Intro
In this guide i will share some info about the default map generator in 7d2d (A21.1) and how to build your next favourite map.
The programs you need are:
• 7d2d
• net paint/GIMP or any other program like that (if you want to add burned biom)
Most screenshots during the guide are in english, some examples at the end are in german, but i think it's also clear for non-germans as the order of the settings is the same.
Info About The Settings
None of this is "official" afaik, but it's multiple times tested.
The basic settings like towns, rivers and so on affect each other just minimal.
In A20 many lakes actively reduced the amount/size of cities. In A21 not anymore
The lakes slider only affects large lakes as important part of the landscape, not small lakes as part of the outer regions in some towns.
The preview quality should be set to low or lower for world sizes of 8192 or more.
Heavily depending on your system of course
Plains and Hills affect the towns just minimal, there is a difference between 30%/50%/20% (Plains, Hills, Mountains) and 50%/30%/20%, but there is no general rule like: plains>hills → more towns
Mountains strongly affect the amount of towns (mountains < 20% → many towns)
The biomtypes have no effect on the world, just the amount of bioms
e.g. a 100% snow biom map will be the same as a 100% wasteland biom map with everything else equal (except that its snow ;-)
The biompercentages affect the terrain and the towns.
A 25/25/25/25 map has other towns & mountains as a 40/20/20/20 map
A map with 50/0/50/0 has same terrain and towns as a 0/50/0/50 map
The Seed defines the boundary of the map. E.g. Water NorthEast, Mountain SouthWest
I recommend to open your taskmanager while generating random maps as the used memory increases for every map you build (esp. large maps >8k) and the more you create the more likely 7d2d crashes
Optimize Bioms (& Add Burned Biom)
After the finished generation of a map open the folder of the map here:
C:\Users\"YOURUSER"\AppData\Roaming\7DaysToDie\GeneratedWorlds\
Here you find the:
biomes.png
NOTE: If you can't find this folder maybe you have to set your viewsetting in windows to show your hidden folders. AppData might be hidden.
• Make a backup of this biomes.png.
• Open it with paint net (https://www.getpaint.net/) or any other image editor program (e.g. GIMP), windows paint will work only for small maps <4k.
It could look like this:
• Use a brush or tool of your choice to change the bioms png.
The colors you choose set the bioms
• The values you need for the bioms:
IMPORTANT: Only these values are allowed, some programs might start with a hardness of <100% and mix the old and new color. That's not working. Only these 5 colors are allowed.
The burned biom is 100% working on every map i tried. It's not semi burned or whatever, it's like the navezgane burned.
• You can mix these 5 colors/bioms as much as you want.
The adjusted biomes.png could look like:
Create Your Perfect RG Map
For your perfect random generated map experience i recommend the following steps:
Set the settings
Towns, Wilderness POI's, Rivers, Craters, Cracks, Lakes.
I often use "many" for all of them
Set Plains/Hills/Mountains.
I often use values around 20% Plains, 60% Hills, 20% Mountains
Use only 1 or 2 different bioms, e.g. 100% forest, or 50% Snow / 50% Desert
A random world seed, world size how you like, and preview quality low or lowest
Start the world generation and wait to finish
If you don't like the amount or layout of mountains/towns/water repeat with a different seed or change 1 ↔ 2 biomes. The seed define the boundary of the map, so if you like the boundary, e.g. all sides water, don't change the seed, but the amount of bioms, or change the hill/mountain/plains slider
After the generation make a screenshot of the map (Steam F12)
Follow the steps in the "optimize biom" section. Use the information of your screenshot to set the bioms where you want them. E.g. snow where mountains are, no desert close the ocean, no big cities in the wasteland, you wont hit everything to 100% but the general setting will work very good with a few minutes of work
Replace the old biomes.png with your new adjusted one
Start a new game using the name of the new generated and adjusted map, e.g. Old Apada Valley
Examples (Seeds/Configs)
Now a few examples for Seeds and configs.
