V Rising The Waiting Game - A V Rising Short Story

THE WAITING GAME :

NOTE : This is not a vampire story. This is a short story I wrote while waiting for V Rising to come out of early access, based on real life and the events leading up to its release date.

THE WAITING GAME

The year is 2032. The world we once have known no longer exists. After the Great War, the last war, we were forced underground where the dangerous nuclear fallout couldn't reach us. And where they can't find us. There was no warning. That came after they were safe in their bunkers. The power grids were destroyed. They blamed it on war. But all it really was is depopulation and resources for their own greed.

The rich elite and aliens live a life of luxury on space ships and deep underground military bases. They are trying to annihilate the survivors they find remaining on the surface. If radiation and disease don't get to them first.

We have found new ways to survive. It's amazing what lack of clean air, water, nutritious food and sunlight we once took for granted can do to a person. We've turned to animal-like instincts. We eat unspeakable things no one ever once considered sticking in their mouths. Are now delicacies.

We dug out massive caves, caverns and tunnels. Many of the remaining human population have gone blind for being in the dark for far too long. Some are born blind. Aura, the great underground human city where many have long traveled to seek shelter and make a new home, is the last of its kind.

There's Leoric, over by the waterfall gathering water. He's always trying to bring me things he finds. Fresh beetles, grubs, spiders, worms and dried roots to eat. That poor boy is always willing to do anything and everything to try to win my heart. He is kinda handsome but very clumsy. A lot Aura's residents believe him to be the most mentally ill in the city. I stand my ground to protect him. Calling out anyone who labels him so. Maybe that's why he grew fond of me.

Here we managed to find scrap that remained buried in the dirt from centuries ago. We make use of everything we can find. Sigrid, our engineer, managed to generate power briefly through old bicycle parts, car batteries, scrap motors, diodes and power inverters. All found within the soil. Wars have been fought among our own kind for such parts. To generate power. To generate light. Turning human energy into electricity.

There's a meeting tonight in the great cavern center. Words of great news. The time is soon. I shall get ready and gather my things.

Tremendous news has been delivered. My hands are shaking as I'm writing this. I have to stop to take deep breathes. The meeting started off as usual. Everyone gathered and took their seats. Leoric asked to sit next to me. The lights came on and our governor began to speak. Current population, food rations and scrap findings. News of what's happening on the surface. How many of our own were killed in the fight for the cost of life, freedom and honor.

The lights got dim as the governor powered up the last of few computers known to humankind. V-Rising is out of early access, he shouted, as his voice could be heard echoing throughout the connecting tunnels. Everyone jumped up, raising their fists in the air, cheering. You would have thought the war was over. Afterwards, there was a celebratory festival with a great feast. The ground has never shook this much since the nukes first touched down.

The city took turns playing V-Rising and powering the bikes. I've never seen so many smiling faces. For once in our lives, we have felt so much joy as if our current situation dissipated before our eyes. Maybe it's the dried root mead talking or the great news, but I may ask Leoric to marry me.

- The title is a play on words. Pun intended.

- I originally posted this in the Dev Update #21: The Next Chapter.

- The short story initially started out as a few paragraphs and was a joke, but then I kept adding to it.
