Part 1: Beginning
V 1.2 Of Guide With Config File Edits That Boosts FPS And YouTube Link For Different Settings And It's Impact On Fps And Quality!I see people still have problem after the small patch released today on the 10th of february when many thought we would see a Day 1 patch with alot of fixes. This could take time for the devs to actually fix. While we wait for them to do it, lets try to minimize the impact of lag and stutter and try to get some better performance.
This might be basic things for some that have knowledge to their PC, but alot of people actually don't and then this guide might come in handy for you. Much of this can actually be applied to alot of other games!
No one is forcing you to do this. It simply if you want the game to potentially run smoother and better while we wait for a patch and driver updates from AMD/Nvidia to hopefully fix some of the performance. No, you should not have to try this on your "new awesome gaming PC that can run everything" but if this don't run as you expect, then what have you to loose for the moment being?
This may not at all help your lag or stuttering. But with this we have atleast tried. I know alot of people that with these fixes actually got much better performance and much less stuttering. Be sure to try all the steps, don't skip any cause its a chance that you actually skipping a step that could help.
Also! Be sure to actually check if fixes helps your game. While stuttering only can be felt by the player mostly, you can actually use a software to display your fps. Either use the built in "Steam Overlay" Fps Indicator, use Nvidia Experience overlay (ALT + R) in game or use MSI Afterburner with Rivatuner to benchmark your games FPS and get Average FPS for a better look at whats helping. This is really important also to find if your GPU is bottlenecking or your CPU. If your GPU isn't utilized by more than ~90% its probably CPU bottlenecked. There is a problem atm with Cpu utilization it seems.
There are guides for this on youtube how to do it, i recommend you using that.
Their might be some typing and language errors, im sorry for that, i still think you can understand. I made this quickly since since alot of people needs the help now.
Part 1.5: Controller Vibration
This has not to do with the guide in general, however its quite important for immersion
Be sure to change your game to use Steam Input for rumble/vibrations to work on the Ps4 controller
and possiibly more. Be sure to restart the game or have it off when doing, otherwise controls will act weirdly.
Steam
Right click game
Options
Controls
"Activate steam input"
This should activate controller to start rumble. To test if it works, just go into the game and do a spell and the controller should start to rumble.
If not, do this
Go Steam
Settings
Controller
General Controller settings
Tick playstation configuration
Part 2: Accio Drivers!
Okey So Lets Start This Journey!First, be sure that all your drivers are up to date. This means Windows Drivers, Motherboard drivers, and ofcourse AMD and Nvidia drivers!
For updating Nvidia, download Geforce Experience to keep your drivers up to date:
https://www.nvidia.com/sv-se/geforce/geforce-experience/
For AMD, look here:
https://www.amd.com/en/support
Its also important to keep all your Windows 10/11 drivers up to date. I can't stress that enough. Don't skip these if it ain't for a special reason
Also be sure to google your motherboard drivers and keep it up to date.
Part 3: Reparo Computer
Please, Between Changing Multiple Settings, Go In The Game And Look That Everything Is Fine So If A Problem Would Occure Its Easier To Find It (however The Only Thing That Potentially Could Impact The Game Here For You In A Bad Way Would Be The Config Files, If Done WrongNo time to waste, follow these steps after updating all your drivers (DONT SKIP THAT STEP!!!)
Anti-Virus software
If you are using ANYTHING else then Windows Defender, try disabling your Anti-Virus.
There was a guy the other day that i helped just with this, massive lag and stuttering, he disabled his AV and it was all good! I think this is some kind of problem with some AVs not matching with Denuvo for the game, making huge lag and stutter for the game.
When you have disabled (more reasonable to remove the AV since some AVs are sneaky and are still on in the background) you should enable Windows Defender. Windows Defender is enought if you aren't usually doing stupid things, downloading strange files and happily clicking on every "free driver update" banner on the internet.
Nvidia Unlimited Shader Cache
Go to Nvidia Control Panel
Manage 3D settings (not using english language, but you should find it)
Global Settings in the tab
Set Shadercache Size: Unlimited
This could fix alot also for other games. Always be sure not to run your SSD or HDD completly full, always have space left on your SSD and HDD for games and windows to work without problem. Really important.
