The focus of the meta was all about disabling the opponent as much as you can and spamming anti-damage chips.

Independent from the mechanics outside the chips builds, the main rule is to try to have a consistent series of codes. In combat, especially in PVP, you would want to opt for combos as much as you can, which requires you to be able to select as much chips as you can.

Sadly, even with this goal, the games‘ chips were designed in a way that cripples your damage if you go for a singular code folder, with that said : You must aim to find a balance between combos, utility and damage.

Each iteration of the games came up with innovative chips and tools to aid you in combat, the first game was clunky as it began as a proof of concept. There are high and low tiers of chips, and the playstyles are few and far in between, ranging from poison stalling to going fist-to-fist with the opponent. With that said, I will cover first some basic things that the games do not explicitly teach you right away.

The way the games reward you with the weapons that you need provided you spend the proper effort(be it chips or navicust parts), anything post-game is PVP-heavy focused and farming all the necessary things for a good PVP setup may take some time, because not only you need the proper chips, but you also have to insure that they meet the criteria of having the proper codes.

Elementals

In the first 3 games, there were 4 elements to speak of: Fire, water, thunder and grass. A kid would quickly go for the basic assumption that the weakness chain should go as follows: Fire beats, grass, grass beats thunder, thunder beats water and water beats fire.

Upon hitting the enemy with its appropriate elemental weakness results in it taking double damage, starting from the 4th game, which is not part of this collection, a yellow speech bubble containing the exclamation mark would show up to indicate that they were hit with such attacks. However, there is more to that than the aforementioned chain.

Starting from the 2nd game, each element is coupled with some sub-advantages that allow them to strengthen themselves depending on some specific setups, with the introduction of elemental ground panel types.

Grass panels can heal grass type units when the latter steps on them, however, not only they disappear after having a fire attack going through them, but they also cause whoever is on these panels to receive double damage when they also receive the attack, making the damage 4 times more deadly to a grass type unit being placed on a grass panel. The same can be said for Elec units attacking a water unit while they step on an icy panel.

Water type units cannot slide on icy panels and fire units cannot suffer the consequences of stepping on a lava panel.

That’s not all though, the second game and the third game introduce style changing, a mechanic allowing megaman to gain an arbitrary element that he can equip to himself, with all the details I covered here, I need to add some notes in regards to the playstyle of each element :

Grass style players usually go for an aggressive yet safe playstyle, as the grass-type chips can attack without causing the opponent to go into a flinch state, they also pack some secondary effects like confusing the enemies or filling the field with grass panels. A combination of support and damage if you must say.

A water style focused folder usually comes up with having access to fast attacks with some wide area coverage, giving you the opportunity to attack from a distance. Just like the water style, fire style offers more hitbox yet trades speed for high damage.

Lastly, Elec style combat focuses more on dealing less damage and locking the opponent in place, their chips usually do not cover much space and require good timing and positioning.

I am not going to speak much about the utility aspect of the chips, the attributes part of the game is not that flashy and worth considering in my guide unless I get some ideas, because speaking about them is not going to present you with anything of use until the 4th game despite their interesting nature.

The following table should sum up everything I said. Use the following information to your advantage to aid your style's adaptation.

Style change

Starting from the second game, megaman gains the ability to change its core element and armor.

Aiming to obtain one can be tedious, as there are no ways to officially be able to tell your progression. I will cover them more in their respective games' section.

Custom parts

Starting from the third game came one of my favourite mechanics up to this very date. Fun fact: The way this mechanic works was patented by capcom and no other game uses it as far as I know.

The bigger question here is: how much does cust program setup change in your gameplay?

I would say a whole lot only if you aim to run something that supports your folder than your character, but hey, any ideas are welcome. BN3 however might be the last game where you can go nuts with the navicust parts, because it has the mod tools, and as far as I know people abuse these as they open up more out of the box options.

The general gimmick is that the bigger a part is, the more efficient it is, and this is of course not true for all the parts. With that Said, I have built this Tier list chart which should assist you with what I believe is the best, again, if you want to build your own set, go for it, I encourage you to be more creative with both the navicust and the folder builds. My tier list will be structured in a way that showcases the parts based on flexibility within the grid and the importance of their utility in battle.

Usually you’d want to have some tankiness to work with, Because I like to run parts that allow me to chain more chip combos, I usually ditch the buster support parts, though I have seen people go for some of these, mainly the ones increasing the buster damage. Quite understandable because you can’t relay always on your folder, who knows if your opponent counters all your chips, huh ?

In this game, there is not much to discuss here in terms of building your character. The game started as a proof of concepts, you are limited to editing your folder and the armor.

The quality of a folder in this game is defined as follows:

The folder should have a consistent set of chips, a maximum of 3 common chip codes is what you should not exceed, else you will have trouble enabling combos in each turn.

Your chips choice should cover high damage, wide hitbox and should provide you with utility that aids your style

The first game had an exclusive mechanic that was altered then completely removed from the rest of the franchise: upsizing the amount of chips that you can choose from in a given turn after choosing the "Add" function in the custom screen up to 3 times. The effect of this buff ends upon choosing any given chip.

