Shump basics - For those that can't seem to pass the first mission

Shump Part (Dual Shock)

To kill:First: Hold R1 to shoot, and don't release it, NEVER.

Second: when an enemy appears, aproach them, and use Square to use melee attacks. DON'T EVER RELEASE R1!

Defense:Use Square Melee attacks to destroy enemy bullets.

To kill more:Use R2 not to evade, but to move faster from one side to another of the screen, or to approach the enemy and kill them using melee.

Follow this even on the Twin Stick shooter parts, you may consider dropping the melee on the side scroll parts though.

Shump Part (XInput)

To kill:First: Hold R to shoot, and don't release it, NEVER.

Defense:Use X Melee attacks to destroy enemy bullets.

To kill more:Use RT not to evade, but to move faster from one side to another of the screen, or to approach the enemy and kill them using melee.

Follow this even on the Twin Stick shooter parts, you may consider dropping the melee on the side scroll parts though.

On Foot

First, you have the auto-use item plugin setup, hence when you drop to critical HP, you will recover some HP, and tutorial gives you a good amount.

Second, pause the game and go to your Control settings, then you will find what each button do, and also learn the shortcuts for: Switching Weapon Set and using Item manually during battle. Switch Pod will only be useful if you get another one.

Now, here is the fun part: You can keep holding your shooting button just like the shump section, it's pretty much the same thing, just now you have combos, and may need to evade more.

Rest goes to your own ability, and if needed, use items, you have a lot for the simple tutorial level.

This Game Doesn't Save Automatically!

You see, everything in this game is part of the lore: The HUD, critical damage affecting your vision, even the Options Menu is related, and so is the Save function. You will get access to it after the first mission.
