Guide To Getting The Master Of None Achievement

Introduction

The master of none title is easily the prettiest of the achievement titles. Just look at it.

But how do you get it? How do you create a team with 11 different synergies?

The answer is preparation. Specifically, you need to prepare to lose. The trick to getting the achievement, however, is to not lose too fast. Let's dig in!

Building A Losing Team

When I say you need to be prepared to lose, I'm not talking about 'open fort' strategies where you lose on purpose to get a bunch of free rerolls during the early rounds, when losing doesn't cost you too much life (relatively speaking).

I'm talking about knowing the team you're putting together is fundamentally doomed, and being ok with it anyway. Winning isn't impossible with a Master of None team, but it requires a significant amount of luck and it's completely unnecessary, so there's no reason to worry about doing it.

What you need to do to build this team is 'force' certain synergies, which is a terrible strategy in Underlords now that Scrappys have finally gone away. And you'll also want to actively take items that you'd otherwise never dream of acquiring, and you'll probably have to sit around for a bit with a druid who isn't pulling his weight, and because you'll be spending all your money on levels you'll almost definitely reach level 10 with some 1 star units on the board.

You'll have created a real loser. And that's the plan.

Ocean's Eleven

Let's get into the team itself, because you're not here for my motivational speeches.

Before I went after this achievement, I jumped into the training board to build something out without the pressure of the live environment. Here's what I arrived on there.

As you can see, it has 12 synergies.

  • Demon
  • Deadeye
  • Human
  • Blood-Bound
  • Heartless
  • Druid
  • Ranger
  • Savage
  • Summoner
  • Champion
  • Brute
  • Vigilant

The heroes used are:

  • Lone Druid
  • Bloodseeker
  • Terrorblade
  • Windranger
  • Drow Ranger
  • Treant Protector
  • Lifestealer
  • Ogre Magi
  • Legion Commander
  • Lycan

This provided me with a lot of options, but it had a downside. It requires 10 levels to work. Here's the board I used to get the achievement.

As you can see, a few wasted synergies, but largely the same deal. I dropped Demon because I never saw a Terrorblade, and I made up for his absence in a different way - through items. If I'd known I was going to get a Medusa as my first 5 gold hero, maybe I wouldn't have bothered.

There was something else about this board too. I achieved my 12 synergies with just 9 units. I didn't need the 10th. I went to 10 anyway because why not, but it wasn't necessary.

My Favourite Things

Items are your best friend when going for this achievment! A couple of good items will reduce your need to find certain units, allowing you to focus more on levelling up than rerolling. The items - Volvo's favourite items in all the world, HATS - were added with the 1.0 release.

When you get to the item rounds, you will want to reroll your items to get a hat. I know this is usually a terrible idea, but only if you're trying to win. Let's go through them to work out which ones are the best.

Ogre Cap

Equipped hero is Blood-Bound - not that useful here, because Blood-Bounds are so bloody cheap and they always show up early. An argument could be made that it's not that useful almost anywhere.

Crown Of Antlers

Equipped hero is a Hunter - this was the piece that allowed me to get to 12 Alliances with just 9 players. Tier 3, it's a killer piece of the puzzle.

Leg Breaker's Fedora

Equipped hero is a Brute - Might not be that useful, unless having two levels of one alliance counts as an extra alliance? I have no idea. I would recommend grabbing it if it's the only hat available.

Mantle Of The Flayed Twins

Equipped hero is a Deadeye - This allows you to ditch Bloodseeker in favour of someone else, although to keep Blood-bound you'll need either the Ogre Cap or a Warlock so it doesn't really change much. I just don't like Bloodseeker.

Ristul Circlet

Equipped hero is a Demon - If I'd gotten this hat I could have had 13 synergies. Imagine that. 13 synergies. My Legion Commander with 39% more health and 104% more health but she'd still get pants'd all the time anyway because you've got a terrible team. Highly recommend this unless it's between this and the crown of antlers.

Final Thoughts

Look you're gonna lose if you do this. But who cares? You'll have a glorious rainbow-coloured title. What's one loss in the face of eternal glory?

Why do we fall Master Wayne? So that we can learn to pick ourselves back up again.
