Reduce Blurriness

Why Is This Game So Blurry?

Unlike WHII this game defaults to Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) to reduce the jagged effects you see on edges of objects in any game. You can read up about this here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_anti-aliasing

What is actually a good thing, leads to a very blurry overall image that can be perceived as annyoing. We can however fix that issue to some extent. Pick one of the solutions I am giving here, according to your taste.

Solution 1: Clear - Turn Off Anti-Aliasing

The simplest solution to this issue is to turn off Anti-Aliasing completely. This immediately clears up the image. However, it leaves you with jagged edges, as mentioned before. Some players like the look of that, because it reminds them of the olden times, when games looked a lot rougher.

Inside of Warhammer III go to -> (screen symbol) -> . Open the drop down menu next to and choose . the changes and you are done.

You have to decide for yourself whether you want it this way or not. If not, take a look at the next solution.

Solution 2: Halfway Blurry - FXAA

Maybe you are okay with some blurriness, because you think it looks cool to have a somewhat softer overall image. In this case the game has got you covered as well. For this we are using Fast approximate Anti-Aliasing () instead of TAA. Link for upcoming nerds: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_approximate_anti-aliasing

Inside of Warhammer III go to -> (screen symbol) -> . Open the drop down menu next to and choose . the changes and you are done.

will also reduce the overall brightnes of the image by a slight amount, because it tends to "fill up" jagged edges with dark pixels. It DOES blurr, albeit not nearly as much as TAA. Again, you have to decide for yourself whether this suits your taste. If not, take a look at the next solution.

Solution 3: Clean It Up - Reshade

Now that FXAA took care of those pesky jaggies, we still want a crisp overal picture, right? Enter Reshade ... Reshade is a shader suite that injects post processing effects into almost any game. Sounds dangerous? It isn't ... It's safe and usable by AMD as well as NVIDIA owners. If you want to know more, please check the official site under https://reshade.me/ .

InstallationStep 1:

Download the latest version (found on the bottom of the official page) and double click on the setup file. The installer will search for games it knows, and show you a list of those it found on your system. If you scroll down, you should find an entry for Total War: WARHAMMER 3 Click on it, then on "Next".

Step 2:

The app will now ask what kind of graphics API the game is using. Here you choose DirectX 10/11/12 and click on "Next".

Step 3:

Now the program wants you to select a preset to install from. That is not important for our current purposes. So, just hit "Next" again.

Step 4:

The app then wants you to select the effect packages. For the purpose of this tutorial and simplicity's sake set a check mark next to the entry "SweetFX by CeeJay.dk". Note: It has to be a CHECK MARK, not a rectangle! Hit "Next" when you are done.

The app will now install reshade and tell you when it is done. You can then close the window and start the game.

ConfigurationThe first thing you will notice when you start the game is a new overlay at the top of your screen, telling you that Reshade is now usable. Hit the key the overlay is showing you to open up the configuration. You might have to wait until you are in the main menu of the game for this to work.

Reshade will present you with a tutorial. If you want to understand the program, feel free to go through said tutorial, otherwise just hit "Skip". Under the Home tab you will see a list of shaders to choose from. Set a check mark next to "LumaSharpen" and "AMD FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening".

And that's basically it ... You are set and can close the overlay, with the same button you opened it with. If you want to fine-tune it a bit, though, uncheck the option "Performance Mode", lower right hand side, which will open up a new section down there. Scroll to "LumaSharpen.fx" and look at the line "Sharpening strength". I recommend setting this to 0.750 or 0.800 to get an even better result. Do not overdo it though, because any sharpening puts strain on your eyes. You have been warned! :D

Do not forget to activate the performance mode again, afterwards!

Bonus Tip:

Deactivate the game's own sharpening in the advanced graphics settings, to get a better result. This option applies sharpening as well, but does so in a very crude fashion. Reshade's methods are much better. Feel free to also experiment with other shaders to tune the overall image to your liking. You could for example enable HDR (FakeHDR.fx) to clean up a bit of the fog. I recommend setting the "Power" to a moderate value like 1.100, though.

Also there is an option to use SMAA, which is a much better Anti-Aliasing method than FXAA. Try to turn off all sharpening, plus the FXAA in the game's advanced setting. Then use Reshade's SMAA. You will eliminate jaggies and keep a clean overall image. However, since Reshade does not know what is in-game graphics and what is UI, it will apply the Anti-Aliasing to everything, which results in blurrier fonts. You could alleviate that with one of Reshade's sharpening methods again, though ... Try it out, experiment!
