Step 1: Controls
I'll be talking about controllers since I myself use a DualShock 4, but you can easily apply everything below to any type of controls you are using
Firstly, you need to get used to your controller. This takes nothing but time, so go on and spend some just fooling around, understanding the way your movements affect the car. You can try tweaking some settings (like sensitivity), but that's kind of a risky path to follow, as, for instance, high sensitivity can play tricks on you if you, say, try to take a high-speed corner.
Step 2: The Car
I suggest using one car to improve your driving and then practicing on other cars so you can distinguish the differences in their behavior and therefore learn how different cars drive.
In order to do that, you'll need a car. So pick one! No, seriously, pick one. I won't tell you what to choose as it must be utterly your choice.
Now that you have a car, it's time to mod it a little. And I'm not talking about adding a big-ass turbo and a widebody, no. We'll get to it later, and for now here's the things you need to do:
remove the ABS
turn off stability control
make sure you use proper tires
lighten the car a bit
equip a manual transmission (optional)
ABS can be removed on any car by opening Vehicle Config -> Body -> Anti-Lock Braking System.
Why remove it? To get to know exactly how much you can push the brakes until the wheels lock and you go skidding right into that guardrail. After you learn how to brake on the edge of that locking, you can re-equip it - just to make sure you won't lock out during a panic break (that happens to everyone, even Keiichi Tsuchiya has to panic brake once in a while).
Stability control can be turned off by pressing the appropriate button on the Simple Powertrain Control widget (to the left of your tacho/speedometer). Just press it several times until you see a "Drivemode: ESC & TC off" notification.
Equip proper tires from Vehicle Config -> Body -> Front/Rear suspension -> Wheels -> Tires. Use Sport or Race tires to get a grip.
Lighten the car by removing rear seats and maybe replacing hood with a carbon fiber one (the hood won't change a lot unless you drive a track beast, which you shouldn't be driving at that point)
Manual transmission is preferable just because it gives you more control over the engine than automatic or robotic does.
Step 3: The Road
Best roads for practicing are mountain roads.
In my opinion, it's better to get to know one particular course and then switch to other ones - just like you did with the car. And that course better be a curvy, narrow mountain road!
Maps like Utah or Italy have a lot of touge-like roads. You can also drive on track maps, such as Automation Test Track, ETK Driver Experience Center or Hirochi Raceway. If your PC is a bit slow and you can't afford playing on a texture-rich map like Italy, go with the Small Island. It runs smooth even on laptops and has a nice ring road with a lot of corners and altitude changes. And I'm pretty sure there is a ton of maps in the Workshop; my favorite, however, is the Mount Akina touge[www.beamng.com] .
Basically all you have to do is turn on some Eurobeat or perhaps Marty Friedman's "Fuel Injected Stingray" and drive! Take the corner, join the crash, respawn and try again - this is the way.
Step 4: Techniques
You are now used to your car and know the road; this is where the fun begins!
From now on every time you drive on the road you chose, you'll drive faster and faster - util one day you'll do a perfect run with no mistakes whatsoever. But in order to achieve this, you'll have to develop a certain technique - your own technique. See, driving is just like chess, as there can't be two drivers who'll take the exact same route.
Some tips:
accelerating - don't floor it every time you need to gain speed. Try to keep the revs up so you don't have to wait for the engine to get up
braking - don't brake more than you need to. Braking in short bursts is also a good habit, as it doesn't heat the brakes too much.
cornering - either brake and corner or accelerate and corner. Idling while cornering means you either are going too slow or are going to lose control while exiting. Also keep in mind that lines are the key to cornering - examine each corner and try to find the apex on the go
drift - drift is not always the fastest way to corner. Slip angle is
Step 5: My Config
I just couldn't resist...
If you're lazy or don't have any idea what car to use, I'll leave my Ibishu 200BX spec here:
Engine:
Adjustable race ECU
Stage 2 Performance long block
Stock engine mounts
Race oil pan
Race 6-speed manual transmission with ultra light flywheel
Suspension:
Race coilovers & sway bars
Race LSD Wheels are 17x8 Wangan-2P with 225/40R17 race tires. Brakes are race-spec, too.
I also removed the rear seats, replaced front ones with race bucket seats, replaced the hood with a carbon fiber one and threw in strut bar & a roll cage.
Step 6: Have Fun!
If you find yourself bored or irritated - don't force yourself
This game, as well as driving itself, is meant to have fun. If you don't like it, that's not a shame - maybe you're just not in the mood.
