Notes About This Guide
Since Left 4 Dead is still out of date, and the community small, nearly half of the servers have mods or certain specifications. This guide covers the traditional gameplay of L4D1 Versus, as in Valve's rules/terms. If you frequent a certain server and is customized, study around a bit and modify your strategy if needed.
Basic Strategy (Infected Vs Survivor)
Infected's RoleSurvivor's RoleBE A TEAM PLAYER!
Nothing brings down survivors quicker than teaming up with other infected and attacking them at the same time. This cripples the survivors more. Stay with other infected close by. If one starts attacking, join in right after.
Doing Damage? Doing good.
Every good amount of damage helps. This can waste up their medkits and pills. The best way to deal more damage is when one survivor is farther from the others or has other things on their mind. Died? Don't worry. You can try again. Also, practice makes perfect.
Know your abilities and roles.
Being different infected can be stressful, but just like a quiz, the more you study and practice the more you'll get the hang of it. Hunters pounce, Smokers strangle, Boomers vomit and become bombs, and Tanks will roll in. Don't get discouraged (yeah the small community can be harassing and discouraging). Just keep it up, accept help from others, and you'll be on your way on knowing more than the basics.
STICK TOGETHER, TEAM!
Straying away leaves you more vulnerable to get attacked. One person alone? BAD. Two people alone? Okay, but only temporary. Four people together? GOOD!
Set your priorities.
First off, don't go out your way to hunt down infected. They're gonna respawn again, end of story. Just stay close to your team. Is your teammate strangled or pounced? This should be your first priority: save them as soon as possible. Why? Well one thing can lead to another. You could be the next victim. The more firepower, the better.
Keep moving!
There's no time to stop and take a break. Sure if you're at red health, use a medkit, but keeping the flow is the most important thing in survival. Why? Well, faster to find pills, weapons, less hoards of zombies, and the infected will have a tough time keeping up with you. Now I'm not saying run off without the others, but stay close to your team while moving quickly!
Hunter Vs Survivor
Hunter's RoleHunter can be one of the easiest infected to play. Simply you crouch and press the mouse button to attack. Teaming up with other hunters also helps cripple the survivors even more. Attack when other hunters are attacking. Is a survivor grabbing a gas tank or barrel? Attack them! Chances are, survivors will have a stray bullet hitting the item while trying to take you out. The only thing you should not do as a hunter is to jump high over the survivors. This can leave a lot of room to kill you in one shot. Try to practice pouncing in zig-zag movements. If you need to retreat, make use of the buildings around you (need confirmation on how to do this).
Survivor's RoleIf you see a hunter in your range, take them out as fast as possible. Chances are there is gonna be a huge attack on your teammates. However, a hunter may taunt you with its cry or jumping on buildings. Just keep your eye on them. When they're close by, finish them off. When they retreat, ignore them again until they appear close by. The best way to take out a hunter is aiming at their chest. If your teammate is pounced, shoot from a distance. If you're close by, melee him once then shoot.

Smoker Vs Survior
Smoker's RoleSurvivor's RoleAs a Smoker, make use of the rooftops and other hidden areas. Stay as far away from the rest of the survivors, but stay close to the one or ones who stray. Attacking with no support is the worst thing you can do. It's best to constrict the ones who are occupied (i.e. hoards, carrying stuff) and the ones who stray away. If you are spotted and bullets fire at you, hide wherever you can. When the time is right, strike again!
When your teammate is attacked, shoot the tongue if your teammate is close by. This will cancel the strangle faster than taking him out. After that, try to take out the Smoker with your teammate that you saved. Be on your toes throughout the game, as the Smoker may attack you at the worst time. Having a rifle is handy, as they can be taken out easily from a long distance.
Boomer Vs Survivor
Boomer's RolePlaying the Boomer is a lot of responsibility and is also risky. Not only you have low health, but the barf is mid-range and the cooldown is super long. Of course, the quickest way is dropping down in the middle of the survivors and have them shoot you, but why stop there? The best way to boom is to find a corner or ambush them in a very small room (i.e. safehouse(may vary), closet, bathroom). You can try the ceiling, however it can be risky, as the range of the barf is nearly mid-range and this makes it easier for the survivors to get you. Your primary goal is to at least barf one person. Your secondary goal is to stand near the survivors so you can explode on them. Try not to stand so close to walls, however, as some bullets can be shot through and kill you instantly.
Survivor's RoleBoomers should be the easiest to take out in a distance. Shoot him if none of your teammates are near it. Try to note the noises to predict how close they are. If you know where they are, try shooting through the walls to try and get rid of him. If six shots don't do it, move on. If you are in a building and the rooms are too small, make haste on getting out of the building as soon as possible. Try not to melee them too much. At their max health, melee-ing them three times makes them explode (well it does some damage). If you are your teammates are barfed, stay behind other teammates that are not(if you know where they were at). For those not barfed, protect your teammates. The zombies will go after the barfed survivors, not you. For both, crouch or standing while shooting. For example, one crouches in the back while the other stands in the front.
