Step 1
Enable "load textures on demand" in the video section of the configure button in the launcher.
This was what made the difference between crashing and not crashing in large battles, but it introduced stuttering and abhorrent fps during big fights, especially clusters of melee fighting.
Step 1 Alt.
As an alternative, if you are okay with reduced battle size, you can leave "load textures on demand" off and enjoy smooth framerates. But to keep the game from crashing you will have to also reduce the battle size. Around 300 did it for me initially, but I knew deep inside me that my system could handle more and that it was a game/engine problem, so I dug deeper and that's when I found step 2.
Step 2
Download Warband Script Enhancer. BUT not WSE2. I tried that too and it crashes no matter what I do.

You need to download the following things:
Replace your game .exe with the one you downloaded. Follow the rest of the instructions in the picture to install WSE.
Step 3
Launch the game through WSE, crank your battle size to the max and enjoy Pendor with smooth big battles and no crashes.
Everything is save compatible, if you are asking.
Caveat
The only downside to this is that the game is not launched through Steam, so it doesn't count your playtime or (probably) achievements.
