Measurements

Farm Quick-reference image 1

The farmable space is 4,293 spaces.

Horizontally (left to right) space is 78, 86, 51 across.

Vertical (top to bottom) space is 41, 59, 30 across.

If you noticed the math not lining up, that's because there's 1 extra space in one of the corners that wasn't counted for in the across measurements. In the map above I've put a green box around where the spare spot is.

Object Measurements

Scarecrows and Sprinklers will list spaces they cover and exclude the space they take at the center. Buildings and other features will only list space taken.

Scarecrows:

Makeshift Scarecrow: 5x5 (24 spaces)

Ordinary Scarecrow: 11x11 (120 spaces) Unlocked at Farming level 4

Ultimate Scarecrow: 19x19 (360 spaces) Unlocked via a Lab upgrade.

Sprinklers:

Sprinkler I: 3x3 (8 spaces) Unlocked at Farming level 2

Sprinkler II: 5x5 (24 spaces) Unlocked at Farming level 6

Sprinkler III: 9x9 (80 spaces) Unlocked at Farming level 9

(Auto Fertilizer, Seed, Harvest or SFH uses spacing of the attached sprinkler)

Buildings:

Coop: 7x4 (28 spaces)

Barn: 8x5 (40 spaces)

Stable: 4x3 (12 spaces)

Silo: 3x3 (9 spaces)

Mill: 4x3 (12 spaces)

Well: 3x3 (9 spaces)

Fish Pond: 5x5 (25 spaces)

Insect House: 5x5 (25 spaces)

Shed: 9x9 (81 spaces)

Note: The Shed gives a 17x17 (289 spaces) interior and gains you 208 extra spaces to work with.

Automation Chest: 2x2 (4 spaces)

This is a weird one, Automation Chests placed directly next to each other creates a conveyor between them. They also display a couple 2x2 spaces on the sides of them bringing this up to a sort of 6x2 space which are the unload/load zones for other objects. This function may cause some spacing discrepancies when combined with other features.

Quick Layouts

This section is just a quick reference for some quick layouts. These layouts only utilize sprinkler-watered space in order to skip watering for any day. There are definitely ways to utilize the space more "efficiently" as all path in the latter spaces are "wasted".

Note: Using auto-harvesters and SFH all take a toll on your PC. At the beginning of days where a bulk quantity of these go off all at once, there's a huge lag spike. If you are running a lower-spec computer, it may not be advisable to utilize these tools at this time.

24 Sprinkler I

9 Makeshift Scarecrow

184 planting spots

This layout gives you a condensed format for the low level items. Featuring Makeshift Scarecrows and Sprinkler I, this 15x15 plot gives you 184 spots to plant. Supposing you don't get an early upgrade to better scarecrows and sprinklers, this will hold you out for Spring and Summer. By your first Fall or Winter, you should be moving out of these items very likely.

4 Sprinkler II

1 Ordinary Scarecrow

96 planting spots

This layout is slightly smaller, but features the mid-tier items. Try not getting attached as you'll have to change it later for the final upgrade. Using the Ordinary Scarecrows 11x11 space, the 5x5 Sprinkler II fit in each corner tidy. This pattern has the benefit of aesthetic and being repeatable next to itself. I find each 24 space a sprinkler takes up is a nice way to also divide crop types. At this point, you'll want to start upgrading with auto-SFH (seed/fertilize/harvest) which attach right to your sprinklers. This means all crops are fully automated at the start of each season.

4 Sprinkler III

1 Ultimate Scarecrow

Finally you'll hit Ultimate Scarecrows and Sprinkler IIIs. The spacing on these will be identical to the previous layout, but bigger. Featuring a single line in a + shape centered on your scarecrow, this space gives you 320 planting plots. Your auto-SFH from the previous build don't need rebuilt, just moved onto your new sprinklers. This is as good as it might get as of this update.

Due to how Automatic Chests work, they seem not to be great for part of the crop flow. I encourage people to come up with ways that make it work optimally, but these seem best for in sheds with other devices.

The Shed

Farm Quick-reference image 49

The shed is a pocket dimension where it's inside dimensions are larger than it's outside dimensions. At 17x17 spaces, you have 289 spaces to play with. At some point, you may wish to utilize it efficiently at some level. For this example, all beehives are replaceable with other items like mason jars. The most lucrative item as of this patch (v1-184) is cactus, which is a flower, that will become cactus honey and then cactus mead, selling at oxium quality for almost 10k each, this value is bumped up over 10k with various perks.

Some quick notes/disclaimers:

As of this update (v1-184), there are still hiccups with devices.

Do not remove devices when items are being transported on the auto-chest belt or they may vanish.

Do not move/remove the shed with anything inside it, as it may vanish. (Sometimes a restart will replace furnishings, but not contents of containers, not always.)

The game has a hard time figuring out how auto-chests should populate devices and may skip devices, sometimes taking items out of the auto-chests, closing the menu and then placing them in again fixes this and sometimes you have to pickup and replace malfunctioning machines, including the auto-chests.

Auto-chests need their contents removed and then to be removed in order of placement, for this reason, always start at the wall and move away from it.

Here's a tip, but this may not work in all cases due to finicky programming. Auto-chests can reach items not fully on their squares. By utilizing this, I can have a row of aging barrels close and that extra reach allows them to reach the beehives here. This should be an optimal placement of the devices in most circumstances. Sometimes it doesn't work unless beehives are fully in the squares though because the behavior is weird and inconsistent. (I think I noticed it only had reach on the first and last chests in a row while testing things and only on the right side for some reason.)

Assuming this works for you your pattern will be:

8 beehives, 16 aging barrels, 8 auto-chests, 16 aging barrels, 8 beehives, row of space, 8 beehives, 16 aging barrels, 8 auto-chests, 16 aging barrels, 8 beehives

(You can make the extra row in the front, the back, essentially a T for this format, allowing you to decorate the wall as desired, if doing this, build from the front toward the back wall.)

If it doesn't work correctly for you, your pattern should look like:

8 beehives, 8 auto-chests, 16 aging barrels, 8 beehives, 8 auto-chests, 16 aging barrels, 8 beehives, 8 auto-chests, 8 aging barrels

This second pattern is less aesthetically pleasing to me, but seems to be the more optimal version of this patterning. You can place 2-single-space items in the bottom corners of either pattern. A normal chest or 2 aging barrels for manual usage may be a good choice if you want to maximize your space usage.
