Introduction
Greetings and welcome to the first thoughtful guide on efficient city management. The aim of this guide is to provide a general overview for one of the most effective strategies on building your kingdom in this game.
Overall Theme Of Efficient City Building
One efficient way to build an effective kingdom is to build it around the idea of either having seperate, but connected city states or distinct districts that compose your city. There are many different ways to approach building your kingdom, but this is the way to not only properly defend yourself, but to also increase your gains and profits beyond what can typically be had. The main objective is to play smart and plan for the long run, willingly taking a few hits here and there in order to achieve the most lucrative of achievements.
The Common Foe
Your first thought might be that the endless dragons and viking hoards would be the main problem, but like so many other resource management sims, the real enemy is health, wealth, and happiness. the easiest way to overcome these odds is to contain them, with each resource in your district.
Constructing The Balanced District
When starting out your kingdom one of the safest routes is to try to establish your keep as close to the center of the map as possible while also accounting for as many natural resources such as fertile ground, forests, and ores/quarries. After you have successfully gotten comfortable with your surroundings (about 50-70 pop), the best step to make is to create neighborhood blocks in order to give your starting district form and giving it the space it needs to expand.
Once you have successfully established a neighborhood, it is wise to start setting up as many defenses as possible for when you reach 100 population (Vikings and Dragons). the best early defensive structures are defensive towers. Build them as high a you can (3 walls high) and attach any turret you wish to it. Usually, it is best to account for the walls you want to place around your district and go ahead and place these defensive towers around the desired layout. This will future proof your defenses as you can easily build walls alongside these towers later on and gain more defense. this will easily help with the vikings, but to prevent dragon attacks, it is best to make these defensive towers spread throughout each block in order to either kill or drive away dragons before they torch your property. In order to future-proof your district, arranging almost every single building in the town and food sections is eventually necessary.
The Key To Success
In every one of your districts, it is very important to have certain structures so that your peasants aren't starving or dying from the plague. As you grow, if these needs are not met, you can face serious consequences. I had 60 peasants leave/die every single year while I was figuring it out. Around your housing district, it is crucial to have a market so that the heads of the households have easy access to food. Another important building is the granary. In every district, you will want to have food grown and stored there, so that peasants don't have to walk so far to bring food to the market/home. The longer it takes, the less food there is to go around. Having a hospital is one of the most crucial buildings towards the 500 pop mark. The Bakery is a nice addition, if you have the space for it. It acts as another source of food, usually helping to stave off hunger in a district if a bad winter occurs. Having a Tavern, Church, and Library is not entirely necessary until you start filling up a huge district space. Once room becomes limited, squeezing these in for some quick boostage really takes the edge off. At this point, you will start facing 100-200 of your pop becoming infected, which if there is no doctor close enough to them, means that it can effectively kill off your resource production. if you don't have enough resources yet, or really don't care, festivals are a simple solution, but you usually encounter diminishing returns with this method. Another important structure would be the treasury. Since you can build more than one, it is really helpful to build one in every district that you make. This way you can fund your growing army, turrets, and when you decide to reclaim the sea for building.
Example Districts
My Keep District (Starting)
My Food production District (Experimental)
My Second Major District
My Third Major District
My Docks District (For Upcoming Update)
My No Man's Land (Controlled Viking Killing Field)
Defense
Defense is really simple in this game, as long as you plan accordingly and have a vision for the future. I found that having a central choke point in the game for vikings is the easiest way to contain that threat. The road to this state of defense is a very long road (it took me until year 475), but very worth it in the end. This is really an end game startegy, but its something to look toward. As you create each district, scattered, defense towers are the way to drive dragons away or kill them efficiently. In order to properly defend your kingdom and district, it is vital to create as many walls as possible. Usually all it takes is a long stretch of one layer castle walls along an entire landmass to drive the vikings to where you choose. One of the best strategies is to line your walls with turrets so that the viking wardhips are constantly taking damage to the point of killing off entire ships before they even land. As long as you control where they can land, you're home free. Once you create a "no man's land", where the vikings land every single time, you can concentrate on building the biggest walls with as many turrets as you please to tear through the viking hoards. To ensure that the vikings land there almost every single time, place some farms and foresters around it to entice the raiders. As long as it's the only unwalled section of your kingdom with enticing resource production, then you should have no problem smiting the hoards within a minute of them landing.
