They can be used to purchase things like characters, karts and gliders in the Mario Kart Tour shop. Characters, karts and gliders don't come at a cheap cost — a character like Koopa Troopa costs 800 coins.

If you're in need of extra coins to purchase a Daily Select character like Koopa Troopa, you can race on the game's courses and collect coins as you play. That will only get you a handful of coins at a time, though. If you're after a gold mine, head to Coin Rush.

How To Play Coin Rush

Coin Rush is a special mode in Mario Kart Tour that sees you play as Gold Mario while racing through a course covered in gold coins. To play Coin Rush, you need to select the plus button next to your gold coin total at the top of the screen.

When you hit that, you'll be brought to a screen that looks like this:

At this screen, it will be up to you to decide on the multiplier you wish to have applied to your total gold coin count upon completing a round of Coin Rush. If you select the five ruby option, you'll receive a multiplier of two and so on.

After this, you'll be thrown into a Coin Rush. This mode plays out on the New York course and it sees you, Gold Mario, racing through to collect as many gold coins as possible. Because you're Gold Mario, you don't actually need to drive through a gold coin — if you just go near one, Gold Mario will automatically pull it in for you to collect.

We recommend remaining as close as possible to the center of the course's lane as this will maximize the coins Gold Mario is able to pull in from both the left and right side of the track.

Once you finish a single lap on the course, you'll be shown a grand total for your coins. This amount will be multiplied based on the multiplier you paid for using rubies and that final amount will be the number of coins added to your inventory.
