Guide to raising (and maintaining) threat level

Threat Level Basics

Threat Level is the number in the circle at the left of the the bottom purple XP bar under the skills bars.

Threat Level is increased every 700 XP stored in the XP bar.

XP stored in the purple bar is earned by killing infecteds and from looting XP from containers/loot bags.

XP from quests seem to be directly awarded to the player, not stored in the purple bar.

Threat Level is max capped at 20.

Threat Level and XP stored is lost on death.

On Threat Level 5+ grants "One foot in the grave" debuff.

Every Threat Level grants:

5% bonus XP received

Increases damage taken

10% Hunger/Thirst increase

Number of items in containers increase.

Increased infected's aggro

Method To Maintaining Threat Level

Simply don't rest at player made campfires, campfire at spawn, or at your camp's bed. These will cash in your stored XP, thus reseting your threat level.

Instead craft a BASIC Fire starter, then find a campfire in the map that's not in spawn and use the basic fire starter to regain rest. DO NOT add fuel to the campfire, as this will cause your stored XP to be cashed in.

Using this method will allow you to regain about 50 rest points, which you can use to directly drink/eat from inventory to recover hunger and thrist. You may need to rest again after eating/drinking, so I recommend carrying wood resource around to craft the basic fire starters on demand. However, eating/drinking straight from the inventory might not grant the food/drink buffs...

It's recommended to rest fully and max hunger and thirst before attempting to grind threat level.
