Surviving The Merciless Climate Of Rise Of The Tomb Raider's Netcode

Endurance Coop Guide image 1

So you finally got that Golden Child achievement and braved the horrors of the Cold Darkness and Lara's Nightmare zombie modes. Now you've gotta venture into multiplayer for some 'cheevos. What!?

Like most multiplayer achievements, the most difficult part of these ones is a) finding a willing victim partner and b) managing to avoid having the game crash, freeze, lag out, or otherwise ruin your perfectly frigid wilderness experience.

With that in mind, I've put together this short guide to help others navigate the pitfalls of Rise of the Tomb Raider's netcode (a portmanteau of "network code," i.e. the way that the game handles multiplayer, and a term you'll probably hear a lot should you run afoul of its dark side), targeted especially at those who just want the achievements and are willing to forsake honour to get them.

Update on 24/04/2019: I have been informed that as of December last year, a patch has broken the online matchmaking service in Rise of the Tomb Raider, making co-op play impossible. To work around this, both you and your co-op partner will need to roll back to the 811.3 build of the game. More details here.

Lag: turns tomb raiders into superheroes.

General Tips

Practise. Play the single-player Endurance mode to familiarise yourself with the wilderness and its mechanics. Multiplayer is much the same, just with an extra hanger-on, and that hanger-on will appreciate it if they don't have to tell you how to avoid spike traps.

I used to be an adventurer like you... Consider playing on the Adventurer difficulty. There are no coop achievements requiring a higher difficulty, so why make things unnecessarily difficult for yourself?

Partners who suffer together stay together (or something like that). Stay together. With the exception of the Alone Time achievement, all of the achievements can and should be obtained while together. "But splitting up lets us explore at twice the speed!" I hear you protest. Yes, you are correct, but with a major caveat: the game's poor netcode will hunt you down. The further apart you are from each other, the more the client player (the one who's not the host) will lag, to the point where they can't do a single thing. They'll be trying to defend themselves from invisible enemies, unable to interact with any collectibles, and in the extreme case, will spontaneously drop to the ground and need reviving (I've had this happen on more than one occasion). Of course, if you both have great internet and live in the same country you might avoid these issues, but you probably won't know if that's the case so it's better to play it safe. Stick together.

You're the light of my life, said Lara to the lantern. Carrying a lantern means you never need to worry about heat, so you might as well do that when possible. Also, in a pinch it's actually possible to warm yourself up by stepping on the fire created by a fire arrow. This also damages your health, however, so only do this when in dire need of warmth.

Tomb raiders don't pack snacks. Never start exploring a crypt when your hunger is yellow or red. You might make it, but just to be safe, squirrel away a morsel or two before spelunking to ensure Lara doesn't cramp on the edge of a spike pit.

Hot single tomb raiders in your area! As previously mentioned, try to find partners that live in the same country as you for the sake of lower latency. To this end, I suggest posting on Steam's forums to find other players, as the game's matchmaking isn't terribly useful this long after release.Because nothing says "serious about survival" like a sports bra, sweat pants, and bare feet in the icy wilderness.

Suggested Cards

Each player may select up to two cards. Some cards affect only the player who selected them (like outfits), while others affect both players (like weapons and the god-awful "friendship trail").

Weareth mother's drapes. Or any master-tier outfit to unlock all skills and look stylish in the process. Affects one player only.

Sticks of pointy death. The Death's Breath V card. Everyone loves a compound bow - Lara certainly does. It's silent and deadly and pretty much the only weapon you'll ever need (barring those cravings for some shotgun action, naturally). Grants the bow to both players.

Zombies, maan. The Infected card will offset the above negative modifiers with its +100%, and some players find infected enemies easier to dispatch than Trinity and Deathless blokes. Affects both players (obviously).

Achievements

The most important point: you can only unlock these achievements after selecting the associated challenge before starting the mission. That restricts you to a maximum of four achievements per mission (two challenges are selected by each player). Completed challenges will unlock the achievement for both players.

