How To Improve Aim

General Introduction

Aiming with a mouse primarily relies on your hand-eye coordination. This is why you can adjust your sensitivity and quickly adapt to it, achieving similar performance, provided the change in sensitivity is reasonable. However, this doesn't mean you can spend all day on tile frenzy and expect to excel at tracking. Different skills require different types of practice to achieve optimal performance.

Knowing what to practice is crucial to avoid wasting time on the wrong exercises and getting little value from your training. In games like Apex Legends, Battlefield, and Warzone, where the Time to Kill (TTK) is higher, tracking the enemy is crucial. On the other hand, in games like CSGO and Valorant, flick shots are more important because a single headshot can eliminate an enemy.

Mental State

When practicing aim, it's important to remain relaxed. If you're feeling stressed, worried, or upset about something, your performance will likely suffer because your mind is elsewhere. If you notice you're stressed, it's not the ideal time to train your aim, as it will only lead to frustration and potentially anger. Aim practice is most effective when you're focused and in the right mindset.

Gear

While having a $300 mouse and a $1500 monitor can provide some benefits, aim improvement is more about the individual than the equipment. That said, I strongly recommend upgrading to a monitor with at least 144Hz. If you're currently stuck at 60Hz and unable to upgrade, I suggest not relying on your high scores as an accurate measure of your current skill level, but rather using them to track your progress. Once you switch to a 144Hz monitor, you'll notice significant improvements within the first week, rendering your previous 60Hz scores inaccurate representations of your true skill level.

Sensitivity

CM/360When talking about sensitivity, many players mention their "cm/360," which refers to the distance their mouse travels in real life to complete a full 360-degree rotation in the game. To find your cm/360, you can use an online calculator. For instance, in CS2, with 800 DPI and 1.6 sensitivity, your cm/360 is about 32.47 cm. This means you need to move your mouse about 32.47 cm to turn 360 degrees, and half of this distance (16.24 cm) for a 180-degree turn.

eDPIeDPI (effective DPI) is calculated by multiplying your DPI by your in-game sensitivity. It's a handy way to compare sensitivity settings within the same game. Note that eDPI values are specific to each game and aren't directly comparable between games like Valorant and CSGO. If you want to match another player's sensitivity, ask for their eDPI and adjust your in-game sensitivity using a calculator, rather than changing both DPI and sensitivity.

When should I change sensitivity?Deciding when to adjust your sensitivity can vary widely from person to person. Generally, with a standard-sized mousepad, you should be able to comfortably turn 180 degrees and still have some mousepad space left. However, the right sensitivity also needs to feel comfortable for you. Finding your ideal sensitivity is a personal journey that involves testing different settings to find what works best. If you're unsure, experiment with the sensitivities used by your favorite pro players to find a good match.

Terms:DPI: The sensors sample resolution.

Polling Rate: How often the mouse's position is updated (i.e., how many times per second the sensor's image is refreshed).

General Improvement

When aiming to improve your aim, there are generally two main categories:

Flicking: Any scenario that requires you to flick to a target.

Tracking: Any scenario that requires you to follow a target.

Additionally, there are subcategories such as reactive, predictable, and click timing.

When practicing aim, try to include at least one scenario from each category to ensure a well-rounded training session.

Flicking and ReactionTo practice flicking and reaction, I recommend using a "1w1t" scenario, which involves a single target on the screen that dies in one shot. Standard 1w1t scenarios continuously challenge you to react faster for higher scores. However, they don't provide immediate feedback on how quickly you reacted after each flick. Therefore, I suggest looking for reactive flicking scenarios with targets that appear and disappear, challenging your skill level. This can be easily translated to a game like Counter-Strike, where you need to quickly click an enemy's head before they click yours, with the disappearing target acting as a "you died" indicator.

Click TimingClick timing is a subcategory of flicking where you click on targets that die after one click. This means your mouse never has to stop; you simply click as your crosshair passes the target. Within click timing, there are two types of scenarios: static clicking and dynamic clicking. Predictable static click timing often includes scenarios like tile frenzy, grid shot, or spider shot, which are mostly good for refining control and reducing shakiness. Static clicking helps improve technique and accuracy, while target switching focuses on practicing speed and proper pacing.

TrackingTracking is extremely useful and offers numerous benefits. If you flick and don’t land exactly on the target, you need to adjust onto it. Tracking scenarios practice the precise control required for these adjustments. In games like Apex Legends, where the time to kill is much higher, tracking is essential for holding your crosshair on a moving target over an extended period.

Tracking is the ability to follow a moving target, which helps you make precise adjustments when you get close to a target. In games like Counter-Strike, you only need to intercept a player’s head and click when your crosshair is on them. However, to click their head, you need to ensure you're precisely on the target. Being able to hold the target briefly can also improve your dynamic clicking scenarios.

Micro AdjustmentsWhen flicking onto a target, you typically make a macro adjustment, which involves a large motion to get you close to the target. If you miss by a small margin, you need to make a micro adjustment, a small additional movement to correct your initial macro movement. Practicing this in isolated scenarios is an excellent way to improve your aim.

SmoothnessSmoothness is another important aspect to practice. When tracking a target, your aim can sometimes be shaky or stuttery, reducing your accuracy. This is where smoothness comes in. I recommend incorporating smoothness exercises into your routine to enhance your accuracy.

How To Track Progress

The most common method of tracking your progress is through Voltaic. Voltaic offers a community-made collection of scenarios covering a wide range of skills. Every three months, it's beneficial to visit the Voltaic benchmark and attempt each scenario at least five times to gauge improvement in your scores. However, I wouldn't suggest relying on the Voltaic benchmark alone as a tool for improvement, but rather as a means to assess your current skill level.

Aim Labs is particularly useful because it includes a built-in Voltaic benchmark. You can find it by clicking Play > Events > Voltaic benchmark.
