Basic Starting Hints
Look at them real-time reflections!
Guide to this Guide:
This guide is meant to give some hints, sort of like a hint line, to the riddles in the main quest, as they are very different from the rest of the game, and most of the answers aren't found in-game.
Most of the riddles in this game are thankfully pretty easy and have common answers, but there are a few standout difficult ones that you have to solve, which is the main reason for this guide.
So for each section:
Privateer's Hold <-- is the location of the riddle
(Penalty: None) <-- is what monster spawns to attack (if any), if you get the riddle wrong.
Workarounds: Wait, that's a daggerfall dungeon. <-- tells you an alternate way to not solve the riddle
Breaking out of the Imperial sewers (This isn't a riddle, but you might not realize the solution is told to you.)
The answer to escaping this first dungeon is given to you at the very start through what Ria (aka Ghost Lady), tells you.
Originally posted by The UESP:"Do not fear for it is I, Ria Silmane. (Player's name), listen to me, there are no others left to carry on this fight. You have been left in this cell to die. Jagar Tharn, Imperial Battlemage of Tamriel has taken on the guise of the true Emperor. He does not see you as a threat, being only a minor part of the Imperial Court. In that act of arrogance, he has made his first mistake. Look to the north wall of this cell. You will find a ruby key which will unlock the door. Take it and make your escape. The passages here were once used by Tharn to hide treasures he had stolen from the Emperor's coffers. If you wish, you can gather enough to support yourself away from the Imperial Seat. Be careful, there are many creatures which inhabit the sewers now, vile rats and goblins."
"It is too late for me, for I am already dead. Only my powers as a Sorceress keep me between this life and the next. That power however is waning. Do not succumb to greed or you may find these tunnels to be your final resting place as well. I can still work my magic to a certain extent. If you travel west from this cell, then south, you will find a Shift Gate. It will transport you far enough from the center of the Empire that you should be safe. If you survive these sewers you will see me again. Remember, (Player's name), Tharn has taken on the guise of the Emperor. No one will gainsay his word for yours. I will come to you again in your dreams, so it is imperative that you rest from time to time. In that way I will be able to communicate with you and lend my aid. You are entering a dangerous arena, my friend, one in which the players are beings beyond your mortal comprehension. I do not envy your role. There is however a power within you as yet untapped. Look for me when you have gained experience in the world. You are my last and best hope."
Riddle Hints
Note that all riddle hints are to be used along with the riddle text, these extra hints don't replace the riddle itself, they are just an extra nudge in a certain direction.
Also thanks to the UESP for their MQ guide, so I didn't have to find them all in-game.
Stonekeep: No Riddles
Fang Lair:
Cell Door Riddle:
This first riddle is a very simple logic puzzle. Just figure out which door has the correct key and answer with a number. You only have 3 options, so if you get it wrong, you can eventually get it by guessing the other two, if you survive. (Penalty: A handful of Spiders)
Workaround: If I remember correctly, you can cast a _____ spell and be able to see the key in the back. Obviously that cell is the correct one, and you can respond to the question with that answer to open the door.
Lava Room Riddle:
This is something that actually exists in the game, that has fingers, and is inanimate. There are two similar terms that will work for this answer.(Penalty: None)
Bonus Loot: There is a secret room on this floor, though you would have to had prepared ahead of time to reach it with magic items, drinks or spells.
Fortress of Ice:
Tablet Vault Room:
This one has two similar answers. The first is all around you. The second is only outside. (Penalty: None)
The Labyrinthian:
Domain of Morgus:
It's something procrastinators often sit around and do. (Penalty: The wraith of Morgus)
Domain of Kanen:
An object associated with time. (Penalty: The wraith of Kanen)
The Finale: (Staff piece 2)
When it says "these halls", it is specifically an object that helped you get to where you are now in this dungeon. (Penalty: None)
Selene's Web:
No Riddles
Elden Grove:
The island door: (Staff piece 3)
Something that thieves may leave behind somewhere, or can alert someone to their presence. (Penalty: None)
Workaround: A wizard can break in through the outer walls with a certain spell...
It's a trap!!!:
One of the most common answers to riddles. Sometimes called the great equalizer. (Penalty: None, it actually gives another hint in the middle of the sentence.)
