[GUIDE] Colorado Rainbow Trout!

[GUIDE] Colorado Rainbow Trout!

Before You Start [IMPORTANT]

THIS METHOD REQUIRES AT LEAST LV9

This rainbow trout fishing method is expensive if you don't already have the correct gear. It could cost about 300-600 in game currency if you don't have the right gear. HOWEVER, rainbow trout fishing will make you many times your money back. (I make about 230 per day I stay there)

(Don't forget that you will also need 230 (+10 per day, so 240) to travel to Colorado)

1. Gear

Suggested Loadout: I suggest a spinning rod (any will do) along with a spinning reel (again, up to your preference). A lot of people use different line, but I suggest staying at or above 4Lb line so you can get out of snags in Colorado. For the lure, use a spinning lure.

Spinners: There are 4 different spinners you can choose from. You aren't required to buy a specific one but I recommend the Rainbow Spinner (the one all the way on the right). A lot of people say that the beetle (3rd one) works just as well. Don't worry about the gold cost, catching 1 unique rainbow trout will reward you with 5 gold back. (I catch a unique around every other day)

NEW UPDATE: I talked to a few fishers and the word around is that the bite rate of unique trouts (not sure if it also applies to other fishes) have been reduced drastically by the update sometime between 8/13/2015-8/14/2015.. Meaning the chances of you catching a unique is way less than before that update, and probably set to what it was intended to be. To give an example, some users only see a unique being caught (in chat notifications) around every 2 hours in real life. That being said, I still think spending gold on a spinner lure is still worth it. It probably won't be the last time you'll be using it and it only cost 4 gold.

NEWER UPDATE: Check the FAQ about unique's if you want to learn more about them

[IMPORTANT] Landing & Fish Nets

(All weights are estimates from my experience from fishing in Colorado)

When buying/upgrading your stringer or hut net you need one that's MAX SINGLE FISH WEIGHT will be at least 3Lbs if you want to keep anything. A unique rainbow trout usually weighs 5Lb minimum. So if you want to keep any unique you'll need one that has a max single fish weight that's higher then 5Lb. If you're still low level, you can use a Lv6 Jail stringer if you want to keep unique rainbow trouts. However, all Jail Stringers have a lower maximum Total Fish Weight. That means you will earn less profit at the end of the day. If you go with a hut, you will most likely have to release all unique rainbow trouts but will be able to keep more rainbow trouts and trophy's. HOWEVER, once you're level 12 you can buy a $400 FishHut that will allow you to carry a lot of fish and keep all unique you catch.

Rainbow Trouts weigh about 2.3Lbs to 3Lbs

Trophy Rainbow Trouts weigh about 3.5Lbs to 4.1 Lbs

Unique Raimbow Trouts weigh about 4.9 Lbs to 5.6 Lbs

License

You only have to buy the Advanced License for Colorado, since all we will be fishing is trouts we won't need a basic license.

2. How To Get To Colorado

[GUIDE] Colorado Rainbow Trout! image 22

Colorado is circled in purple. Make sure you selected your desired days and click travel. Remember that to travel there the base cost is 230 + 10 for each day. I recommend just selecting 1 day and then fast forwarding time and extending your trip however long you want. That way if you get bored or want to leave you won't be wasting extra money.

3. The Sweet (Fishing) Spot

Once you are at Colorado, you will have two choices. For this guide, we will be going to Ferntastic Fishing.

If you want to stand where I do, I stand on a rock. Keep in mind that it probably doesn't matter where you stand, but this spot works best for me.

Where To Cast: It's hard to describe where to cast, so most people will just say "the 4th tree from the left." "4th tree." But I will show you what they're/we are talking about. Starting from the left, count 4 trees right.

Once you know what the "4th tree" is just cast directly under it. That's where it works best for me. Most people stay within the 4th and 5th tree, I suggest you do the same since it seems to work for most people.

Drag & Reel Speed: This could change from reel to reel. But if you're using the spinning reel I suggested (or one similar) then set your reeling speed to slow (1/4) and your drag to 2/6. If you have a casting reel you may want to ask around but I do believe it is the same (reeling speed at 1/4 and drag to 2/6).

How Far Do You Cast???: When I started I threw my lure almost max (about 110). Since then I have began throwing it to about 80~90. Try both and see which spot works best for you. If most trouts are biting at around 70 then throw 80 or 90. If you try max casts and they bite around 100 then keep throwing it far. Ultimately it's what works best for you. I suggest to keep your bait in the water until 30ft. I have caught many trout in the 30-40ft's. After that just hold shift and reel in at max speed and recast.

(Note: You don't have to reel fast after 30 ft. It's up to you and I recommend you do, but try it for yourself. Some people still catch trouts in closer water.)