Tank Vs Survivors
Survivor's RoleTank's RoleBeing a Tank is like winning something. It can be a grail to turn the tides around. However, there is actually an art on playing the Tank, can easily be screwed up, and is a huge responsibility. Don't head straight for the survivors(unless they are in a predicament, then ambush them). Instead, make use of the props around you to avoid as much bullets as possible. Also, if there are any props you can hit to knock down (marked by a red glow) nearby survivors, use them! Don't rely on your punch too much, as it can really slow you down. The best sure way to know if you can punch someone is if you touch them and feel yourself slowing down. If they are retreating after a punch or if they are in mid-range, that is when you use your rock throw. Focus on teammates that are red or yellow (in that order). If a teammate goes down, forget about that one and move on to the next. Either the zombies or your infected team will take care of the rest.
The Tank is when you need to focus a lot. Not only it's him you have to worry about, but the other infected who come to assist. Make note of infected noises around you so you can be aware of which infected are out. The key thing to do is run, but try to keep close to your teammates. This can be tough to do, as the Tank can scatter your teammates with his punch or have other infected capture them. However, you need to take the Tank down. If you are at green health, then keep at mid-range around the Tank and dodge by crouch jumping around or jumping around. Shotguns and rifles are your best friend here. Fire can be too, but risky as it can increase the Tank's speed. Use this tactic when he is far away enough!
No Mercy Map Strategy
Infected's RoleSurvivor's RolePart 1: ApartmentThere's not much area to hide, but that makes up for good areas of ambush attacks, especially for Boomers. For Smokers and Hunters, there is a drop-in point where you can capture stray survivors. If one or two are left behind near the drop-in point, attack them when they are off-guard (work together with your fellow teammate if there are two). If you want to make an ambush with your fellow teammates, then the drop-in point would be the best place once they drop down.
Once they are outside, it can get harder to attack them. There is another good spot for a Boomer on the way. At the exit of the alleyway, have the Boomer drop down from the building and surprise barf them. There is a car alarm later on. It can be useful to have one infected by the car to surprise attack the survivors. With that, they may trigger the alarm. If the Boomer is available, have it climb to the tallest building. If the survivors trigger the alarm or get distracted by the other infected, drop down and barf on them.
Part 2:This is where the Survivors have more advantage. Many pipebombs and molotovs are out there for their convenience. Make use of the beginning at the safehouse, where you can climb on top (Smokers, this is your chance.) There is a drop-in point right after the safehouse. Try to grab one survivor, or two if working with another teammate. The Boomer should stay right below the safehouse under the drop-in point. This will be a good area to barf.
Try to be sneaky where the escalators are. Stay on top of them and make an ambush attack. Boomers, try to be aggressive as much as possible. At least try to explode or barf on one person. This will encourage them to use the pipe bombs they came across. Hunters, when it comes to the train areas, jump over the trains to attack the survivors on the other side. This can surprise and ambush them.
When the Tank spawns, it will have a tough time, as chances are they now have a molotov blocking the pathways. AVOID THE FIRE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, even if it risks changing the role to another player! Rest of the teammates, assist the Tank as much as you can. There will be a lot of narrow areas the survivors will try to go through. If you're the Tank, run towards the survivors and hit the pillars to make your way towards them and damage them. Try to jump on top of the train instead of going inside it.
TBC
Part 1: ApartmentThe starting area, the rooftop, is considered the safe area. Once you open the door that leads to downstairs, that is when the round starts. You will start in the apartment building. Since the area is small, this can be tough avoiding the Infected, especially Boomers. If you hear one, try shooting through the walls where you think it is at. Remember to close all the doors you see!
DROP-IN Point! Once you come across the kitchen area, there is a huge hole. Make sure all your teammates drop down. Otherwise, a Hunter or Smoker can get them and it will be impossible to get back up. Watch out to see if there are any Hunters or Boomers below, as this can be easy for them to get you.
Make your way quickly outside. There is a car alarm. Chances are the Infected will hang around it, so don't let the taunts get to you.
Part 2:The good news is you have the most advantage on this level. You will come across many pipebombs and molotovs. However, the beginning will be an ambush. Keep note of possible Boomers on the top or bottom.
DROP-IN Point! Be sure to drop down with your fellow survivors as soon as possible, as a Smoker and/or Hunter can get you easily, even if it risks being barfed/exploded on. Make note of the escalators, as they can hide easily and ambush you. There are pipebombs around the stalls, so make sure each member grabs one. However, save them for real emergencies. (I.E. Red/Yellow teammates, hunters or smokers capturing players.)