Temple of Agamanus:
Tablet Vault Room:
A natural thing that if it's not there, then it's dark. (Penalty: None)
Halls of Colossus:
1st Riddle:
It's not really a riddle, and when it tells you you aren't going to guess it, it's right. The answer lies on the first floor, where the architect of this dungeon ("this hell") has inscribed their name on a fountain, from which the river flows. Travel upstream, find that name, and type it in as your answer.
2nd Riddle: (Staff piece 4)
The second is also not a normal riddle, but a math problem, and this one is terrible. "...who left this world twenty-six years ago." is the kind of information they put in math tests to trip you up, so ignore that line completely. The answer is (2 * (3 * Agamamnus)) / (Igon / 9).
These apply to both of the above:
Penalty: Secret doors to hidden rooms open next to each door. I think they each contain 2 random/leveled undead.
Workarounds: 1: Certain magic wall passing spell , 2: Use Same spell as 1 in secret room, stand on ledge + parkour to jump over the wall. Note that your character has to have the ability to jump that distance, and to escape that room, you have to do even more difficult jumps than to get in, using those floating platforms.
Temple of the Mad God
Diamond Room:
As the riddle says, something made of wood that can burn out. There are two similar responses that both work. (Penalty: None)
Crystal Tower
Tower top vault: (Staff piece 5)
A shell with a golden thing inside. Or, if you excuse the Hobbit reference, "A box without hinges, key, or lid, Yet golden treasure inside is hid." (Penalty: None)
Mines of Khuras
No riddles
Crypt of hearts
Crypt vault: (Staff piece 6)
The line referencing sometimes tall, sometimes short, depends on the time of day when outside. (Penalty: None)
Reference hint: "This is like taking candy from a baby, which is fine by me."
Vaults of Gemin
The tablet room:
A type of flora that can "create tears" after it "dies". (Penalty: None)
Reference hint: They share many things in common with ogres.
Murkwood
Outer Gate:
A common idea or motivation in medieval knights tales. (Has to do with chivalry). That idea is still in many stories today, and will still be around for years to some. (Penalty: None)
Inner vault: (Staff piece 7)
Another thing that has to do with nature. The weight it can carry depends on how the mass of the object is distributed. (Penalty: ALL the Iron Golems in the cages!!!)
Reference hint: Don't even say it isn't wet.
Black Gate
Floor 2 entrance: It also comes in showers. (Penalty: None)
Dagoth - Ur
Leaving the heart of the volcano: (The last staff piece)
One of the most famous riddles ever. The answer is in the riddle itself. (Penalty: None)
Answers If You Still Can't Figure It Out.
Still can't figure it out? While the point of this guide was to give some extra hints, I later decided I might as well put the answers here too.
If you just skipped to this section, I recommend giving the hints a try as it is more rewarding that way.
Fang Lair: 1. Cell 2 2. Glove / Gauntlet
Fortress of Ice: 1. Air / Wind
Labyrinthian: 1. nothing 2. hourglass 3. a key
Elden Grove: 1. footsteps 2. time
Temple of Agamanus: 1. the sun
Halls of Colussus: 1. Theodorus 2. (Don't feel bad about cheating on this one) 108 {Why? The ages are obviously the sum of alphabetical indices of the letters in their respective names. So for Igon, since I is the 9th letter of the alphabet, that letter would be 9. You next add the numbers of the rest of the letters in their names, and plug those sums into the equation above, replacing their names. Igon is 45. Agamamnus is 90, and yes, it is spelled differently than the name of the temple you just visited, but you use the spelling in the riddle with the extra m. That equation I wrote is what is stated in the text of the riddle, but more readable. }
Temple of Mad God: 1. torch / match
Crystal Tower: 1. Egg
Crypt of Hearts: 1. Shadow
Vaults of Gemin : 1. Onion
Murkwood : 1. love 2. water
Black Gate : 1. rain
Dagoth Ur : 1. e {yes, just the letter e}
Conclusion
Thanks for reading this guide. Hope it helped give you more hints for the solution, while not giving you the answer explicitly, so you still feel smarter than this game.
Feel free to add extra riddle hints of your own in the comments, tell which dungeon, which riddle, and put the solution in a spoiler if you can. Also, you can ask me questions if needed, I will try to answer them if I can.
Don't forget to like and favorite it if you liked it or want to find it easily later!
