Troubleshooting

Where Is My Save File?

The game saves into the

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\MijuGames\Planet Crafter

directory, where

%USERPROFILE% is your Windows user's home directory path. For example, mine is C:\Users\akarnokd

We will likely ask for your log file (see next section) and save file with which you have trouble with.

Where Is The Log File / Player.log File?

The game puts the log file, named Player.log into

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\MijuGames\Planet Crafter

directory, where

%USERPROFILE% is your Windows user's home directory path. For example, mine is C:\Users\akarnokd

Windows typically hides the extension so you'll have to look for a line

Player ................................. Text Document

in Windows Explorer.

We will likely ask for your log file (see next section) and save file with which you have trouble with.

My Game Crashes Before The Main Menu

When the game crashes before you reach the main menu, it can mean several things:

Corrupted install

Verify game files on steam by right clicking on the game in the Steam Library, picking Properties, then on the Local Files click on the Verify game files button.

Outdated mods

More and more people mod their game, then forget that mods get/need updates too, especially after a major game update.

See the section below about mods.

Game runs on the integrated graphics device

Sometimes, games pick the integraded GPU instead of the discrete/high performance GPU.

To make sure this doesn't happen, go your Windows desktop, right click to bring up the popup menu and select Screen settings. In the dialog, scroll down to the Graphics settings link and click it. In the new dialog, browse for the game's exe file*, then select the High performance option.

* Typically found at c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\The Planet Crafter\.

Multi-monitor setup

The game doesn't seem to appreciate more than one monitor or not running on a secondary monitor.

Unplug the second monitor (i.e., pull the HDMI/DisplayPort cable out of the videocard), try starting the game, quit, then replug your monitor.

Driver crash

Unity games are notorious for crashing the graphics drivers, especially with the latest processors and GPUs (also more likely with AMD products).

You can try the following checks/workarounds:

Update drivers.

Verify the integrity of Windows by running sfc /scannow in an administrative command line.

Limit the framerate via driver settings, possibly to 60Hz or lower.

Force VSync via driver settings.

Downclock your GPU or VRAM by 100 MHz.

Reseat your video card and replug the PCIe power cables carefully.

Check your power supply unit (PSU) . Lately, certain PSU- Motherboard - Videocard combo may not work well together.

Game Causes Black Screen / No Signal / Machine Shutdown

Looks like your GPU tripped its own safeguards against overpower/overvoltage situations. Some power supply units may also be a bit finicky and cut power to your GPU or your entire machine.

Still hearing music

In this case, your video crashed hard, but the system survived. Usually your monitor will also indicate No signal.

You'll have to reboot your machine, but before you hold down the power button, simply press it once quickly. Most of the time, this will trigger Windows to shut down gracefully.

If this doesn't work, you'll have to hold the power button so the machine shuts down. Note that this may lead to lost work in your other applications that were open.

Computer shuts down completely

In this case, your power supply (PSU) tripped its safeguards and cut power to your entire machine to prevent damage to it.

General workarounds

In both cases, it could be a number of things to check and try out:

Update drivers.

Verify the integrity of Windows by running sfc /scannow in an administrative command line.

Limit the framerate via driver settings, possibly to 60Hz or lower.

Force VSync via driver settings.

Downclock your GPU or VRAM by 100 MHz.

Reseat your video card and replug the PCIe power cables carefully.

Check your power supply unit (PSU) . Lately, certain PSU- Motherboard - Videocard combo may not work well together.

Can't See My Saves / Can't Create A New Save

Almost always this is due to a modded game. As of writing this, there are two known mods that can cause crashes that prevent you from playing altogether:

Mobile_crafter 0.0.1 by skrwoor

Show Next Unlockables 0.1.0 by aedenthorn

Uninstalling mods

In general, it could be any of the mods, therefore, you'll have to remove the offending mods. Worst case, you'll have to remove all of your mods. Note though that some mods modify the game in a way that may result in items being deleted when you uninstall a mod.

To uninstall any mod, go to your game's install directory (typically at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\The Planet Crafter) and into the BepInEx\plugins directory, then delete the respective mod subdirectory or DLL file. Basically the reverse what you did when installing said mods.

Note that you do not have to remove their config files from BepInEx\config.

I don't have mods

In this case, please find your save directory (see above), collect all your saves and the player log, then come to the Discord #help channel (https://discord.gg/MPUgt5eY) and post your files (drag them into the browser window).

My Ingame Screens Are Black / My Machines Don't Work

99% of the time, you run out of power. This can happen after major game updates as the power generators tend to be rebalanced (mostly nerfed).

Check the power screen ingame which should show that now you have higher demand than production. Build more power generators.

My Character Moves On Its Own

99% of the time, this is caused by a plugged-in controller, even if you don't play with a controller.

Unplug your controller.

I Can't Interact With Things

Please check that your multi-tool is not in the deconstruction mode. If so, switch to none or construction mode.

My Mods Don't Work

With every major game release, it is to be expected some mods will break and their author has to update the mod to become compatible again.

You'll have to check for newer versions of your installed mods and update them.

Where to look for updates

If you installed mod from NexusMods, check the last updated list:

https://www.nexusmods.com/planetcrafter/mods/?BH=0

Otherwise, visit the author's website and check their releases. For example:

https://github.com/akarnokd/ThePlanetCrafterMods/releases (many of them available on NexusMods too)

https://github.com/TysonCodes/PlanetCrafterPlugins/releases

Also check the Wiki for other/new mod authors:

No updates for my mod / still doesn't work

In that case, you'll have to remove said mod(s).

You can also try contact the author or post on the #modding Discord channel (https://discord.gg/MPUgt5eY).

When doing so, please post your Player.log and any affected saves (see the section above where you'll find them).

Doesn't Work!!!

Please come to the Discord #help channel (https://discord.gg/MPUgt5eY) channel and explain your situation in detail.

Please have the following information/data ready:

Your hardware specification, including your CPU, GPU and RAM amounts.

What version of Windows are you running (or what non-Windows operating systems you use under the game).

Are you playing the Steam or GoG version (latter may be a bit behind).

Your Player.log file (see above how to get it).

All relevant save files (see above how to get them).

I or some other community helper will respond to you and we'll try to get the issue resolved. Thank you.