Note that unless the description states you need to escape or extract from the mission, these achievements will unlock mid-mission (in Steam) as soon as you meet the requirements. If you then fail the mission, they'll still be ticked off in the in-game menu. (If the game crashes, they won't be ticked off but you'll still have them in Steam.)

I still recommend extracting each time, as it's not that hard and you'll probably peeve off your partner if you start killing yourself without explanation.

Most of the achievements have self-explanatory descriptions, so I'll just add comments to a few that need clarification.

I have also prefixed each achievement with a number of stars to indicate their approximate difficulty (by my reckoning).

Key: *easy, **medium, ***hard.

* A Feast for Two: Eat the meat of 3 bears with your partner.

* A Dinner for Two: Eat the meat of 3 wolves with your partner.

* A Snack for Two: Eat the meat of 5 rabbits or squirrels with your partner.

* Adventure Friends: Escape the forest with 5 Artifacts.

** Adventure Besties: Escape the forest with 5 Medium and Large Artifacts.

Medium artifacts are the codices, and large artifacts are the sarcophagi. There should always be exactly one medium or large artifact per crypt (I found an empty crypt once, but I think it was just glitched). This unlocked for me after escaping with 5 medium and 4 large artifacts, so it does not need to be 5 of each, just a combined total of 5 - though some players have reported you need at least 2 medium artifacts for it to count. As the host I was also the one who selected the challenge and collected all of the medium and large artifacts (but the achievement unlocks for both players upon extraction), so try that if you're having trouble getting this achievement.

** Sisters of Artemis: Kill a combined total of 10 dangerous animals in a single Expedition.

Dangerous animals include wolves, bears, and lynxes.

** Sisters of Athena: Kill a combined total of 25 enemies in a single Expedition.

Enemies include Trinity soldiers, Deathless, and Infected.

*** Team Survival: Escape the forest after 7 days without using a single revive.

You must extract on day 8 to complete the challenge. One day/night cycle is 10 minutes, so this will take roughly 1 hour 20 minutes.

* Pick-Me-Up: Revive a player.

** No One Left Behind: Revive a player 3 times in a single expedition.

You begin the mission with just 2 revives, so you must gain at least one more by completing a crypt.

** Bonding Time: Escape the forest after surviving for 7 days with at least 10 Artifacts.

You must extract on day 8 to complete the challenge. One day/night cycle is 10 minutes, so this will take roughly 1 hour 20 minutes.

* Alone Time: Spend at least one day more than 60 meters apart.

One day means a full 24 hours, day and night. Try to do this with someone who has a good connection for the reasons mentioned in the third General Tip above.

* Communication Skills: Kill 5 enemies that have been marked by your partner.

Mark an enemy by aiming at them (holding the right mouse button) and pressing space. A skull icon will appear.

*** Master and Apprentice: Escape the forest after surviving 10 days with at least 20 Artifacts.

You must extract on day 11 to complete the challenge. It will only take about 4 days to get 20 artifacts, so the biggest challenge here is just surviving the time. It will take roughly 1 hour 40 minutes to reach day 11.

** For the Night is Dark: Clear 3 Enemy Camps at night in a single expedition.

An enemy camp is any fire-in-a-barrel surrounded by Trinity or Deathless (or Infected) soldiers with weapons crates or an orange tent nearby.

* Teamwork: Warm up from freezing by standing next to a campfire lit by your partner.

Your heat meter must be flashing red for it to count as freezing - simply being in the red will not work.

** Get Away from Her!: Kill an enemy attacking your critically injured partner.

* Say "Aaah": Eat with your partner while at least one of you is starving.

Your food meter must be flashing red for it to count as starving - simply being in the red will not work. Any food source works, even food bags found in camps. Just make sure the coop symbol is displayed over the food source, indicating that your partner is in range.

* "Teamwork": Collect an Artifact while your partner is down.

Find an artifact, shoot your partner with a poison arrow, collect the artifact. Easy. Then apologise to your partner.