UPDATE: Casting at Tree 1 seems to work just as well when you starting hitting 7-9 PM

4. Time Of Day

For me, Colorado always has the same weather no matter how long I have stayed there. There is really no set time for when they bite. Like I tell a lot of people, you can catch them from 5 am right when you get there all the way up to when you want to leave.

There are some things I have noticed. They may work for you or they might not be of any use:

Start at an Early time, once you find that time to be not very good skip hours with T

I start at 10 AM, and it seems to work good for me.

It takes an average of 1hr 30min in-game to fill up on trouts (with a lv12 hut, 33Lb's of fish)

I suggest leaving room for 1 fish if you want to fish for EXP. You never know if you will catch a unique

5. Reel Method

[GUIDE] Colorado Rainbow Trout! image 47
[GUIDE] Colorado Rainbow Trout! image 48
[GUIDE] Colorado Rainbow Trout! image 49

The most important thing is that with trout fishing it's not about getting your lure/bait inshore as fast as you can. There are two methods I've gotten to know with the spinning lure.

First, this method doesn't work as well for me but seems to work for other users. It's similar to the second method (which works better for a lot of people who use these methods) but is faster (reeling wise). Essentially what you want to do is let your bait hit the bottom & reel in a bit, let it hit the bottom & reel in a bit, & repeat. By a bit I mean 1~2ft. What that does is when you reel in it raises it slightly and then you let it sink again. Basically it's a cheaper/easier version, in my opinion, of the lift and drop method. In this method you will basically be repeating that. So cast, and let it hit the floor, then begin using the method.

Second, the Lift & Drop method. I HIGHLY recommend this method over the other method. This method seems to work best for me when using a spinning lure and it seems like most people use this method. This is just a more advanced version of the first method. Then whats so different? In this method you will let the lure sit on the bottom for X amount of time. X being, whatever you feel like. You will also be using the right click function on your mouse/keypad .

Cast to desired distance at or between tree 4 & 5 I showed you earlier

Let lure hit the bottom

Hold right click until it no longer pulls the lure up (takes about half a second to 1 second) (DON'T HOLD TOO LONG)

Release right click, during this time your character will do an animation to lower your rod

Reel in/Tap reel (left click) 1 time, while your character is doing the animation to lower his rod

Let lure settle/hit the bottom

Let lure sit for X amount of time, before you repeatX can be 1 second to whatever you feel like. I haven't tried longer then half a minute and I don't suggest letting it sit there that long. Sometimes I have forgotten to reel in for around 30 seconds and I still catch a trout right after. I usually switch it up, from letting it sit there for a second then next time it's 5 seconds. Just switch it up is what I can tell you.

It sounds a bit confusing, but I made a video to show you the SECOND method.

How Do I Know When The Fish Bites? The easiest way I can tell you is that the fish will set the hook itself. Like a lot of bass or pike, you won't really know until it's already fighting you. With trout it's a lot like that. You will usually get a bite as soon as you raise it or while your lure is dropping it will start dragging.

6. FAQ, Tips, & Help

FAQ:

1. How do I catch trophy and unique rainbow trouts?

It's completely random. I've never seen anyone catching multiple unique trouts (back, to back, to back, etc). Same for trophy's, completely random when you catch them. With both of them you can usually tell you have one on by how strong they fight since they fight a lot harder then regular rainbow trouts, unless you catch one really close to shore where it doesn't matter. Just keep fishing trouts and you will get them eventually.

2. I don't have enough money what can I do/How do I level fast?

Buy the biggest hut you can, go to Missouri and fish large mouth bass (there are a few fellow guides on that if you don't know how to). They give around 10 credits each and it only costs you 25 or so to go there. To save money, buy multiple days or use T and skip to 12 AM and extend your trip. It only cost 5 credits to extend and it will reset your fish inventory and let you keep more fish.

3. Can you catch trouts with bait?

I have yet to catch a trout with a lot of the baits I've tried. I've only tried for a while though so if you want to test your luck you can try. I don't recommend it.

4. Do I have to cast where you do?

No, everything in this guide is what works best for me, as well as a common method between the masters of rainbow trout fishing. There are different spots that everyone thinks work best for them. If my method/spot doesn't work well for you try throwing near the weeds, experiment.

TIPS

For a spinning reel, set speed to slow [1/4] and drag to [2/6]

Cast between tree 4 & 5 like in the guide, right click before casting for target assist

Use a minimum of 4Lb line

If you snag, set drag to max and just reel a bit to get it out, then set drag back to normal

If fish is getting further while your reeling it in, USE right click to raise rod then release right click and keep reeling (REPEAT until fish is caught)

Practice, Practice, Practice.

Profit
