How to Cavalry - Medieval Total War 2

Heavie Cavalry And What To Do Against....

Against Infantry: Charge. Only this. All Infantry types are weak against Heavy Cavalry. Charge, then order your Cavalry to move away from the enemy's infantry. Then charge again. Repeat until your enemy's unit routs.

Against Spearmen: Avoid attacking the from the front. Try to distract the enemy unit by attacking it with another unit (ex.: Heavy Infantry). While the enemy unit is fighting charge from behind. They will rout immediately if they are weak. Repeat until the enemies rout.

Against Pikemen: Same as the Spearmen. They are very slow, so sometimes you dont have to distract them. Always charge from behind. Repeat until the enemies rout. NOTE: Don't ever try to attack from the front unless you hate your cavalry.

Against Archers: Charge. They often rout immediately. Don't be afraid of their arrows.

Longbowmen place pikes in front of them, so avoid this trap. Repeat until they rout.

Against Crossbowmen: Charge. They are a bit more powerful than Archers. You might need to distract them because their crossbows are effective. Repeat until they rout.

Against Halberd Bearers: Same as Pikemen and Spearmen. They are slow but distraction will be needed. Charge from behind. Repeat until they rout.

Against Light Cavalry: They are generally weak against Heavy Cavalry, but they are a bit tricky. First of all try to distract them with a unit of Spearmen or Pikemen. You don't won't them to run because they are fast and you will not be able to catch them. Charge from wherever you want unless they are charging at you. In that case avoid them charge from behind, it's safer. Repeat until they rout.

Against Heavy Cavalry: This is a tough one. They have the same speed as you and they are almost as powerful as you. Try to distract them with strong Spearmen or Pikemen accompanied by Light Cavalry. Charge from wherever you want unless they are charging at you. In that case avoid them charge from behind, it's safer. Repeat until they rout.

Against Mounted Archers: They are tough. They are a lot faster than you and they can shoot you while they run. Use Light Cavalry to lead them towards you. Charge from wherever you want. It's not nessesary to turn back after each charge but that way you will lose some men. If they are powerful like the Mongol Heavy Mounted Archers you should treat them like Heavy Cavalry. This means that you will have to turn back after each charge, otherwise your unit will rout.

Tip: Charging is not the only option. Heavy Cavalry can win some missle units in a melee fight. It takes longer, but it's effective.

Lite Cavalry And What To Do Against...

Against Light Infantry: Light infantry can be easily defeated, so charge. Turn back and charge again. Repeat until the enemies rout.

Against Heavy Infantry: Charge from behind, then turn back and charge again. Try distracting the enemy. Do not attack heavy infantry with Light Cavalry often, unless you want to lose more men. Better hunt Heavy infantry units while the are routing.

Against Spearmen: This is a bit tricky. Try attacking them from behind. You wont need to distract them because you're a lot faster than them, but be careful because Spearmen are good against cavalry. If the enemies are well equiped and trained, do not attack them. It's a waste of time. Repeat until they rout.

Against Pikemen: They are too hard to defeat with Light Cavalry, so you should avoid them. But if you have to attack them it is best to do it with two Light Cavalry units. One should charge from the left and the other from the right. Order your soldiers to turn back, then charge again. Do not expect to cause much damage, though.

Against Archers: Charge. They will rout almost immediately. Some Archers are more powerful than othes, so you will have to turn back after each charge. Longbowmen place pikes in front of them, so you will have to avoid this trap. Distract them in order to avoid their arrows. Repeat until they rout.

Against Crossbowmen: Charge, then turn back and charge again. Their crossbows can kill many of your men so distract them. Repeat until they rout.

Against Halberd Beares: They should be dealt like Pikemen. They are waeker, so by attacking them them you can cause a lot of damage. Repeat until they rout.

Against Light Cavalry: They are as tough and fast as you. Distract them with some Spearmen and then charge. Turn back and charge again. Remember to always charge fom behind and to avoid them if they are charging at you. Repeat until they rout.

Against Heavy Cavalry: It's really hard to make them rout. Always avoid them. They can easily defeat you so if they are charging at you run. Don't worry you're faster than them. You can always distract them to help another unit like Spearmen.

Against Mounted Archers: They are sometimes faster, but they are weak. Charge but try to distract them because they can fire at you while they run. Turn back after each charge. Avoid units like Mongol Heavy Mounted Archers.Repeat until they rout.

Tip: Light Cavalry is mostly used to chase down weak or routing units. They are better used as supporting units and they are effective.

Shootie Cavalry And What To Do Against...

Against Light Infantry: Fire at them. Their armor, if they have any, is useless against your arrows. Missle Cavalry units can easily beat a lot of Light Infantry units in a melee fight, too. Repeat until they rout.

Against Heavy Infantry: Firing them is effective only for well trained Missle Cavalry. You can charge at them from behind, but don't expect to deal a lot of damage. It's dangerous to have a melee fight with them, so avoid this.

Against Spearmen: They are easy to deal with. Avoid them and fire. You can also charge from behind. It works sometimes, but be sure to turn back after each charge...

Against Pikemen: Ouch! They are well armoured (most of times) and their pikes are deadly. Avoid them. You can fire at them but their armour is effective. Use their low speed to your advantage. Distract them in order to help friendly units. Charge from behind, but always turn back after each charge.

Da Leader!

When using the General's Bodyguard Unit: It is Heavy Cavalry, so follow the instructions above on "How to Heavy Cavalry" You do not want to kill your general, so after each charge turn back.

This unit is very valuable, so be careful and don't try to do anything risky.

Conclusion

Charge...Charge...Charge...and Charge again. Hope this friendly guide has provided you with some insight into how to play better. See you at the Somme Gentleman! ;)
