishing for catfish.
The conventional reels are primarily intended for heavy fishing. They are also the best choice for trolling. The transmission power of this reel stands out clearly and they are also more resistant to wear. There are also specific models that make it possible to change the gear ratio during the retrieve.
Interactions:
Since the winding happens here directly over the spool and the ball bearings connected to it, the effect of wear is different compared to the spinning reel. The baitcaster reels are more resilient due to this factor.
The casting distance is affected by the wear of the lubrication and the ball bearings.
If the brake is used at maximum pressure during active drill, the mechanism is automatically more loaded. For example, if you use less braking power on a setting of 15/30, you reduce mechanism wear, but increase wear on the brake.
The Grease:
Oil is used every time a cast is made, as there is a direct contact with the ball bearings.
Oil is also consumed here with every rotation, but the effect on the mechanism is less compared to spinning reels.
The Ball Bearings:
The casting distance is affected by the wear of the lubrication and the ball bearings.
The ball bearings also wear during casting.
Repairs And Replacments
Repair costs differ due to several factors, including quality of components and whether or not it is a replacement or a repair activity.
Rod rings: (Replaced: fixed price)
Each rod has different rings attached, so pay attention to the wear on the line to determine when you should replace the rings.
If the line wears out too quickly, you should replace the rings as a preventive measure.
Mechanism: (Repair: greater wear means greater price)
The mechanism is the most important element of every reel. The mechanisms on spinning reels should usually be repaired a little earlier than on baitcasting models, as these are relatively weaker. Please pay attention to the star quality rating and size of the reel.
The smaller the reel, the more frequently repairs are needed. Larger reels handle wear better than smaller reels.
The different types of line also have different effects on gear wear.
Braided line will produce the most wear and tear on any reel.
Fluorocarbon main line also has a higher wear than the monofilament line.
The monofilament main line produces the least amount of wear, but is not recommended for all types of fishing.
Spool: (Replaced: fixed price)
The spool is completely replaced and is one of the most expensive components. The percentage wear compared to the other components is low. Should you no longer achieve the desired casting distance, even though the ball bearings are freshly repaired, it might be time to replace the spool. This mainly applies to smaller reel models such as 1000 reel models or low-profile reels, which are intended for ultra-light fishing.
Friction Brake: (Replaced, fixed price)
The brake is responsible for limiting the amount of force applied to the line. The wear takes place here as soon as a fish hits the brake. Quality makes a difference; Zeiman, for example, offers good brake discs that last longer than a Sputnik brake. If you use a reel constantly on the maximum setting of 29/30, it is advisable to repair the brake at 15% wear. However, if you often fish with smaller leaders and lower settings such as 15/30, it is not necessary to replace the brakes that early.
Ball bearings: (Replaced: fixed price)
For low profile and baitcaster reels designed for long casts, 30% is a good approach. Here it depends on your area of application, as the throwing distance of the baitcaster reels is related to the ball bearing. In other areas of application, it is advisable not to exceed 50%. From this point on, the gearbox no longer runs completely smoothly and the ball bearing should be replaced.
IMPORTANT: Here, too, the quality level of the reel must be taken into account. Good components are more resilient.
Lubrication: (Replaced: fixed price)
There is no fixed norm there, as each reel has to be viewed individually. As a rule, it is advisable to replace the lubrication on a spinning reel if you notice significantly more influence on the gear wear. The influence of wear on the baitcaster reels is slightly less, but it has more of an effect on the ball bearings. With longer casting spools such as the low-profile reels, the ZM-4 and the Steelness, you may want to fill up the lubrication a little faster in order to produce less wear on the ball bearing, as this affects the casting distance.
However, it is not necessary to change the lubrication at 10-20%. Pay attention to the respective wear behavior and orient yourself accordingly.
IMPORTANT: Pay attention to which oil is used to repair the lubrication. Each manufacturer has its own oil. At the "Winding Rivulet" the "Express Fishing Oil" is primarily used, which is cheap but consumed more quickly. A good all-rounder solution is the Volkhov store. Also, there are special Zeiman and Beluga stores.
