Before The Fight
There are a few things you should have first before attempting the fight. Namely, Mime and Knights of the Round. This is in addition to Omnislash, W-Summon, and the Ultima Weapon, as you need these three things to simply participate in the Special Battle. The first two of the necessary items are found at the Battle Square and require 32,000 and 64,000 Battle Points to purchase, if you are doing this on Disc 2 or Disc 3. They cost about double that price if you try to do it on Disc 1.
So it's best to wait until Disc 2 or Disc 3, given that your characters will be higher level and have stronger weapons, armor and materia at their disposal. If you are unsure how to participate in the Battle Square fights, there are other guides posted that break down how to get started, and how to win the fights without too much difficulty. The biggest obstacle comes from: Not being able to leave the Room with the Fight Attendant and the Prize Redemption boxes, Potentially running out of GP to participate in fights, and, Getting a string of really bad handicaps during the fight. A good way to ensure you have enough GP is to trade Gil for GP with the man inside the shack that is next to the Save Point located across from the ferry to the Gold Saucer. You can obtain up to 100 GP at a time, and if you used the built-in booster
If you're unsure how to obtain Mime and Knights of the Round, there are guides that list where they are located (Materia Caves throughout the world), and how to get them (Gold Chocobo is the end all, be all, solution). Once you have all of the items, limit breaks, and materia listed above, head on over to Golden Saucer and speak to the attendant at the desk. She'll say something about how strong you are, and ask if you want to fight in the 'special battle for the toughest fighters' or something like that. Agree, and then Cloud will head into the Arena.
The Fight
As Cloud is the only person who can participate in this fight, make sure he has the good materia and armor. If you stole a Ziedrich from Rude at some point, equip him with that. It has very strong defensive stats, and reduces all elemental damage by half. I personally did this with Cloud wearing a Mystile, as I forgot to equip the Ziedrich before starting. I know what you're thinking: "How on earth am I going to win this fight with only eight materia slots?" Well, it turns out you only need eight, at most, to really succeed here. However, I made it through the 8 rounds of fighting without any real trouble. I equipped Cloud with a Ribbon to guard against silence, poison, berserk, and other unpleasant things. (Side Note: Of course I lost the Ribbon from the handicap wheel within the first three spins, but managed to power through regardless.)
Once the fight starts, you can fight against the enemies however you wish, but I found it very helpful to combine Mime with other strong, one-to-two shot materia uses. For example, Shadow Flare or Knights of the Round. You don't pay the MP cost for a materia use when you activate it thanks to Mime, and Mime carries over into the next round. So, if you wanted to, and you did not lose either your Summon or your Command materia, you could use Knights of the Round against the first enemy and then have Cloud use Mime on himself, and you'll cast Free KOTR all the way to an easy (if lengthy due to the animation for KOTR) victory, and be the proud owner of a new, shiny materia called Final Attack.
Other Comments And Concerns
In case you're wondering: "Why do I need Final Attack?", the answer is simple. Final Attack exists to use whatever Materia is paired with it, whenever its holder dies. So in the event of a TPK (Total Party Kill), it is best to have Phoenix paired with Final Attack. Phoenix not only deals Fire damage against all opponents, it also revives all party members. So instead of facing Game Over and having to pick up from your last save, you get another shot at taking out whatever it is you're fighting. (Very, very useful for the fights against Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon, and both Sephiroth battles in the Northern Crater.)
The strategy I've laid out is reliant on two things happening: Not losing your Command Materia, and, Not losing your Summon Materia. If these happen, you'd have to rely on other means to power through the fight. And if you lose, then you'd need to start all over again. However, sometimes you get really bad luck and the handicap wheels cripple you in essentially every way it possibly can. That's part of life, and the best way to counter this is to have plenty of GP saved up. You can do this by either racing Chocobos and choosing to get GP instead of your items, as most of the item rewards aren't really all that special to begin with, or you can speak to the man in the shack and give him Gil for GP. Even with terrible luck, you shouldn't need more than 4-6 tries to beat the entire Special Fight.
The materia Cloud had on during my successful fight (which was my first attempt, I might add), included: Double-Cut, Mime, KOTR, Enemy Skill (with important items such as White Wind, Big Guard, Shadow Flare and more) Restore (with Cure 3 and Regen, Regen works great here), Contain (all skills unlocked), Alexander, Bahamut Zero, and a few other Summon materia, and a HP Plus.
However, if you opt to use the Ziedrich for the extremely good defensive stats, you'd be limited to the eight materia slots on the Ultima Weapon. So, I would recommend Mime, KOTR, Enemy Skill, HP Plus, Double Cut, Contain, Restore, and then one other Summon Materia of your choosing. If you opt to have W-Summon as well, I'd recommend removing Double Cut, as you only have 2x-Cut more than likely, unless you have been seriously farming for AP, and the single extra attack is the most expendable.
Thanks For Reading!
I appreciate any comments or feedback, and I hope this guide helped you to quickly and easily acquire Final Attack.