Disable Control Flow Guard for Hogwarts Legacy
Search on your computer for "Exploit protection"
Add Hogwarts Legacy exe file
In the window scroll down to "Control Flow Guard" and check Override system settings and toggle it OFF then hit Apply
If this is to hard for you to do, there are alot of guides how to do this, just google "Hogwarts Legacy control flow guard"
I wont link to any guide since im not permitted by any author of this.
Alot of people have had their game run much better after this one
Don't run alot of background programs and keep your pc clean
Keep your pc CLEAN. Don't install alot of ♥♥♥♥ on it if you don't need it. Make sure you are formatting your PC every now and then (i do it once in a year usually).
When you are playing the game, turn off all unecessary programs you have in the background. Especially don't run Wallpaper engine or something that is using yout GPU and CPU in the background! It can really disturb your performance having things like this on. Also don't run Twitch and Youtube with high resolutions on your other monitors. This will actually take away frames from you and the game might feel sluggish.
Keep your SSD and HDD with some free space
This is especially true for your system drive that you have installed your OS on. Don't let it go lower than 20gb of free storage. While you can, its not recommended at all. Also some games might store things on your drives temporary and need its free space.
Disable Overlays like Steam and Nvidia overlay
For some, this might increase fps by alot and also fix stutters and lag.
Disable your Steam overlay by
Steam
Settings
In-Game
Disable "Activate steam overlay in games"
And for Geforce experience
Geforce Experience
Settings
"Overlays in Game"
Uncheck it
If this doesen't help or you aren't happy with having them off, simply turn them on afterwards.
Give me more colors!!!
Here is a tip for you that makes the game much more vibrant!
If you are using Nvidia Overlay, simply hit ALT+F3, then add filter "Colors"
Set everything to value of 0 but Vibrance. I, myself use ~32
This could also be set in Nvidia Control Panel and i guess for AMD, it can be set in their drivers also
Last words
Be sure also to defragment your pc now and then, Windows usually to this on its own but it doesen't hurt to do it yourself.
Part 4: Reducio DLSS Upscaling
This is also important step that sooooo many has told me helped with lag and stuttering. While you shouldn't expect that to happen for you, it will atleast help with quality vs the old one shipped with the game. I made a guide for you that helps you with this here
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2929948757
Part 5: Leviosa Game!
Now, time for some fixing!
But before we start!
Always know your computer, your computer wont be better than what it is. Use quality settings after what CPU, GPU and RAM you have. If you are on a GTX 1050, yes, then you might have problems running it smoothly in Ultra. Thats how it is. If you have a 3570K intel processor, then yes, you will probably have stuttering since you are using a old CPU.
Its recommended to use 32 gb of ram also for this game, i have seen alot of people who got rid of lag with changing to 32gb instead of 16gb.
Don't expect your old computer to do Ultra and 4K. There are limits, learn them. This goes back to "Know your computer"
Okey, here we go
Please check this YouTube guide where you can see how different settings affect fps and for how much so you can look at what to turn up and down
https://youtu.be/N0mWVLhy954
Go into your games settings
Change your quality settings appropriate for your computer. Don't play on higher quality settings than what your computer can perform. Its not reasonable.
Change upscaling to use either DLSS (if Nvidia) or FSR2 (If AMD) then begin with preset "quality" and go all the way down to performance until you are happy with your smoothness/fps and can see that your GPU isn't the limiting factor.
Be sure to check also that your main GPU is selected in the settings so you don't run on your IGPU. I've heard someone had a bug with this where he could choose two of the same GPU, one of them was laggy and the other was fine. Probably a UI bug.
Disable ray tracing!!!
Do NOT run raytracing if you are here having problems with lag/stuttering. Its the setting that eats most of your performance without a doubt. Disable it. Later if they optimize the game better, you can try it again
Do not run 4K if your computer can't handle it!
As we talked about before
You bought a new fresh 4K Monitor? Well, your only halfway there. You need a capable PC in order to use 4K. Be sure to use a newer card, i would say probably a 3090+ to use 4K. If you still want 4K, use upscaler as mentioned above, to downscale the game to a lower resolution. This will otherwise eat your performance ALIVE
I might add new tips and tricks here the coming weeks, check back later