Watch out for the Infected that hide behind the trains or inside them as well. Be on your toes for that area. If you come across molotovs, grab them, but save it once the Tank spawns. The idea is to block the pathway from where the Tank comes. The first try may be a failure, but if you have a second one, you're lucky. If the Tank is caught on fire, just run until it dies. If you fail to light the Tank on fire, get out of the room with the stone foundations. The Tank can use that to clear the way and damage you and your teammates.
Have one or two people stay inside the train to get a clear shot of the Tank incase he goes through the train, but watch out for the special infected, as it can be easier for them to get you. Have the others back you up as you flank them.

Difficulty: Hard
Achievement Description: Kill all four Survivors on one life as a Tank.
How to get: This is a situational achievement. Depending if you get Tank and where you spawn as a Tank, this can either be easy or a tough one. Remember, you have to personally incapacitated and/or kill all survivors. The easiest way to do this is pick on the ones who are red and/or yellow health. Also, make use of cars or moveable props nearby and that are near survivors. If you hit them and they are hit by them, they are immediately incapacitated. Check the Tank vs Survivor part for pointers on Tank.
Difficulty: Hard-Very Hard
Achievement Description: Cover four Survivors with Boomer bile at once.
How to get: Depending on the survivor's positions and the stage, this can be a difficult achievement and is more luck-based. Try waiting for the survivors to be in a small room, cornered up somewhere, falling down to an area, or if you can stay hidden above them while making eye contact. See if they're occupied with something else. If they are distracted, get close to them and barf quickly, as you can die in the next second. Exploding on the survivors does not count.
Difficulty: Very Hard
Achievement Description: Drag a Survivor 100 feet with your tongue as a Smoker.
How to get: This is more of a luck achievement, and this achievement is really precise. Using the maximum range you can, pull a survivor. If it equals to 100 feet without you dying, then the achievement will unlock. This is recommended to work with players or a friend in order to get this achievement. A recommended map to try would be Blood Harvest, as there are a lot of open trails. There is a glitch in Dead Air finale behind the fence in the rope area. If you pull your survivor, it can count the achievement.
Difficulty: Easy-Medium
Achievement Description: Constrict two Survivors on one life as a Smoker.
How to get: While alive, use your tongue twice in your life on two different survivors. Make use of the rooftops or areas where survivors have difficulty attacking you. This will make it easier on getting the achievement.
Difficulty: Easy-Medium
Achievement Description: Dole out 5000 total Survivor damage as a Special Infected.
How to get: Simply deal 5000 damage. Once you study and train yourself a bit, you should be able to do a good amount of damage. This can take some time getting the achievement, so have patience.
Difficulty: Medium-Hard
Achievement Description: Pounce two different Survivors on one life as a Hunter.
How to get: This can easily be done if you pounce a survivor who is incapacitated and finish him off, then go find another survivor and pounce him. This depends on the situation of the suvivors. This can also work when you pounce someone close to the survivors, and if they melee you and you're quick enough, you can pounce a different one again.
Difficulty: Hard-Very Hard
Achievement Description: As an Infected, incap a Survivor who has entered and left a safe room.
How to get: Again, another situational achievement. Chances are, there are some survivors that may run off ahead into the safe house, and may come outside if needed to save someone. This achievement counts too if you come across someone heading to the safehouse and incap them near it.
Difficulty: Easy-Medium
Achievement Description: Catch a rare strain of infection, then pass it on to someone else.
How to get: Chances are, you're gonna be barfed by a Boomer in your gameplay. If the Boomer has this achievement, then you will get this achievement.
Difficulty: Medium
Achievement Description: As a Special Infected, incap someone who is trying to sacrifice themselves.
How to get: This can still have some challenge. On the Port Finale of The Sacrifice, using a Smoker or Hunter (the Tank will spawn far away so there's no way to get there in time), constrict or pounce on them as they're trying to turn on the generator for the final time. It still counts if you managed to pounce them right when the survivor activates it. I recommend spawning within the building nearby so that the other survivors can't get you by shooting range.
Difficulty: Easy-Medium
Achievement Description: Smoker pull a bile-covered Survivor until you hold him during Crash Course.
How to get: During the Crash Course Campaign, stay near a Boomer. As soon as he vomits or explodes on the survivors, and if it hits them, pull a survivor quickly to you. The achievement will unlock once the survivor is fully pulled towards you.
Difficulty: Medium
Achievement Description: Win a Versus campaign of Crash Course.
How to get: This is a bugged achievement. You actually have to lose the Crash Course versus game. In my case, I've earned it when either team was able to complete either stage, but the other team won. The achievement pops up once the game finishes and returns to the lobby.
Difficulty: Very Hard
Achievement Description: Your team incapacitates three Survivors within five seconds.
How to get: This is the matter of timing, teamwork, and luck. Work with your fellow teammates and try to incapacitated them at the same time. If it succeeds and the timing is right, the achievement will unlock.