Now let's discuss the folder proprities in this section. In the first game, your folder restricts you to owning no more than 10 of the same chip (independent of its code). A second restriction goes for the navi chips, including the event exclusive Bass chip, as you can only have 5 of these within the folder.

Now here is a rookie mistake that people often do when making a build for their folder: they refuse to include some chips because of their low level, AKA not wanting to have Lockon3 instead of Lockon2. Quick spoiler to help you open up but Lockon2 is superior than 3 in some specific folders thanks to its access H code, which is exclusive to the 2nd and allows you to pick more stronger chips in conjunction with it, I will reveal these later… Again: unless you run a folder that contains flexible chips with a specific set of letters, then go for Lockon3

There is another mechanic that I have not spoken about it: Program advance. First I thought it was cool after watching the anime, but the I was then disappointed by the fact that this mechanic isn't something you want to rely on in the first game for 2 reasons:

The program advances are not that good other than a few

The program advances use chip combinations that you would rather use them raw without combining them, either that or the said chips are just bad

Now, here is the question: what chips to choose ?

Other than the general rule, we've got some caveats to abuse in this game:

- The first game did not have a non-dimming screen counter yet: This only matters in PVP. Non-dimming chips are chips that freeze the screen for few seconds while enabling their effects, most of them are navi chips and countering these by timing was not introduced until the 4th game. And because your folder restricts you to having 5 Mega chips, You better enjoy having 5 Shadoman chips if you run a S folder, which is by the way a strong code.

- Have at least some form of recovery and defense: The folder contains 30 chips, that is a minimum of 6 turns if you manage to pick up all the chips in each turn and eventually you might need something to back yourself up, I would say 5 defensive chips should do it. Since your HP recovers after each battle.

-Equip one of the given armors you receive: Prior to a PVP fight, an armor might be super important as it cuts in half the damage that you receive despite the 1 weakness that you have. So unless your opponent knows exactly which armor you have, you might want to savour some good defenses, it's like doubling your HP.

I will sort list here every chip that is compatible with a code so that you can easily choose your code yourself.

Just by looking at the size of each collumn x line, you can see that some chip codes aren't quite good, like the obvious W letter, containing only 3 chips even though I can't deny how strong the woodman chip is, but size doesn't always matter.

Please comment what your favourite codes are. From my end however I recommend: C, E, G, K, L, M, N, as their chips contain some good coverage in both offense and defense.

In terms of PVP however, I see lots of anubis spammers, one can argue that the A code is superior, but hey! If you think something works for you, if you like it and comfy with it, then go for it then! These are just suggestions in the end. Of course you wouldn't be accepting to have the escape chip in your folder for instance.

Battle Network 2 - Part 1

Capcom had to balance many chips and tools after the first game, so what's new ?

Style change, new chips, no more elemental armors, no more free HP recovery after each fight...etc..

The major changes to the folder building are as follows: Your folder can only contain 5 copies of the same chip

A new propriety has been added to the folder pack, you can now select a specific chip to appear always at the start of a battle, provided Mega man has enough memory for it, something that you can slowly upgrade throughout the game.

A new asterisk code was added to the series, these codes are compatible with all the chips unless you are attempting to build a program advance combo.

Speaking of program advance, new combos were created, but almost half of them are not worth it.

I don't have much to speak off in terms of style change in this game unlike the third game, because in the second, after acquiring a style, your folder building does not get much influence unless you go for Elec or grass style.

Since the styles here do not achieve any synergy with the folder as of this game, you might want to go for the G and B as they offer you access to some great chips like gate, still even after choosing a folder type, you might as well throw some asterisk chips as they allow for more options in conjunction of what you have in your folder; Areagrab is a good chip to have as it helps you manage your space and if you are a big fan of prism shenanigans, go for it too!

Overall, I could not find any footage of BN2 tournaments and as far as I could find, the BN2 PVP folder had lots of anti damaging chips and poison spamming.

Battle Network 3

New game, new mechanics, buffs, nerfs...etc..

Battle network 3 came up with various changes that will reshape the meta.

Before I tackle the new styles, I wish to go through the navi cust side of this game.

As I said earlier, setting up a good navi customizer plays a huge role in your gameplay, if you plan to go full serious, consider abusing the mod codes, a mechanic introduced and stuck in the third game that gives you some free additions.

While I can not easily allow you to plan how to make a good setup, I will instead name what I think are bad cust parts in the following table.

Allow me to comment on some of these choices:

Dark licence allows you to boot up a dark chip without needing a hole, In this game, there are only 4 dark chips to speak of, 2 for each version. Though their damage and utility speak for themselves, the fact that the part's size takes a huge chunk of the setup does not make up for it to substitute a chip in my opinion.

HP+500: The part is too big and with the mod codes, I think you can achieve a bug free setup that does not match the value yet offers you +300 HP.

BrakBust and BrakChrg both counter shielded units, these are a few and it's not pvp viable.

Unless you do not aim to boost your buster and have a free cell or two, there is already a very small cust part that maxes out your buster, look up BSTRMAX.

FstGauge is very situational, through out my experience I could only benefit from it when I am going full tanky and trying to stall out the enemies, unless I am on a PVE run.

Overall, starting from the third game, the amount of possible (good) builds that you can achieve gets even more vaster.
